Relapsing polychondritis is a rare inflammatory disorder affecting the cartilaginous structures throughout the body. Although there is no pathognomonic laboratory tests, clinical features, when coupled with histopathologic findings, enable one to make a diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis. A 26-year-old man presented with purplish, swollen, and tender auricles and injected eyes. His symptoms had developed eight months ago and fluctuated irrespective of various medications such as corticosteroids and antibiotics. Histopathologic examination revealed loss of basophilic staining of the cartilage with some dissolution of its structures. Treatment was initiated with dapsone, However, the remission was too immediate to be considered as a effect of dapsone.

From January 2007 to June 2012, 55 autopsy cases were reviewed, in which death occurred outside the hospital and the patients were declared dead on arrival at the emergency departments, in order to compare the clinical and postmortem examination diagnoses of death-on-arrival patients in tertiary hospitals in Busan, Yangsan and Ulsan city. Of 22 non-traumatic deaths, 21 occurred from natural causes and 1 from unknown cause (sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS). Clinical diagnoses were cardiovascular diseases or "non-traumatic" / "unknown" while autopsy diagnoses were majorly cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary artery diseases (72.7%). Of 33 unnatural deaths, the cause of death was blunt trauma in 4 patients, sharp-force injury in 6, falling in 10, gunshot injury in 1, traffic accidents in 3, asphyxia in 2, drowning in 2, fire-related death in 1, and intoxication in 4. There were no definite discrepancies between clinical and autopsy diagnoses, except for 5 non-traumatic deaths and 2 unnatural deaths. These results suggest that the role of the emergency department may be crucial in postmortem investigations.

A rare case of traumatic bilateral anterior and posterior dislocstions of the hip wss occured by autamobile accident as a passenger injury. The right hip was dislocated anteroinferior to the righ scetabulum(neer the right obturator froamen), and the left hip was dislocated posterosuperior to the left acetsbulum with a ipsilateral femur head fracture caudsd to the fovea centralis(Fig. 1).

Pain in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is known as a common symptom, experienced by about 72% of patients. Various types of pain are associated with GBS, including paresthesia, dysesthesia, radicular pain, meningism, myalgia and visceral pain. Pain in GBS can vary from mild to severe, often under-recognized and poorly managed. This article reviews the various pains associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome and their management.

The use of angiographic embolization gas been well described for the control of gynecologic bleeding. Recently, we have experienced the successful embolization in two case of serons bleeding related to giynecologic malignancy. Clinical evaluation revealed a gynecologic cancer with active bleeding. Becaause we judged that conservative management was unable to cuntrol the bleeding, we underwent an angiographic embolization. The result presented here indicates that angiographic embolization is a relatively safe, effective and rapid procedure that should be considered early in management of gynecohogic cancer bleeding that is unresponsive to conservative management.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the main problem in women, but senile osteoporosis is believed to occur after 65 years and affects men and women equally. Measurement of biochemical markers in conjunction with bone mineral density (BMD) determination can detect individual patients at the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis. METHODS: We measured serum osteocalcin levels as a bone formation marker, and urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) levels as a bone resorption marker, in 2190 men (from 22 to 83 year-old), and 1209 women (from 25 to 80 year-old). The age and sex related variations of serum osteocalcin and urinary DPD levels were analysed. The serum osteocalcin and urinary DPD levels were compared with BMD. These biochemical bone turnover markers were compared with each other. RESULTS: In women, serum osteocalcin and urinary DPD levels were increased with age from forties to sixties, after then showed decrease from seventies. In men, serum osteocalcin levels were slightly decreased with age, but DPD levels were slightly increased with age in men. These biochemical bone markers and BMD showed negative correlations. Osteocalcin and DPD levels showed positive correlations, especially in women. Osteocalcin levels were higher in men than women, age before fifth decades but lower in men than women after fifties. DPD levels was higher in women than men through all the age. CONCLUSION: Osteocalcin and DPD levels showed age and sex related variations in healthy Koreans. In management of patients with a risk of osteoporosis, consideration of variations according to the age and sex should be given.

Tibia fractures are frequently occurred with increased traffic accident and industrial accident recently. And there are controversies in treatment of tibia fractures. From Jan. 1986 to Oct. 1988, tibial fractures of 107 cases in 105 patient, treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Dae Han Hospital, were analyzed. Results were obtained as follows. l. Of 105 patients, 85 patients were male & 20 patients were female. 2. The most common causes of fracture was traffic accident. 3. The most common level of fracture was middle one-third of tibial shaft. 4. Of 107 cases, conservative treatment was 35 cases and operative treatment in 72 cases. 5. Average union time was 16 weeks in conservative treatment & 18.5 weeks in operative treatment.

The principal aims of this study were to identify the composition of salivary pellicles formed on various orthodontic brackets and to obtain a detailed information about the protein adsorption profiles from whole whole saliva and two major glandular salivas. Four different types of orthodontic brackets were used. All were upper bicuspid brackets with a 022 x 028 slot Roth prescription; stainless steel metal, monocrystalline sapphire, polycrystalline alumina, and plastic brackets. Bracket pellicles were formed by the incubation of orthodontic brackets with whole saliva, submandibular-sublingual saliva, and parotid saliva for 2 hours. The bracket pellicles were extracted and confirmed by employing sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Western transfer methods, and immunodetection. The results showed that low-molecular weight salivary mucin, alpha-amylase, secretory IgA (sIgA), acidic proline-rich proteins, and cystatins were attached to all of these brackets regardless of the bracket types. High-molecular weight mucin, which promotes the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans, did not adhere to any orthodontic brackets. Though the same components were detected in all bracket pellicles, however, the gel profiles showed qualitatively and quantitatively different pellicles, according to the origins of saliva and the bracket types. In particular, the binding of sIgA was more prominent in the pellicles from parotid saliva and the binding of cystatins was prominent in the pellicles from the form plastic brackets. This study indicates that numerous salivary proteins adhere to the orthodontic brackets and these salivary proteins adhere selectively according to bracket types and the types of the saliva.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: To compare on bone formation between ovariectomized rats and normal rats after graft of alloplastic bone material. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty female rats were used in this study. They were divided into two groups by each ten rats. One group was ovariectomized and grafted alloplastic bone material. Other group was non-ovariectomized and grafted alloplastic bone material. After a healing time of 4 weeks, the animals were sacrificed and decalcified preparations were routinely processed for histologic evaluations. RESULTS: Ovariectomy group was significantly lesser bone formation compared with non-ovariectomy group. CONCLUSIONS: Ovariectomy acts as a negative factor in new bone formation.
