3.A Clinical Observation on the Injuries of the Genitourinary Tract.
Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(3):334-338
A clinical observation was made on the injuring of genitourinary tract of in-patients in the Department of Urology, Soon-Chun-Hyang College Hospital during the period from January. 1977 to December, 1980 for 4 years. There results were as follows; 1. Of 505 cases hospitalized, 86 cases have shown injuries of genitourinary tract, giving a ratio of 17%. 2. The age ranged from 4 to 67 years, and of these cases the favorable ages were those from 11 to 40 years for 73.3%. 3. Traffic accident was the most frequent cause of the injuries it 54.7%. 4. The kidney was involved most frequently (41.9%) and the involvement of the urethra was 27.9%. 5. Nephrectomy was performed in 6 cases (16.7%) of 36 renal injuries. 6. The ureteral injuries were occurred by traffic accident in 1 case and during uterine surgery in 1 case. 7. Six cases of 15 bladder injuries and 14 cases of 24 urethral injuries were accompanied with pelvic bone fracture.

4.Clinical Observation on the Renal Tuberculosis.
Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(6):759-764
A clinical observation was made on 54 cases of renal tuberculosis who were admitted to the Department of Urology, Soon-Chun-Hyaing College Hospital during the period from January, 1977 to December, 1981. The following results were obtained. 1. The incidence of renal tuberculosis was 7.5% of all urological in-patients. 2. The most common age group was 20-49 years (68.5%) and male to female ratio was 1.8:1. 3. Both kidneys were affected in 8 cases (14.8%), while 26 cases (48.2%) in right and 20 cases (37%) were in left kidney. 4. The most frequent subjective complaints was frequency in 62.9% and hematuria in 40.7%, flank pain in 38.9%, painful urination in 29.6%, nocturia in 27.8% in order of their frequency. 5. Eleven (20.4%) of 54 cases were associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. 6. Urinary findings revealed pyuria in 68.5%, proteinuria in 66.7% and hematuria in 53.7%. 7. On the intravenous pyelogram, non-visualization of the kidney was found in 31.5%, hydronephrosis in 24.1%and destruction of calices in 20.4%. 8.Cystoscopic findings showed active lesions of cystitis in 47.9%, fibrosis with trabeculation in 20.8%, deformed ureteral orifice in 18.8% and contracted bladder in 14.6%. 9. Nephrectomy was done in 26 cases (48.1%), ureteric reimplantation in 2 cases. cutaneous ureterostomy in 1case and nephrostomy in 1 case.

The authors compared the basic characteristics of rural woman in relation to family planning for June 1967 and June 1969 in Kyung San Country Kyungpook Province, Korea. The statistics showed that these characteristics are gradually changing. The marriage age was slightly higher than the past year and the formal education of women increased. The ideal children number, and tile gravidity and mortality rates decreased. At the same time the number of induced abortions, the knowledge of family planning, and the acceptance rate of contraception increased. These phenomena seem to follow the present worldwide trend.

We analysed a series of 35 patients with primary cerebellar hemorrhage, diagnosed by computerized tomography scanning from 1985 to 1988. They constituted 6.6% of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage(35 out of 530) who were admitted during the same period. There were 13 men and 22 women. The site of hemorrhage was vermis in 15 patients and hemisphere in 20 patients. On admission, the Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS) value was less than 10 in 15 patients(42.3%) and not less than 10 in 20 patients(57.1%). Quadrigeminal cistern was normal in 11 patients(31.4%), partially obliterated in 15 patients(42.9%) and completely obliterated in 9 patients(25.7%). The largest diameter of the hematoma was less than 3cm in 15 patients(42.9%) and larger than 3cm in 20 patients(57.2%). Hydrocephalic change was observed in 21 patients(60%). The hematoma was removed via suboccipital craniectomy in 16 patients(45.7%) and managed conservatively in 11 patients(31.4%). In 8 patients(22.9%), external ventricular drainage was performed. The method of treatment was different according to the GCS value on admission, the status of the quadrigeminal cistern, the presence of hydrocephalic change, and the size of hematoma. Overall mortality rate was 22.9%. These results suggested that the conservative treatment can be done in patients with (1) high GCS value(not less than 10), (2) patent quadrigeminal cistern, (3) absent hydrocephalic change, and (4) small sized hematoma(less than 3cm). If not surgical treatment should be considered.

Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(5):715-717
The patent urachus results from failure of luminal closure of the urachus. Embryologically, the urachus represents the vestigial remnant of the allantois which, in the fetus, communicates with the cloaca. The authors report a case of congenital patent urachus with review of some literatures.

PURPOSE: A field investigation was done to evaluate the level of the epidemic of Shigellosis in Jeju Island during the first half of year 2000. METHODS: Confirming the Shigellosis was done by the structured questionnaire and the result of rectal swab for the residents having a diarrhea. RESULTS: As the confirmed patients with Shigella sonnei were 933 from 25 April to 14 August 2000, the crude incidence rate was 174 per 100,000 persons. The highest incidence rate was shown in 5-9 year-old group. Especially the south area of Jeju Island, called as Namjejugun, had the major epidemic occurrence. CONCLUSIONS: The huge and chronic epidemic of Shigellosis was confirmed. The nature of this epidemic suggested that the endemic occurrence had been existed in Jeju Island.
