One hundred seven isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from bovine mastitis were investigated for colony morphology in serum-soft agar (SSA), autoagglutination in salt, and capsular serotype. Capsular polysaccharide (CP) was purified and quantified from the extracts of clinical isolates. Overall, 89 isolates (83.2%) were diffuse in the SSA, without any difference in the proportion of diffuse colony between type 5 and type 8 strains. Some strains exhibited compact colonies in the SSA and expressed CP as determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indicating that compact morphology does not exclude encapsulation. The majority of the strains (11/12) showed autoagglutination in the salt aggregation test. The serotype 336 accounted for 46.7% of the isolates followed by serotype 5 (12.1%) and serotype 8 (12.1%). Particularly, twenty-six (24.3%) isolates reacted with two serotypes; 7 for type 8/336 and 19 for type 5/336. Five isolates (4.7%) were nontypeable with monoclonal antibodies specific for CP serotype 5, 8, or 336. The CP concentration in culture supernatants varied with the serotypes, and the total amount of CP produced by cells grown in a liquid medium was much less than that produced by cells grown on a solid medium. 3.A Case of Peutz - Jeghers syndrome Accompanied with Intussusception.

The Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a familial disesse charaeterized by mucocutaneaus pigmentation, gastrointestinal polyposis, and transmission of autosomal dominant trait. This syndrome is clinically important becuase of the coreplieation caused by the polyp, leading to abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and intussusception. Authors experienced a case of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome admitted to Walace Memorial Baptist Hospital who was complained of recurrent abdominal pain, melanin pigmentation of lips, oral mucosa, and digits. UGI series, small bowel series, colon cnema, gastrofiberscopy, and colonoseopy revealed multiyle intestinal polyps. Pathologic findings on endoseopic polypectomy showed hamartomatous polyp.

4.Changes of symphysis morphology after chincup treatment.

Although it is well known that the chincup, used to correct a skeletal class III malocclusion in growing children, reduce the mandibular prognathism by arresting the growth of the mandibular length and rotating the mandible posteroinferiorly, the majority of the studies about chincup is focused on condylar head that plays an important role in mandibular growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphologic change of the mandibular symphysis where extraoral force is applied directly during chincup treatment. The data for this study were obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs of 62 growing children(chincup group:32, control group:30) with mixed dentition who had been accepted for the orthodontic treatment at Chonbuk National University Dental Hospital. The results were as follows : 1. Symphysis height was increased both in chincup therapy group and control group during treatment. Symphysis depth was decreased or maintained the initial values in chin cup therapy group, whereas increased in control group. Posterior symphysis depth was decreased both in chin cup therapy group and control group, but anterior symphysis depth was increased in control group, whereas decreased in chincup therapy group. 2. Chin depth and chin curvature were increased in control group, whereas maintained or decreased in chincup therapy group during treatment. Chin angle, menton angle and symphysis angle were decreased in control group, whereas increased in chincup therapy group. It suggested that bone deposition in pogonion area that occur normally with mandibular growth was suppressed by direct contact of chincup. 3. When growing children wear chincup, symphysis morphology was maintained due to inhibition of forward growth at mandibular symphysis. It may be due to the suppression of bone deposition in anterior part of symphysis.

5.Arthroscopic Treatment of the Discoid Meniscus

Thirty-seven discoid lateral menisci of thirty-six patients were treated by arthroscopic means between January, 1987 and June, 1989. A discoid lateral meniscus was present in 15.3% of all patients who have underwent arthroscopy of the knee in this period. It was present in 25.7% of all meniscal lesions and in 39.4% of all lateral meniscal lesions. The average age was 22.7 years and the average length of follow up was thirteen months. Clinically, click sound was the most frequent symptom comprising 86% except knee pain, which was present in all. On physical examination, joint tenderness was present most frequently in 75%. On arthroscopic findings, twenty-eight discoid menisci had the tear and one had severe degenerative change. A tear was most frequently found in posterior horn and the most frequent pattern of tear was longitudinal including bucket-handle and peripheral type. Partial meniscectomy was performed on twenty-nine knees and subtotal meniscectomy on eight knees. At follow up, twenty-nine knees (78.4%) were rated excellent or good and eight knees (21.6%) were rated as fair. There were no poor results. We suggest that arthroscopic partial resection with preservation of normal meniscal shape as much as possible is more excellent than total meniscectomy for the symptomatic discoid meniscus.

6.Knee joint reconstruction using regional flaps: an aesthetic approach to extensive defects following fourth-degree contact burns

Flap surgery may be required in cases of severe contact burns. The authors report a patient with an exposed knee joint. A 47-year-old man experienced a wide and deep contact burn on his right knee from a stove while under the influence of alcohol. The patient underwent escharectomy, medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscle flap surgery, pedicled anterolateral thigh flap surgery with a meshed scalp split-thickness skin graft, and secondary antegrade peroneal fasciocutaneous flap surgery with a thigh split-thickness skin graft. The patient was able to walk with a hinged brace at 2 months after surgery.

9.The Prevalence of Simple Renal Cysts Studied by Ultrasonography, and the Relations to Age and Hypertension.

Simple renal cyst is the most common space- occupying lesion of kidney in adults. However, there were a few systematic Korean reports for the prevalence of simple renal cysts. Our purpose was to estimate the prevalence of simple renal cysts using ultrasonography, and to determine the relations to age and hypertension. The subjects were 504 volunteers (aged over 29 years) of the persons who were enrolled a health check-up program of Naju Hospital, Naju, Korea. Number of male in 504 persons was 334 (66.3%) and female 170 (33.7%). Mean age was 55 years (range; 30-86). The results were as follows: 1) One or more renal cysts were found in 50 individuals of 504 persons aged over 29 years (9.9%). In 331 persons aged over 49 years, the prevalence of simple renal cysts was 12.1%. The prevalence was significantly increased with age (P<0.001), but the difference between male (9.6%) and female (10.6%) was insignificant. 2) Mean value of cyst diameter was 23mm (5-69 mm) and was not correlated with age. However, the cyst diameter was significantly higher in female than in male, 32.4mm vs 18.0mm (P<0.001). Total number of cysts per person tended to increase with age (P<0.001). 3) The correlation between prevalence of simple renal cysts and blood pressure was statistically insignificant. However, the prevalence of hypertension in persons with cysts was higher than in persons with no cyst (27.9% vs 15.3%, P<0.05). Cyst diameter was not correlated with blood pressure. 4)Urinalysis in persons with cysts, showed microscopic hematuria in 47.4% and proteinuria in 26.3 %, however, grade of microscopic hematuria and proteinuria were not correlated with cyst diameter. The concentrations of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, hemoglobin and hematocrit were not affected by presence or absence of simple renal cysts. By comparison with the recent foreign reports, the prevalence of simple renal cysts in Korean was similar to those in foreigners. Our study ascertained that simple renal cysts are age-dependent and total number of cysts per person also increases with age. In most of persons with simple renal cysts, the renal function is not affected and the related symptoms are trivial. However, we suggested that simple renal cysts may cause hypertension. To elucidate the correlation between simple renal cyst and hypertension, further studies are needed.

10.A study on the expression of glycosaminoglycans in the experimental tooth movement of rat and in cultured periodontal ligament cells.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate 1) in vivo, the expression of chondroitin 4-sulfate (CH-4S), a structural element of glycosaminoglycans(GAGs), in periodontal tissue during the experimental movement of rat incisors, by labelled streptavidine biotin immunohistochemical staining for CH-4S, 2) In vitro, the expression of CH-4S in cultured human periodontal ligament(PDL) cells supplemented with 10ng/ml of TGF-beta1, 20ng/ml of PDGF-BB, 1ng/ml TNF-alpha, or 1microgram/ml LPS by western blot analysis. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The expression of CH-4S was stronger in pulp, PDL, osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes in experimental group than in control group, but was rare in dentin, and cementum of experimental groups, regardless of the duration of force application, which was not different from that of control group. 2. In experimental group, the expression of CH-4S in pulp began to increase at 1 day after force application and got to the highest degree at 7 days. After 14 days, the expression in CH-4S immunoreactivity was decreased, and became similar to that of control group at 28 days. 3. The expression of CH-4S in PDL was noted in adjacent to alveolar bone. PDL showed higher intensity of immunolabelling after 1 day of orthodontic tooth movement. And the expression was more stronger in the tension side than that of pressure side of PDL at 1 day, but more stronger in the pressure side than that of tension side of PDL at 4 days. After 7 days, a decrease in CH-4S expression was observed. 4. The expression of CH-4S in alveolar bone got to the highest degree at 4 days, and At 7 days, a decrease in CH-4S expression was observed. 5. PDGF-BB notably raised the expression of CH-4S in the PDL cells at 3 days of cultivation 6. The expression of CH-4S of PDL cells was decreased with the application of TNF-alpha at 1 day. 7. Admixture of TGF-beta1 and PDGF-BB got more expression of CH-4S in PDL as compared to only TGF-beta1 or PDGF-BB. A similar decrease of the expression of CH-4S was observed in the case of application of LPS or TNF-alpha.
