Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1997;37(3):409-414
PURPOSE: To observe MR findings of vascular abnormality in Sturge-Weber syndrome and to determine the value of MRI in diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome (age : 3 months-32 years)were evaluated by MR imaging ; in six and four cases, respectively, the results were correlated with those of CT and angiography. We retrospectively analysed changes in the cortical vein and deep venous system, including the medullary and subependymal vein, as well as an largement of the choroid plexus, leptomeningeal enhancement, and changes in diploic space. RESULTS: In all cases except one, in which non-contrast enhanced study had been performed, varying degrees of leptomeningeal enhancement were seen. In nine cases the cortical vein became smaller; enlargement of the choroid plexus was seen in eight cases, change in the diploic space in seven (including three in which there was angiomatous involvement), and enlargement of the deep venous system in seven. In younger patients, collateral pathways were less developed and leptomeningeal angiomatous changes were more pronounced than in those who were older. CONCLUSION: MRI is a useful modality for the evaluationn of vascular changes in Sturge-Weber syndrome. These changes vary according to a patient's age and the duration of the disease.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2014;20(9):706-711
OBJECTIVETo identify the position of traditional herbal medicine in dementia research field using mapping technology.
METHODSKeywords for dementia and traditional herbal medicine for treating dementia were used to extract scientific articles from the Web of Science database from January 2000 to July 2010. A co-occurrence matrix was created based on the concurrent set of author's keywords occurring in each scientific article, and technology network maps were created from similarity index matrices.
RESULTSTwenty specialized research areas were identified in the dementia field, and the relationship strength was 0.2-0.6. Many research fields were associated with diagnosis and risk factors for dementia. Additionally, the mechanism or cause of dementia is an actively studied field. Traditional herbal medicine for treating dementia was located on a map near the cortical dementia diagnosis and therapy, and frontotemporal dementia research field with a relationship strength of 0.53 and 0.31-0.33 respectively, which demonstrates that traditional herbal medicine for dementia occupies an independent research area with a relationship to existing scientific research fields.
CONCLUSIONTraditional herbal medicine can provide an alternative and complementary approach for treating dementia as evidenced by a scientific mapping analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study investigated the efficacy and safety of docetaxel/cisplatin/5-fluorouracil (DCF) combination chemotherapy as a first-line treatment in patients with advanced gastric cancer. METHODS: The study enrolled 48 patients diagnosed with unresectable pathologically proven gastric cancer who received DCF combination chemotherapy between April 2006 and August 2009. The dose administered was docetaxel 75 mg/m2 for 1 h and cisplatin 75 mg/m2 for 90 min on day 2, and 5-FU 750 mg/m2 for 24 h on days 1-5, every 3 weeks. The response was assessed every three cycles. The toxicity was evaluated for every chemotherapy course according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) toxicity criteria ver. 2.0. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 58 years (range 31-78 years). The median overall survival was 11.5 months (2.3-28.2 months) and the median time to progression was 5.5 months (0.3-18.9 months). No complete remission occurred. Of the patients, 56% achieved a partial response, 21% stable disease, and 10% progressive disease. The overall response rate was 56%. During a total 292 cycles, anemia worse than NCI toxicity grade 3 occurred in 2%, leukopenia in 33.1%, neutropenia in 67.1%, and thrombocytopenia in 4.4%. Neutropenic fever occurred in 33 cycles (11.3%), dose reduction due to side effects in 165 cycles (56.5%), and a regimen change due to side effect in five cycles (1.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Combination chemotherapy with docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-FU is efficacious, but has relatively high toxicity. A DCF protocol that maximizes its efficiency, while minimizing toxicity, would be more useful as a first-line treatment in patients with advanced gastric cancer.

PURPOSE: To describe the characteristics of CT findings in nasal lymphoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT findings and pathologic findings of eight patients (six males and two females) aged between 24 and 68 years with pathologically-proven nasal lymphoma. We analyzed mass location, laterality, size, margin, mass effect, adjacent bony change and contrast enhancement pattern. RESULTS: All eight cases werenon-Hodgkin's lymphoma, intermediate grade, diffuse large cell type. Seven cases were B-cell type and one was T-cell. In all cases, tumors were located in the medial wall of the inferior turbinate. In four cases, they were also found in the anterior ethmoidal sinus, and in one case, in the nasal septum. The mean size of the main mass was 3.3 cm. In seven cases, tumors were unilateral (one on the right; six on the left), and in the remaining case, bilateral. In six cases tumor margin was smooth and in two cases focal nodularity was seen. In two cases there was no bony change, and in four, there was mucosal thickening along the nasal septum; in one of these four, minimal bony erosion was also found. In the other two cases, bony destruction was seen, and tumors were very large (7 cm in diameter) or bilterally located. In three cases, the nasal septum was displaced by the mass. In all cases with bony change, the nasal septum was involved. All tumors were homogeneously well enhanced after IV contrast administration. CONCLUSION: The main CT findings of nasal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were smooth margin, unilateral location (mainly in the medial wall of the inferior turbinate and growing to the medial side without bony destruction) mucosal thickening along the nasal septum and clear homogeneous enhancement after IV contrast administration. These characteristics will help diagnosis, help determine the appropriate region for radiation and other appropriate therapy, and facilitate prognosis in patients with nasal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Korean Journal of Medicine 2011;81(2):223-228
Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a rare digestive syndrome characterized by symptoms and signs of intestinal obstruction in the absence of mechanical obstruction. A 48-year-old female presented at our facility with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Simple abdominal radiography revealed small bowel gas and ileus. Computed tomography also revealed a dilated small bowel, but there was no evidence of mechanical obstruction. Esophageal function was decreased based on high-resolution manometry and the gastric emptying time was prolonged on a gastric emptying scan. The patient recovered with conservative treatment. We report a case of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction with esophageal and gastric dysfunction.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the worldwide procedure performed for patients with various stage hepatoceullar carcinoma (HCC), but is not yet considered as curative treatment because of relatively high local recurrence rate. Moreover, many clinicians frequently experience treatment failure (incomplete necrosis or stage progression etc.) after repeated TACE, but no clear guidelines have been recommended about salvage treatment modalities for this situation. Recently, studies for combination of radiation therapy and TACE for HCC with TACE refractoriness have been tried and reported better therapeutic efficacy. Based on above suggestions, we herein offer our experience of a patient with macrovascular invasion developed after repeated TACE that achieve complete remission by stereotactic body radiation therapy. Further study, maybe regarding a combination of locoregional and systemic therapy, is necessary on how to manage HCC patients with TACE refractoriness.

This cohort study is a collaborative effort of 8 institutions. The goal is to establish a large scale cohort that can be followed for 10 or more years to assess the relationship between life-styles and cancer occurrence, and to evaluate the role of environmental exposures in the development of six major sites of cancers(stomach, liver, lung, colorectum, uterine cervix and female breast) in the rural population. Since 1993, 11,304 men and women aged over 35 living in four areas have been recruited. The number of target population is 30,000 persons, which is expected to be successfully recruited until 1999. Each subject has completed a detailed questionnaire on general life-styles, reproductive factors, and agricultural chemical exposures through the interview. Anthropometric measurements with body fat composition and the routine clinical laboratories were examined. For the cancer-free cohort, physical examination by the physicians and serologic tests for hepatitis markers, some tumor markers, and lipid profile have been done, but not all. In order to provide an opportunity to incorporate barious biomarkers of exposure and effect as well as genetic susceptibility, a biologic tissue bank has been established from blood and urine sample(plasma, WBC buffy-coat, RBC clots, and urine supernatant) stored at-70degrees C. Re-examination of changes in exposere to risk factors will be done periodically. Disease occurrence will be ascertained by the active(mainly through diagnosis by physicians) and the passive surveillance(through both death certificate and screening of medical utilization records).
