Twenty-five paraffin-embedded tumor tissues were analyzed for detection of HPV 16 and 18 in cervical adenocarcinoma by polymerase chain reaction with type specific primers and by non-radioactive Southern blot hybridization for confirmation . The suitability of paraffin-embedded tissue as PCR material was confirmed by successful amplification of 100% of cervical specimens with human -globin specific primer. Eighty four percent of the cervical adenocarcinoma tissues were positive for HPV 16 and/or 18. HPV 16 positive rate was 68%, HPV 18 was 60%. The double infection with HPV 16 and 18 was found in 44%. Three cases of the negative specimen in PCR for each type of HPV DNA 16 and 18 were positive in Southern blot hybridization. The total positive rate was 92% for HPV 16 and/or HPV 18, HPV 16 positive rate was 80%. HPV 18 was 72%. The double infection with HPV 16 and 18 was 60%. These results suggest that the pattern of HPV types 16 and 18 is closely associated with carcinogenesis of cervical cancers. HPV type 18 appears to be preferentially related to cervical adenocarcinoma and the poor prognosis of these patients. Therefore, determination of HPV DNA type in cervical carcinoma patients is important in treatment and prognosis.

Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow 2016;19(3):179-185
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease with medication as the treatment of choice. However, surgical treatment is recommended when no improvement is noted despite aggressive conservative treatment. Synovectomy provides desirable outcomes for RA patients in the early stage with a glenohumeral joint of Larsen grade II or less; conversely, arthroplasty is recommended for patients with a glenohumeral joint of grade III or higher. RA patients often have attenuation and dysfunction of the rotator cuff, and reverse shoulder arthroplasty has been proven to provide favorable outcomes in some patients. RA is often complicated with osteoporosis and bony deformity; therefore, close attention is necessary to prevent fractures during shoulder arthroplasty.

Speckled lentiginous nevus is a clinical variant of nevus-cell nevus first described by Stewart et al. in 1978. It is characterized by small, dark hyperpigmentated speckles superimposed on a tannish-brown background. The speckled areas show varying histologic patterns ranging from nevus incipiens to junctional or compound nevus. The back ground shows histologic features of Ientigo simplex. Recently, we observed clinical and histological features of 5 cases of speckled lentiginous nevi. The age of onset ranges from birth to infancy, The locations are face, thigh, back and scapula. One has zosteriform distribution in upper extrernity, chest and back. Histologic features of speckles are junctional or compound nevus. We suggest that the origin of dark speckles may be from the tannish-brown background, lentigo simplex.

We analyzed the mRNA expression patterns of major potassium channel genes to determine the
mechanism of hypokalemia in familial hypokalemic periodic paralysis. We used quantitative RT-PCR
to examine the mRNA levels of both inward (KCNJ2, KCNJ6, and KCNJ14) and delayed rectifi er
(KCNQ1 and KCNA2) potassium channel genes in skeletal muscle cells from both normal and patient
groups, prior to and after exposure to 4 mM and 50 mM potassium buffers. Quantitative RT-PCR
analysis revealed no changes in the mRNA levels of these genes in normal and patient cells on exposure
to 4 mM potassium buffer. However, after exposure to 50 mM potassium buffer, which was used to
induce depolarization, normal cells showed a signifi cant decrease in KCNJ2, KCNJ6, and KCNJ14
expression, but no change in KCNQ1 and KCNA2 expression. In contrast, patient cells showed no
change in KCNJ2 and KCNJ6 expression, but an increase in KCNJ14 expression. Furthermore, KCNQ1
and KCNA2 showed decreased expression. We found that the expression levels of both inward and
delayed rectifi er potassium channel genes in patient cells differ from those in normal cells. Altered
potassium channel gene expression in patient cells may suggest a possible mechanism for hypokalemia
in familial hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 1997;2(2):169-178
Thin study measured dietary intakes in late pregnancy and psychological stress during the period of gestation and examined the roles of diet and psychological stress in pregnancy weight gain and infant birth weight. Study subjects were 98 pregnant women who delivered infants at 2 general hospitals in Taejon city. Mean weight gain during pregnancy was 14.6+/-4.89Kg. Mean infant birth weight was 3.39+/-0.62kg in males and 3.28+/-0.43Kg in females. Mean energy and protein intake levels were adequate, but mean iron and calcium intakes were only 61.2+/-14.9% and 79.1+/-18.2% of RDA, respectively. Fat intake which constitutes 22.0+/-4.3% of total energy intake, and animal protein intake which constitutes 22.0+/-4.3% of total energy intake, and animal protein intake which constitutes 53.7% of total protein intake were moderately high. Though mean energy, fat, animal protein, and meat protein intakes in the low psychological stress group were higher than those in the middle or high stress group, psychological stress did not significantly affect pregnancy weight gain and infant birth weight. High intakes of nutrients except for dairy protein, iron, and niacin were associated with higher pregnancy weight gain and high intakes of protein and meat protein were associated with higher infant birth weight. It is concluded that dietary intakes during pregnancy has effects on pregnancy weight gain and infant birth weight, and psychological stress has no direct effect on them.

Eosinophilic granuloma of the lung, first described by Farrinaci et al. in 1951, is rare. A 35-year-old male smoker presented with recurrent pneumothorax. Open thoracotomy with bleb resection and biopsy was performed. Microscopically there was histological changes consistent with typical eosinophilic granuloma and intertitial fibrosis. The Langerhans cells showed positive reaction for S-100 protein and typical Birbeck granules in their cytoplasm. A brief summary of histopathological aspect of this disease and a review of literature are presented.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1994;29(3):745-753
Interlocking intramedullary nailing has many advantages for long bone fracture. However, we can meet many problems during the operative procedure. Among the patients who were treated with interlocking intramedullary nailing from March, 1990 to December, 1991, forty-eight patients(49 cases) of femur and tibia fracture who were followed up more than twelve months(average 14months: 12months 18months) were included in this study. 1) Forty-nine cases consisted of 20 cases(41%) of femur fracture and 29 cases(59%) of tibia fracture. 2) Two cases of proximal protrusion were developed because of inadequate implant length. 3) Operative complications were encountered with 3 cases of new fracture line, 1 case of new fragmentation, 1 case of reduction loss, 2 cases of failure of proximal targeting, 3 cases of failure of distal targeting, 2 cases of distraction of fracture site more than 3 mm, 1 case of sciatic nerve injury due to excessive traction and 1 case of tibial inlet error. 4) Postoperative complications were encountered with 1 case of distal targeting screw failure, 4 cases of infection and 8 cases of delayed union. 5) According to the result, sufficient planning and confirmations(preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively) can diminish the complications. And then the interlocking intramedullary nailing will be useful method in the case of long bone fracture when the operator has extensive experiences.

9.Effects of Educational Intervention about Breastfeeding on University Students' Knowledge and Attitudes toward Breastfeeding: Focusing on Gender Differences
Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2018;23(1):1-12
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a targeted, practical education intervention on university students' knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding. METHODS: A university curricular intervention was designed for students to increase their knowledge and positive attitude toward breastfeeding issues. The participants attended a breastfeeding education lectures two hours of weekly for fifteen weeks in university; 61 students (female, n=31 and male, n=30) participated. The pre- and post-measurements included future breastfeeding intention, knowledge, attitude and perceived control beliefs scores based on the results of a questionnaire. RESULTS: The statistical analysis results revealed a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores (0.57 to 5.10 points, p < 0.001) in regard to the students' breastfeeding knowledge. For female students, significant differences were observed in the future breastfeeding intention (p < 0.05), knowledge (p < 0.001), and attitudes towards breastfeeding (p < 0.05) between the pretest and posttest scores. For male students, there were no significant differences in the future breastfeeding intention, attitudes towards breastfeeding, and perceived control beliefs scores after the breastfeeding education lecture. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the implementation of practical breastfeeding educational interventions helped improve university students' knowledge and attitudes toward breastfeeding. In summary, despite the limitations, it is necessary to pay more attention to improving students' knowledge and attitudes towards breastfeeding through university curricula.
