OBJECTIVETo investigate the craniofacial and occlusal changes of Class III cases treated with Tip-Edge Plus Technique.
METHODSThirteen Class III patients (6 girls and 7 boys, mean age 14.9 years) with mandibular protrusion were selected. All the patients were four premolar extraction cases and treated with Tip-Edge Plus technique. Cephalometric analysis was performed to evaluate the changes before and after treatment.
RESULTSAfter treatment, Wits changed from (-2.50 +/- 1.40) mm to (-1.00 +/- 0.85) mm and ANB changed from (-0.61 +/- 1.41) degrees to (1.31 +/- 1.66) degrees (P < 0.05). UL-E and LL-E were decreased significantly from (7.55 +/- 1.24) mm to (4.82 +/- 1.05) mm and from (10.16 +/- 2.43) mm to (6.03 +/- 2.01) mm respectively (P < 0.01). The incisors were retracted. A remarkable soft tissue change was noted after the treatment. The difference between the distance of the upper lip and lower lip to SnPg' at the beginning of treatment changed from (-1.57 +/- 1.24) mm to (0.62 +/- 1.24) mm (P < 0.01). FCA changed from (2.62 +/- 1.53) degrees to (7.02 +/- 2.21) degrees .
CONCLUSIONSWith Tip-Edge Plus straight-wire technique and light continuous force, anterior teeth could be tipped distally and lingually quickly. The hard and soft tissues changed accordingly.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the craniofacial and occlusional changes of Class II patients treated with Tip-Edge Plus technique.
METHODSTwelve Class II patients (7 girls and 5 boys, mean age 14.3 years) with bimaxillary or maxillary protrusion were selected. All the patients were four first premolar extraction cases and treated with Tip-Edge Plus technique. Cephalometric analysis was performed to evaluate the changes before and after treatment.
RESULTSAfter treatment, the profile was greatly improved. UL-E, LL-E were decreased significantly (P < 0.01) and incisors were retracted (P < 0.05). Upper molars moved forward slightly (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe anchorage control in Tip-Edge Plus technique was effective without extraoral force, palatal arch and implants. Under very light force, the crown of anterior teeth tipped distally and lingually quickly. In the final stage, it was possible to achieve both desired root uprighting and crown torque.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the feasibility and reliability on the quantitative evaluation of Colles' fracture by multislice CT (MSCT) multiplanner reconstruction (MPR).
METHODSA total of 36 patients with Colles' fracture from July 2011 to July 2014 were investigated in this study. There were 11 males and 25 females with a mean age of (42.5 ± 5.4) years old (ranged 35 to 72 years). All the patients underwent anteroposterior and lateral X-ray films and MSCT scans on wrist joints within 2 days after trauma. Images were sent to the workstation through picture archiving and conserving system (PACS). One associate chief physician independently and respectively measured the dorsal intercalation depth of distal fracture block, palmar angle and dislocation degree of wrist articular surface collapse on anteroposterior and lateral X-ray film and MSCT-MPR. The time interval between the two measurements was 2 weeks. All the data between the first and second measurement on X-ray and MPR and the mean value between the X-ray and MPR was examined with paired t-test. The pearson analyzed their correlation.
RESULTSAmong the 35 cases, 35 cases of palmar angle, 21 cases of intercalation depth and 16 cases of dislocation of wrist articular surface collapse could be measured on both X-ray and MPR. For the above parameters, the first measurement results were (12.5 ± 3.6)°, (4.5 ± 2.1) mm, (3.7 ± 1.6) mm and the second measurement results were (4.8 ± 2.2)°, (6.4 ± 3.6) mm, (2.5 ± 1.2) mm on X-ray films respectively. The first measurement results on MPR were (14.5 ± 5.3)°, (4.2 ± 1.2) mm, (5.7 ± 2.3) mm, and the results were (13.2 ± 2.6)°, (4.7 ± 2.2) mm, (4.6 ± 2.1) mm for the second measurement respectively. The three parameters between the first and second measurement on plain film had statistical difference and low correlation (r = 0.681, 0.640, 0.345, P < 0.05). The data between the first and second measurement on MPR showed that the dislocation degree of wrist articular surface collapse had statistical difference (P < 0.05) and no statistical significance was found for the other two parameters (P > 0.05), with the moderate correlation (r = 0.954, 0.854, 0.642). The three parameters had low or moderate correlation with each other on X-ray (r = 0.454, 0.532, 0.378, P < 0.05), compared with the mean value on MPR.
CONCLUSIONUsing MSCT MPR images may carry on the multiple parameter measurement of Colles fracture, to make quantitative evaluation, and repeated measurement is better reliability.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the cellular effects of Pien Tze Huang (PZH) in the HT-29 human colon carcinoma cell line.
METHODSThe viability of HT-29 cells was determined by MTT assay. A fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis with annexin-V/propidium iodide (PI) and JC-1 staining were performed to determine cell apoptosis and the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, respectively. Activation of caspase 3 was evaluated by a colorimetric assay. The mRNA expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax were measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
RESULTSPZH, in a dose- and time-dependent manner, reduced viability and induced apoptosis of HT-29 cells. Moreover, PZH treatment resulted in the collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential, activation of caspase 3, and an increase in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio.
CONCLUSIONPZH inhibits the growth of HT-29 cells by inducing cancer cell apoptosis via regulation of the Bcl-2 family and activation of caspase 3, which may, in part, explain its anticancer activity.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of Chinese herbal medicine for nourishing yin, supplementing qi, and activating blood on the expression of interferon-γ (IFN-γ)/interleukin-4 (IL-4) in peripheral blood and disease activity in primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) patients, and to study the relationship between the immune balance of Th1/Th2 and the disease activity.
METHODSA total of 66 pSS patients were randomized with tossing coins method into two groups: the integrative therapy group (34 cases) and the control group (32 cases); and 28 healthy subjects were taken as the normal group. The integrative therapy group was treated by Chinese herbal medicines for nourishing yin, supplementing qi, and activating blood combined with hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets and the control group was treated with hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets. The treatment course was 3 months for both groups. The levels of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), IFN-γ and IL-4 in peripheral blood were measured before and after treatment.
RESULTSCompared with the normal group, the levels of IgG, ESR, IFN-γ and IL-4 were significantly increased in pSS patients (P<0.05). Remarkably, after 3 months of treatment, these levels were dramatically decreased in both the integrative therapy group and the control group, although still higher than the normal group. The levels of IgG, ESR, IFN-γ and IL-4 in the integrative therapy group were lower than the control group and the same group before treatment (P<0.05). The ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 also significantly decreased after treatment. Moreover, the level of IFN-γ and the ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 in the integrative therapy group were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). For all patients the ratio of IFN-γ/IL-4 before and after treatment was positive correlated with the levels of IgG and ESR.
CONCLUSIONChinese herbal medicine for nourishing yin, supplementing qi, and activating blood can alleviate the disease activity of pSS by regulating the immune balance of Th1/Th2.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes of available spaces of posterior arch segments in mandibular dentition from 13 to 18 years of age, which would provide information for space analysis of whole dental arch in adolescents.
METHODSTwenty-six adolescents (12 males, 14 females) with normal occlusion were selected. All of the subjects had lateral cephalograms taken at the same time each year for 6 years. Longitudinal cephalometry and statistic analysis were conducted for all subjects.
RESULTSSignificant differences of available space were found between males and females. The growth of available space from 13 to 18 years of age was 5.12 mm in females and 5.79 mm in males. The completion of mandibular remodeling in males lagged behind females for about 1 year. No significant increase was found in girls beyond 16 years and in boys beyond 17 years. There was a 1.22 mm increase on each side per year in females until 16 years and a 1.45 mm increase in males until 17 years. The increase of available space was made partly by resorption of bone from the anterior border of the ramus and partly by mesial movement of the first molar. The mesial movement of dental arch was probably stimulated by the eruption of the third molars.
CONCLUSIONSThe prediction of available space should be based on age and sex.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2010;16(2):109-113
OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical combination effect of Jinlong Capsule (JLC) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) on the patients with primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC) and JLC' s influence on serum osteopontin (OPN) expression and elucidate the correlation between the serum OPN level and curative effect of JLC and TACE.
METHODSA total of 98 patients with PHC were observed in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). They were assigned to the Chinese medicine (CM) group (53 patients who were treated with TACE and JLC) and the intervention group (45 patients who were treated with TACE only). The serum OPN levels were measured before and after treatment by quantitative sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Forty healthy people were assigned to the control group. The clinical efficacy was observed and Karnofsky score (KPS) was graded.
RESULTSThe clinical efficacy of the CM group (60.38%) was better than that of the intervention group (40.00 %), and the KPS (84.35+/-12.19) was higher than the intervention group (69.86+/- 11.58) (P<0.05). The serum OPN levels before and after treatment in the patients with PHC were significantly elevated compared with those in the control group (P<0.01). After treatment, the OPN levels in CM group (117.69 <+/-78.50) were significantly lower compared with those in intervention group (151.09+/-83.90, P<0.05). The OPN levels of responders were remarkably lowered than the non-responders after treatment, and the level of OPN in the CM group was lower than the intervention group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe short-term clinical efficacy and the quality of life of patients with PHC can be improved by combining JLC with TACE. The serum OPN levels in PHC patients can reflect the curative effect of treatment and the prognosis of the disease.
