By bibliometric method, acupuncture-moxibustion literature from 2003 to 2013 included by SCIE and GoPubMed was analyzed. The number of annually published literature, distribution of country, agency and area, author, journal, subject category, high-frequency words and H index were analyzed to explore the current situation and development trend of acupuncture and moxibustion.

OBJECTIVETo compare the efficacy difference in treatment of acute gouty arthritis between acupuncture combined with infrared irradiation and Indomethachin as well as observe the impacts on liver function.

METHODSOne hundred and sixty cases of gout were randomized into an acupuncture group (80 cases) and an Indomethachin group (80 cases). In acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied to Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Quchi (LI 11), Xuehai (SP 10), Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Ashi points. Additionally, infrared irradiation was used in the local area. The treatment was given once daily. In Indomethachin group, Indomethachin was taken orally, 25 mg each time, three times per day. The treatment lasted for 5 days in either group. Separately, before and after treatment, pain severity and the levels of blood uric acid (BUA), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were detected. Additionally, the efficacy and the impacts on liver function were assessed.

RESULTSThe curative rate was 52.5% (42/80) in acupuncture group, which was superior to 22.5% (18/80) in Indomethachin group (P < 0.01). In acupuncture group, the analgesia efficacy was better than that in Indomethachin group (P < 0.01) and the effect on reducing BUA and ERS levels was same as that in Indomethachin group (all P > 0.05). After treatment, ALT and AST levels had no changes in acupuncture group, but they increased apparently in Indomethachin group (all P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture combined with infrared irradiation achieves superior efficacy on acute gouty arthritis as compared with oral medication of Indomethachin and the therapy provides a significant effect on analgesia and does not bring the damage of liver function.

OBJECTIVETo study the content variation of furmarid acid and isofraxidin in Sarcandra glabra from 21 different provenances and provide the basis for resource utilization and quality optimization of S. glabra.

METHODHPLC method was developed to determine the contents of furmarid acid and isofraxidin in 330 samples of S. glabra which were collected respectively from 21 different provenances.

RESULTThere were significant differences in the contents of isofraxidin and furmarid acid in S. glabra from different provenances. The contents of isofraxidin and furmarid acid dropped off from low altitude to high altitude, which were also close with longitude and latitude. The content of isofraxidin in S. glabra at central area of natural distribution was the highest. The different parts of the plant had different results, the influence on the contents of the acitive components in stem were more obvious than the leaf.

CONCLUSIONThis simple, accurate and reproducible method could be use to determine the contents of furmarid acid and isofraxidin in S. glabra. The results represented the status of medicines quality and difference of Chinese S. glabra. These agreed with the traditional views that the medicines quality of Sarcandra glabra in Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang was better. These provenances were considered as important areas of medicines breeding and bases building on S. glabra in future.

【Objective】 To construct an acute toxoplasma encephalitis mouse model by observing the pathological changes in the hippocampus of mice infected with Toxoplasma gondii strain RH. 【Methods】 The quantitative RH Toxoplasma gondii (100, 500, and 1 000 trophozoites) were injected into the hippocampal CA1 region of mice by the stereotaxic surgery; the survival status of mice was observed. Giemsa staining was used to observe the changes of toxoplasma in mouse ascites and brain tissue homogenates. Nissl staining and HE staining were used to observe the pathological changes of hippocampal nerve tissue. The distribution of Toxoplasma gondii in brain tissue was observed by immunohistochemical ABC method. 【Results】 The RH Toxoplasma gondii infected mice showed obvious symptoms such as arched back, bristling hair, abdominal distension, subtle tremor and hemiplegia on the fourth day of infection. The survival of mice in 100 trophozoites group was longer, no trophozoites of Toxoplasma gondii were found in ascites, a few pseudocysts were found in brain tissue homogenates after infected for 96 hours, and more trophozoites were found after death. Nysl staining and HE staining showed more tissue necrosis foci and loss of nerve cells in CA1 area after infected 144 h. The injury aggravated with the prolongation of infection time. Toxoplasma trophozoites were found in ascites and brain homogenates of mice in 500 and 1000 trophozoites groups. Nissl staining revealed neuronal loss and massive necrosis in the hippocampus. HE staining showed necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration. The brain tissue injury significantly aggravated compared with 100 trophozoites group. The distribution of Toxoplasma gondii in the necrotic foci was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. 【Conclusion】 The survival of 100 trophozoite mice infected with Toxoplasma gondii strain RH was longer, and the pathological changes of brain tissue gradually aggravated. The damage was relatively confined to the brain tissue, and the mice showed typical symptoms of toxoplasma encephalitis. Therefore, the mouse model of acute toxoplasma encephalitis can be constructed by localized infection of 100 toxoplasma trophozoites, which can lay a foundation for future research on the mechanism of toxoplasma injury to cranial nerves.

Background Lead is widely distributed. Lead exposure interferes with early life development in zebrafish, but the mechanisms by which lead exposure affects skeletal development and cardiac development are not clear as yet. Objective To investigate the molecular mechanisms of bone development and cardiac development toxicity induced by lead acetate exposure. Methods Zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations of lead acetate (0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 μmol·L⁻¹) for 3 h post-fertilization (3 hpf) until 5 d post-fertilization (5 dpf). The malformation phenotypes of 5 dpf were counted, and the mRNA expressions of spinal development-related genes (bmp2b, bmp4, bmp9, runx2a, runx2b) and heart development-related genes (nkx2.5, myh6, myh7) were detected by quantitative PCR (qPCR). Expressions of genes of development-related regulatory pathways including Wnt/β-catenin pathway (wnt5a, wnt8a, wnt10a, β-catenin) and TGF-β pathway (tgf-β1, tgf-β2) as well as key molecule eph of Eph-Ephrin signaling were analyzed. Results At 5 dpf, the zebrafish in the lead acetate treated groups showed deformed phenotypes including spinal curvature and pericardial sac edema compared to the control group. In the lead acetate groups at 24 and 48 μmol·L⁻¹, the spinal curvature deformity rates reached 26.47% and 71.52% (P<0.01) respectively. The qPCR results revealed that the expression levels of spinal development-related genes bmp2b, bmp4, bmp9, runx2a, and runx2b were downregulated in the 48 μmol·L⁻¹ exposure group compared to the control group by 82.8%, 58.0%, 88.7%, 85.5%, and 69.2%, respectively (P<0.05 or P<0.01); the expression levels of heart development-related genes myh6, myh7, and nkx2.5 were down-regulated by 63.7%, 58.9%, and 55.2%, respectively (P<0.01); the expression levels of wnt8a and β-catenin in the Wnt/β-catenin pathway were down-regulated by 71.5% and 47.3% (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), respectively; the expression level of tgf- β1 in the TGF-β pathway was down-regulated by 67.5% (P<0.01); the expression level of eph was down-regulated by 86.9% (P<0.01). Conclusion Lead acetate exerts developmental toxic effects on zebrafish heart and bone by down-regulating the expressions of genes related to spinal development and heart development, as well as inhibiting development-related Wnt/β-catenin and TGF-β pathways and Eph-Ephrin signaling, causing malformed phenotypes such as spinal curvature and pericardial sac edema.
