1.Effect of Dietary Supplement Use on Pregnancy

Quality nutrition is vital for fetal growth and maternal health, because the nutritional status of the fetus is directly affected by the mother’s nutritional intake. A lack of certain nutrients can lead to unfavorable consequences for both the fetus and mother. The intake of nutritional supplements is increasing worldwide. Korea has been experiencing population aging and low birth rate and has shown an increasing interest in nutritional supplements for pregnant women. This review discusses the 5 critical nutrients for pregnant women as determined by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in 2021, namely folic acid, iron, omega-3, vitamin D, and calcium. This review determined the upper safety limits of these nutritional supplements for pregnant women based on previous researches. Obstetricians and other physicians should be consulted regarding the nutritional supplements recommended for pregnant women.
2.Fetal biometry measurements in diabetic pregnant women and neonatal outcomes

Objective:
In this study, we aimed to investigate how fetal head and abdominal circumferences are related to the incidence of neonatal complications in mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) compared to normal pregnancies.
Methods:
We retrospectively analyzed data of expectant mothers with GDM, PGDM, and normal pregnancies who delivered singleton full-term infants (≥37 weeks) at a tertiary center from January 2013 to December 2022. Ultrasonography-measured fetal weight, fetal head circumference, fetal abdominal circumference, difference between head and abdominal circumference, and head-to-abdominal circumference ratio were assessed. Neonatal outcomes were evaluated based on the rates of admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, intubation, and hypoglycemia. Statistical analyses, including univariate and multivariate analyses, were performed using the SPSS software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).
Results:
Among the 473 participants, 175 (37.0%) were mothers with diabetes (DM). A head-to-abdominal circumference ratio <0.95 and a difference of ≥2.5 cm were significantly associated with neonatal hypoglycemia in all mothers with DM, with statistical significance noted only in the PGDM group. No significant association was observed in normal pregnancies.
Conclusion
Our findings indicate that a head-to-abdominal circumference ratio <0.95 and a ≥2.5 cm difference in circumferences are associated with neonatal hypoglycemia in mothers with DM.

7.Thick “Swiss Cheese” Appearance of Uterine Endometrium in Postmenopausal Women with Different Gynecologic Conditions

OBJECTIVES: To uncover gynecologic conditions with similar transvaginal sonographic findings of thick uterine endometrium with honeycomb appearance in pre-and postmenopausal women.METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed cases of patients with endometrial tissue biopsy from January 2010 to December 2016. We also collected office flexible hysteroscopic findings and surgical pathologic results. We analyzed data from 393 patients with confirmed endometrial pathology. Among these patients, 69 had transvaginal ultrasonographic images with thick uterine endometrium and honeycomb or “Swiss cheese” appearance.RESULTS: We found gynecologic conditions such as submucosal leiomyoma with degeneration, endometrial polyp, pseudocystic endometrial change associated with tamoxifen use, progesterone associated endometrial change, pyometra, retained placenta, and uterine synechiae manifested with similar thick endometrium with “Swiss cheese” appearance in transvaginal sonographic images. The most common diagnosis in postmenopausal women was atrophic endometritis, followed by endometrial cancer and endometrial polyps. The most common diagnosis in premenopausal women was abnormal uterine bleeding without pathologic conditions.CONCLUSIONS: Sonographic findings of thick uterine endometrium with “Swiss cheese” appearance need to be considered together with a thorough review of the patient's history and chief complaint before making a tentative diagnosis due to the various conditions sharing the feature.
