Purpose To investigate the association between the macular volume and thickness,as assessed by optical coherence tomography(OCT),with refraction state and axial length(AL)in children. Methods A total of 100 normal children whose right eyes were randomly selected were divided into five groups due to their refraction, comprising hyperopia, emmetropia, low myopia, moderate myopia, high myopia. The AL of the eyes was measured by IOL master measuring machine. Then the macular volume and thickness were measured bv OCT.Results Children with high myopia have smaller macular volume and thinner parafoveal retinal thickness(especially out-ring macular). The minimum thickness and average thickness of the fovea were not significantly different among the five groups. The macular volume ,total average macular thickness and quadrant-specific macular thickness(except the nasal inner quadrants)were positively associated with refraction and negatively associated with AL,while there were no correlation between minimum foveal thickness, the average foveal thickness and refraction or AL.Conclusions In Chinese children, increasing axial length was associated with reduced maeular volume and thickness(except the foveal region and the nasal inner quadrant).

Objective To observe the impacts of different storage temperatures on the activities of adipose tissues and the extraction and proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) situated in harvested fat. Methods Adipose tissues obtained by liposuctions in healthy females were kept in different temperature;all groups of adipose tissues were studied in context of the histomorphology and activity of GAPD as well as the extraction efficiency and proliferation of ADSCs.Results Adipose tissues cryopreserved at 4 ℃ within 24 hours could retain their activities effectively, but their activities would decrease rapidly if they preserved at room temperature. The efficiency of adipose tissues extracting stem cells and their proliferations were affected by storage temperatures and times. If adipose tissues were preserved at room temperature for over 1 hour, the extraction efficiency and proliferation of their ADSCs would be lower significantly. Conclusions Adipose tissues cryopreserved at 4 ℃ can effectively ensure their activities and their extraction efficiency and proliferation of ADSCs.It is important to preserve adipose tissues at low temperature after harvesting fat graft.

OBJECTIVETo study the relationship between sub-health status and the health-promoting lifestyle of employees.
METHODSA total of 5316 employees in a company in Guangdong were surveyed using sub-health measurement scale version 1.0 (SHMS V1.0) and the health-promoting lifestyle profile (HPLP-II). The former scale included 3 subscales of somatic sub-health, psychological sub-health and social sub-health, and the latter included 6 subscales of self-actualization, healthy responsibility, physical exercise, nutrition, interpersonal sensitivity and stress treatment.
RESULTSThe total healthy rate was 12.86% among the employees, with 76.76% and 10.5% in sub-health and disease states. The mean scores of HPLP-II was 115.95∓21.468 in the total population surveyed, 134.23∓24.72 in healthy employees and 114.69∓19.25 in the patients. There was a significant difference in the grades of health-promoting lifestyle between sub-healthy and healthy employees (P<0.05) as well as in the scores of HPLP-II and the scores of the 6 subscales (P<0.05). An appreciable correlation was found between sub-health status and the 6 subscales, and self-realization, physical exercise and stress management showed significant inverse correlation with sub-health status.
CONCLUSIONSub-health status is related to health-promoting lifestyle, and self-realization, physical exercise and management are the protective factors that influence sub-health status.

OBJECTIVETo detect structural changes in the brain in fetuses with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and holoprosencephaly (HPE) in the first trimester.
METHODSThe ultrasound data were analyzed retrospectively in 620 normal singleton fetuses between 11 and 13(+6) gestational weeks, 5 fetuses diagnosed to have ACC, and 13 fetuses with HPE. The midbrain diameter (MD) and falx diameter (FD) were measured and their ratio (MD/FD) was calculated for comparative analysis.
RESULTSNo significant difference was found in the MD, FD, and MD/FD ratio between fetuses with ACC and HPE (P>0.05). Compared to the normal fetuses, all the fetuses with ACC and HPE showed significantly increased mean MD and MD/FD ratio (P<0.05); 4 (80%) fetuses with ACC and 11 (84.6%) with HPE had a reduced FD. All the fetuses with ACC and HPE had MD/FD ratios greater than 1, which were below 1 in all the normal fetuses.
CONCLUSIONIn the first trimester, fetuses with ACC and HPE have measurable abnormalities in the midbrain and falx area of the brain, and these changes, represented by abnormal midsagittal MD, FD and their ratio, can be of value in detecting ACC or HPE in fetuses in the first trimester.

Objective To evaluate the position of the fetal conus medullaris during pregnancy and its value in detecting tethered cord syndrome(TCS). Methods Nine hundred and seventy-four normal fetuses and 46 fetuses with TCS between 15 and 41 weeks gestation were involved in the study.Parameters D 1 (the distance between the end of the conus medullaris and the caudal edge of last vertebral body ossification center) and D2 (the distance from the end of the conus medullaris to the caudal skin namely the intersection point of the extending line of D1 and the skin) were measured in the caudal midsagittal plane of the spine. Sixty normal fetuses were chosed randomly for interobserver variability.Correlation analysis between these two parameters and gestational age(GA) were conducted and the normal reference value of these parameters were calculated in normal group. The ratios of growth parameters ( Biparietal diameter, Head circumference,Abdominal circumference,Femur length) to D1 and D2 were calculated separately to observe the difference of the ratios between two groups. All the parameters and ratios of normal fetuses were compared with that of TCS cases. Results There was no significant difference in D1 and D2 between two observers.A significant linear correlation between the parameters and GA was found in normal group, linear regression equations were D1=0.251 GA -2.265 cm (R2=0.926,P <0.01) and D2=0.267 GA -1.812 cm(R2=0.928,P <0.01),respectively.D1 and D2 were much lower in normal group than in abnormal group (all P <0.01). The ratios of the growth parameters to D1 and D2 were relatively stable and had statistically differences between two groups in different gestational age. Conclusions The methods that determination of D1 and D2 are simple and feasible, and could help to the prenatal diagnosis of TCS.
