1.Kluver-Bucy Syndrome (review)
Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2006;12(12):1076-1077
Kluver-Bucy syndrome (KBS) is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder. The characteristics of KBS include visual agnosia, hyperorality, changes in dietary habits, hypermetamorphosis, placidity, hypersexuality, and etc. However, some features like aphasia, amnesia, dementia and seizure are probably exclusive to humans. KBS is usually associated with lesions of the bilateral temporal lobe.

The Notch pathway is an evolutionarily conserved signal transduction pathway. It consists of a complex system of interaction. Its function is associated with the embryonic development and cell differentiation regulation. Studies in recent years have demonstrated that Notch pathway is associated with specific human diseases, in which Notch3 signaling pathway is closely associated with the nervous system development and the structural integrity of blood vessels. Notch3 mutation may cause cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy.

Objective To investigate the effect of atorvastatin on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and BP in hypertensive patients with normal lipid profiles. Methods Thirty-eight hypertensive patients were randomly to receive conventional anti-hypertensive drugs (n=18) or conventional anti-hypertensive drugs plus atorvastatin(20 mg QN)combination treatment (n=20).Eight healthy subjects were given atorvastatin (20 mg QN) for 8 weeks as control group. Before and after treatment, peripheral blood were drawn to isolate and culture EPCs.The circulating EPCs were identified by direct fluorescent staining under a laser scanning confocal micro- scope.EPCs populations were assessed using the colony forming unit assay (EPC-CFU) through a inverted phase contrast microscope 10 days after culture. Results After treatment,SBP was decreased (conventional treatment from 165.8?10.3 to 132.7?10.3 mmHg;combined group from 163.7?10.2 to 127.9?10.1 mmHg P

Objective To analyze the clinical features and causes of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV).Methods The clinical data of 521 patients with BPPV were collected. The percentage of patients with BPPV in all the outpatients with dizziness and vertigo, the clinical characteristics of BPPV,and the prevalence of comorbidity with migraine were analyzed. Results BPPV accounted for 35.7% of patients with vertigo and 12.1% of patients with dizziness.Among the 521 patients with BPPV,158(30.3%)were male and 363(69.7%)were female, with an average age of(57.5?12.8)years old(20 to 93 years old).Right semicircular canals were involved in 323 cases(62.0%),and left semicircular canals in 187 cases(35.9%).The latency period of nystagmus of vertical canals was(3.22?2.37)s,and time of persistence was(8.31?7.98)s.The latency period of nystagmus of horizontal canals was(2.33?1.50)s,and the time of persistence was(14.77?11.40)s.There were significant differences in the latency period of nystagmus and time of persistence between the vertical and horizontal canals(P=0.001 and P=0.000).Fifteen patients(2.9%)had a history of head trauma and 39(7.5%)were complicated with migraine. Conclusion BPPV is prevalent in patients with dizziness and vertigo, and misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis should be avoided.

Objectives To investigate the relationships of the expressions of heat shock protein 70(HSP70) and HSP90 genes in bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) with glucocorticoid (GC)-resistence (GCR) in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. Methods The expressions of HSP70 and HSP90 in bone marrow mononuclear cells from 43 newly diagnosed ALL patients and 16 healthy volunteers were examined by real time polymerase chain reaction.Of them,43 patients received glucocorticoid therapy were divided into GC-sensitive (GCS) group and GC-resistant(GCR) group according to GC response. Results (1)The expressions of HSP70 mRNA (0.95 ± 0.36) and HSP90 mRNA (1.97 ± 0.63) in BMMNCs from ALL patients were significantly higher than that in the controls [(0.28 ±0.17)and (0.62 ±0.21),P<0.01]; (2)The expressions of HSP70 mRNA(1.09 ± 0.22)and HSP90 mRNA(2.18 ± 0.42) in BMMNCs from GCR group patients were significantly higher than that in the GCS group patients [(0.57 ±0.19)and (1.43 ± 0.35),P < 0.05,P < 0.01] ; (3)The expressions of HSP70 mRNA (0.97 ± 0.34)and HSP90 mRNA (2.01 ± 0.58) in BMMNCs from the ALL patients with high-degree tumor burden were significantly higher than that in the patients with low-degree tumor burden [(0.61 ±0.22) and (1.34 ±0.29),P <0.01].Conclusions The mRNA expressions of HSP70 and HSP90 in BMMNCs from GCR group patients were significantly increased.Detection of HSP90 and HSP70 expressions may help ALL patients for prognosis judgment, chemotherapy plan selection and therapeutic effect evaluation.
