Objective To investigate the potential relationship between initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and treatment outcomes. Methods From 1997 to 2009, 41 patients with DTC lung metastases were treated in the authors' department. 131Ⅰ whole body scan (WBS), serum Tg levels and other imaging results were analyzed to evaluate the therapeutic effects. Complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) was considered to be effective. The x2 test and correlation analysis were performed using SPSS 11.5 software package. Results 131 Ⅰ treatment was effective in 63% (26/41) patients with DTC lung metastases, CR in 8 patients and PR in 18 patients. In other 37% ( 15/41 ) patients, 131Ⅰ treatment was ineffective, including one case died of distant metastases. Patients with initial presence of 131Ⅰ lung uptake had higher effective rate than those with 131Ⅰ lung uptake during the second or later 131Ⅰ treatment (76% (22/29)vs33% (4/12),x2 =4.911, P=0.027). Also, significantly higher effective rate was found in patients with lung metastases alone than those with extra-pulmonary metastases (75% (24/32) vs 22% (2/9), x2 = 6. 312, P =0.012). However, the effective rate in patients with diffuse metastases was not significantly different from that in patients with focal metastases (67% (12/18)vs 61% ( 14/23), x2 =0. 146, P=0.702). The positive rate of initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases was higher in patients with total thyroidectomy than those with partial thyroidectomy (83% (24/29) vs 42% (5/12) ). Those positive rates in patients with papilary DTC and patients with follicular DTC were 72% (23/32) and 6/9, respectively. The surgical mode was correlated with the initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases (r = 0.411, P < 0.05), but no correlation was found between the histological type and the initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases ( r = 0. 047, P > 0.05 ). Conclusion Initial uptake of 131 Ⅰ by lung metastases alone is a favorable prognostic factor for DTC patients treated by131Ⅰ, and total thyroidectomy may be beneficial for initial 131Ⅰ uptake by lung metastases.

OBJECTIVE:To study the anti-inflammatory effect of Xinfeng capsule on adjuvant arthritis (AA) in rats. METH-ODS:70 SD rats were randomized into a normal control group(isovolumetric normal saline),a model control group(isovolumet-ric normal saline),a positive control TCM group [Qufeng zhitong capsule 0.4 g(crude drug)/kg],a positive control chemical medi-cine group(Leflunomide tablet 2.1 mg/kg)and groups of low, middle and high doses of Xinfeng capsule, which were respectively marked as groups A,B,C,D,E,F and G. All groups of rats except for Group A were given freund’s complete adjuvant intracu-taneous injection to establishe AA models, and from the 12th day after the inflammation was induced, were given the correspond-ing drug,ig,for 28 consecutive days. The degree of toe swelling and arthritis index were determined and calculated for all groups of rats before and after the administration. The contents of interleukin 1β(IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α) in serum and synovial membrane of all groups of rats were determined 24 h after the last administration, and pathomorphological changes of their ankles were observed by light microscope. RESULTS:Compared to group A,group B demonstrated higher degree of toe swelling, arthritis index and contents of IL-1β and TNF-α in serum and synovial membrane, with statistical significance(P<0.01). After the administration, the degree of toe swelling and arthritis index of groups C,D,E,F and G reduced, with statistical signifi-cance(P<0.05). Compared to group B,groups C,D,E,F and G showed lower degree of toe swelling, arthritis index and con-tents of IL-1β and TNF-α in serum and synovial membrane, with statistical significance(P<0.01 or P<0.05). Synovial membrane hyperplasia and inflammatory cell infiltration were noted in the ankle tissue of the rats in group B,and such symptoms were not so serious in groups C,D,F and G. CONCLUSIONS:Xinfeng capsule has anti-inflammatory effect for AA rats by a mechanism which may be related to accelerating synoviocyte apoptosis and inhibiting synovial membrane hyperplasia.

OBJECTIVETo examine the effect of ONO-AE3-208, an EP4 antagonist, on the formation of bone metastasis from prostate cancer in mice.
METHODSThirty-four 6-week old nude mice were divided into an experimental and a control group of equal number to be treated by intraperitoneal injection of ONO-AE3-208 and double distilled water, respectively. Then PC3/LUC cells were constructed by stably transfecting luciferin to prostate cancer PC3 cells and inoculated into the left ventricle of the mice to establish an animal model of systemic bone metastasis. The time of metastasis formation, photon tumor burdens, and changes of the survival curves after modeling were compared between the two groups of mice.
RESULTSAt 30 days after modeling, bioluminescence imaging analysis showed that the photon tumor burdens were significantly increased in a time-dependent manner in the control group in comparison with those in the experimental group (P < 0.01). The rate of metastasis formation was significantly higher in the former than in the latter (93.3% vs 33.3%, P < 0.001). The median time of metastasis formation was 29 d (95% CI 26.547 - 35.262) in the experimental animals as compared with 21 d (95% CI 17.213 -24.787) in the controls (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONEP4 antagonist ONO-AE3-208 can inhibit the formation of bone metastasis from prostate cancer in mice.
