It is a difficult problem of forensic medicine to accurately estimate the post-mortem interval. Entomological approach has been regarded as an effective way to estimate the post-mortem interval. The developmental biology of carrion-breeding flies has an important position at the post-mortem inter-val estimation. Phorid flies are tiny and occur as the main or even the only insect evidence in relatively enclosed environments. This paper reviews the research progress of carrion-breeding phorid flies for esti-mating post-mortem interval in forensic medicine which includes their roles, species identification and age determination of immatures.

flow cytometry.A strong linear relationship was observed in the standard curve of real-time PCR of each bacteria. Conclusion These three non-culture methods can be used in the quantitative analysis of oral microorganisms.Real-time PCR and laser scanning confocal microscopy are better than the traditional culture-based CFU count, and real-time PCR is the most sensitive method.

Objective To detect the differential gene expression between Streptococcus sobrinus(S.sobrinus) 6715 and its fluoride-resistant strains. Methods The fluoride-resistant strains of S.sobrinus 6715 was induced by increasing the concentration of fluoride step by step.Total RNA of both S.sobrinus 6715 and its fluoride-resistant strains was extracted,mRNA was separated and purificated, and then cDNA was obtained by reversed transcription.Suppression subtractive hybridization(SSH) technology was used to detect the differential gene expression between them. The differential gene expression fragments were cloned and compared with the GenBank by BLAST.Results After comparing with the GenBank by BLAST,it was identified that there were two differential gene expression fragments, fruA and SMU.438c. Conclusion The cDNA subtractive lib of differential gene expression between S.sobrinus 6715 and its fluoride-resistant strains was successfully constructed through SSH,which paves a way for the further study of fluoride-resistant mechanism.

Objective To explore the effect of early comprehensive rehabilitation therapy on dysphagia after stroke. Methods A total of 120 stroke patients with dysphagia were collected from December 2006 to May 2009 and divided into 3 trial groups and a control group randomly. No treatment was given to patients in the control group.Patients in trial group 1(T1)were given rehabilitation training, while patients in trial groups 2(T2)and 3(T3)were treated with VitalStim and electrical acupuncture, respectively,in addition to the rehabilitation training.A standardized swallowing assessment (SSA) and the swallowing quality of life(SWAL-QOL) scale were used to evalu-ate all the patients before and after 4 weeks of treatment. ResuIts No statistically significant difference was re-vealed before the treatment among the groups in terms of the patients'sex, age, course of disease,SSA or SWAL-QOL results.Statistically significant improvement was observed after treatment in the 3 trial group, but not in the control group with regard to the SSA and SWAL-QOL scores compared with those before treatment. The trial groups all had higher scores than the control group after treatment.while T2 and T3 had higher scores than T1 after treatment. There was no statistically significant difference between groups T2 and T3.Conclusions Early compre-hensive rehabilitation therapy can improve swallowing and the quality of life of stroke patients with dysphagia.Reha-bilitation combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation provides effects similar to that of training combined with electrical accupuneture, and is more effective than simple training in treating dysphagia.

AIMTo explore the effects of M3 receptor on myocyte apoptosis induced by acute myocardial infarction in rats.
METHODSRat model was induced by ligation of the anterior branch of the left coronary artery. All animals were divided into four groups: sham-operated group, occlusion group, choline group (10 mg x kg(-1), iv), and 4DAMP (4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine-methiodide) group (0.12 mg x kg(-1), iv). The serum malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were determined. The infarct size areas on the myocardium were identified by TTC staining. The apoptosis in cardiomyocyte was detected by TUNEL assay and apoptosis-related proteins in Bcl-2 and Fas expression were measured by immunohistochemistry assay.
RESULTSM3 receptor agonist choline reduced serum MDA content and increased SOD activity. The myocardial expression of Bcl-2 was increased, whereas the expression of Fas was decreased by choline. However, blockade of M3 receptor by 4DAMP completely inhibited these effects of choline on cardiac myocytes.
CONCLUSIONActivation of M3 receptor has protective effect on myocyte apoptosis induced by acute myocardial infarction in rat, and this effect might be related to modulating the expression of some immediateearly genes including Bcl-2 and Fas.

Objective To evaluate the consistence in the detection of antibodies against HIV-1 between a new rapid test using oral mucosal transudate (OMT) samples and ELISA using serum samples. Methods Two-hundred patients who were positive for anti-HIV-1 antibodies by serum ELISA and confirmed by Western blot to be infected with HIV, and 600 healthy human controls negative for anti-HIV-1 antibodies by serum ELISA, were eligible for this study. OMT samples were collected from these subjects and subjected to a rapid test for anti-HIV-1 antibodies. The factors influencing the performance of the rapid test were analyzed. Results Of the 200 OMT specimens from HIV-infected patients, 198 showed positive reaction, 2 showed negative reaction. Among the 198 positive reactions, 192 (96%) were "clear" and easy to make decisions, 4 (2%) were "faint", 2(1%) were "very faint" and required professionals to make decisions. The rapid test was negative in all the 600 OMT specimens from the control group. Conclusions The consistence in the detection of anti-HIV-1 antibodies between the OMT rapid test and serum ELISA was 99% in HIV-positive specimens, 100% in HIV-negative specimens, and 99.75% in all the specimens.

OBJECTIVETo explore the correlation among prevertebral hyperintensity (PVH), sagittal canal diameter on MRI and neurologic function of patients after cervical vertebral hyperextension injury without fracture and dislocation.
METHODSThe clinical data of 100 patients with cervical vertebral hyperextension injury without fracture and dislocation were retrospectively analyzed from September 2010 to December 2013. The patients were divided into PVH group and non-PVH group according to the presence of PVH on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. There were 39 patients in PVH group, including 31 males and 8 females, aged from 21 to 83 years old with an average of (58.10 ± 14.78) years; and the other 69 patients in non-PVH group, including 49 males and 12 females, aged from 32 to 77 years old with an average of (55.05 ± 10.36) years. The sagittal disc level canal diameters of subaxial cervical spine were measured on mid-sagittal magnetic resonance imaging. The age, sex, cause of injury, and the segments of spinal stenosis were recorded. American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale and motor score were used to evaluate the neurological status.
RESULTSThe ASIA motor score of the group with PVH was 52.56 ± 31.97 while the ASIA motor score was 67.70 ± 22.83 in non-PVH group (P = 0.013). More patients with intramedullary hyperintensity signal on MRI were observed in the PVH group than in non-PVH group (P = 0.006). There was a significant positive correlation between ASIA motor score and sagittal disc level canal diameter of injury segment (P = 0.003). The neurological status was worse in patients with multi-level sagittal canal diameters below 8 mm.
CONCLUSIONThe PVH and the disc-level canal sagittal diameter of the injury segment are associated with neurological status. The patients with multi-level sagittal canal stenosis are vulnerable to severe cervical spinal cord injury.
