The study on the effective core formulae (CEF) not only summarized traditional chinese medicine (TCM) treatment experience, but also helped reveal the underlying knowledge in the formulation of TCM prescriptions. The aim of the present paper was to investigate the method of data mining for the discovery of core effective formulae for lung cancer. In the present study, a prescription fingerprint approach was used to characterize the staged prescription information of patients. The D index was used to screen potential beneficial herbs. Then, based on a herbal compatibility network, the maximal clique searching algorithm (BK algorithm) and survival analysis were applied to discover CEF for lung cancer, and a mining analysis was made for the 322 cases from Longhua hospital. The correlation between prescriptions and survival time was analyzed by prescription fingerprints. Forty-three potentially beneficial herbs were obtained, and two CEFs were significant for the survival time by a parametric survival model based on lognormal distribution, the results were verified by a multivariate survival model. The rules of combination of the two CEFs basically conform to TCM onco-therapeutic theory of strengthening the body resistance and the actual conditions in clinic. All results showed that the established approach was feasible for discovering the core effective formulae for lung cancer and mining survival data for complex TCM onco-therapy.

Objective: Renal fibrosis is the most common manifestation of chronic kidney disease(CKD).Noting that existing treatments of renal fibrosis only slow disease progression but do not cure it,there is an urgent need to identify novel therapies.Hydrogen sulfide(H2S)is a newly discovered endogenous small gas signaling molecule exerting a wide range of biologic actions in our body. This review illustrates recent experimental findings on the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of H2S against renal fibrosis and highlights its potential in future clinical application.Data sources: Literature was collected from PubMed until February 2019,using the search terms including "Hydrogen sulfide,""Chronic kidney disease," "Renal interstitial fibrosis," "Kidney disease," "Inflammation factor," "Oxidative stress," "Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition," "H2S donor,""Hypertensive kidney dysfunction,""Myofibroblasts,""Vascuar remodeling,""transforming growth factor(TGF)-beta/Smads signaling,"and "Sulfate potassium channels."Study selection: Literature was mainly derived from English articles or articles that could be obtained with English abstracts.Article type was not limited.References were also identified from the bibliographies of identified articles and the authors' files. Results: The experimental data confirmed that H2S is widely involved in various renal pathologies by suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress, inhibiting the activation of fibrosis-related cells and their cytokine expression, ameliorating vascular remodeling and high blood pressure, stimulating tubular cell regeneration,as well as reducing apoptosis, autophagy, and hypertrophy.Therefore,H2S represents an alternative or additional therapeutic approach for renal fibrosis. Conclusions: We postulate that H2S may delay the occurrence and progress of renal fibrosis, thus protecting renal function.Further experiments are required to explore the precise role of H2S in renal fibrosis and its application in clinical treatment.

OBJECTIVETo study the effects of glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) on regeneration of facial nerve defects by autogenous facial vein conduit.
METHODSThirty-six rabbits were used in this study and 10 mm-length facial nerve defects were made on both sides of all animals. The nerve gaps were bridged using autogenous posterior facial vein graft of the same side. The animals received injection of either saline (group A, n=16) or GDNF (group B, n=16) into the veins. Nerve function was evaluated by evoking nerve action potential immediately after operation and 4, 8 and 16 weeks after operation. Regenerated nerve samples were harvested at 4, 8, and 16 weeks after operation and processed for histology and transmitting electron microscopic examination (TEM).
RESULTSAction potential did not exist immediately after operation but it was evoked at 4, 8, and 16 weeks in both groups. At 4 and 8 weeks after operation, the amplitude and width of action potential were significantly higher in group B than group A (P < 0.01), except wave width at 4 weeks, which showed no significant differences, while the latency period was significantly shorter in group B than that in group A (P < 0.01). At 16 weeks, action potential was similar between two groups, except wave amptitude, which was higher in group B than group A (P < 0.01). Morphologic and TEM examinations showed more matured myelinated nerve fibers and active Schwann's cells in group B when compared group A during the whole regeneration process.
CONCLUSIONGDNF can promote nerve regeneraat early stage during reconstruction of facial nerve defects by autogenous facial vein conduit and combination of GDNF and autogenous vein graft provides a valuable method for clinical reconstruction of facial nerve defects.

In order to clone and identify differentially expressed genes in the sporogony stage of Eimeria tenella, the cDNAs from unsporulated oocysts and sporulated oocysts of E. tenella were used as driver, respectively, the cDNAs from sporozoites of E. tenella was used tester, Two subtractive cDNA libraries of sporozoites were constructed by using the technique of suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). the cDNAs from unsporulated oocysts was used driver, the cDNAs from sporulated ooceysts was used tester, one subtractive cDNA library of sporulated oocysts was constructed. PCR amplification revealed that the two subtractive cDNA libraries of sporozoites and one subtractive cDNA library of sporulated oocysts contained approximated 96%, 96% and 98% recombinant clones, respectively. Fifty positive clones were sequenced and analyzed in GenBank with Blast search from three subtractive cDNA libraries, respectively, thirteen unique sequences were found from the subtractive cDNA library of sporulated oocysts, eight ESTs shared significant identity with previously described. A total of forty unique sequences were obtained from the two subtractive cDNA libraries, nine ESTs shared significant identity with previously described, the other sequences represent novel genes of E. tenella with no significant homology to the proteins in Genbank. These results have provided the foundation for cloning new genes of E. tenella and further studying new approaches to control coccidiosis.

Background::The eosinophilic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is known to be more sensitive to corticosteroid. The sputum microbiome has been shown to affect COPD prognosis, but its role in acute exacerbations of eosinophilic COPD is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of the airway microbiome in patients with acute exacerbations of eosinophilic COPD.Methods::Fifty-seven patients with acute exacerbations of COPD from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between June 2017 and June 2018 were divided into two groups. Patients with eosinophils ≥300 cells/μL in the peripheral venous blood were assigned to the eosinophilic group (Eos) and the rest to the non-eosinophilic group (Noneos). All patients received similar treatment including inhaled budesonide according to the guidelines. The induced sputum microbiome was analyzed on the 1st and 7th day of treatment using the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) method. The levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 were measured in the plasma and the sensitivity to corticosteroids was determined in isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Quantitative data were compared between the two groups using the independent samples t test or Mann-Whitney U test. Categorical data were evaluated using Chi-squared test or Fisher’s exact test. Results::Twenty-six patients were classified into Eos group and 31 patients were classified into Noneos group. Prior to treatment, the alpha diversity (Shannon index) (2.65 ± 0.63 vs. 2.56 ± 0.54, t = 0.328, P = 0.747) and the structure of the sputum microbiome were similar in the Eos group and the Noneos group. After 7 days of treatment, alpha diversity increased in both groups, while the microbiome richness (Ace index) was significantly lower in the Eos group (561.87 ± 109.13 vs. 767.88 ± 148.48, t = -3.535, P = 0.002). At the same time, IL-6 (12.09 ± 2.85 pg/mL vs. 15.54 ± 2.45 pg/mL, t = -4.913, P < 0.001) and IL-8 (63.64 ± 21.69 pg/mL vs. 78.97 ± 17.13 pg/mL, t = -2.981, P = 0.004) decreased more significantly in the Eos group, and the percentages of inhibition of IL-8 at dexamethasone concentrations 10 -8 to 10 -6 mol/L were significantly higher in the Eos group than those in the Noneos group (all P < 0.05). Conclusions::The induced sputum microbiome richness decreased more significantly following treatment in the Eos patients compared to the Noneos patients. The lower plasma inflammatory factor levels and the higher percentage of inhibition of IL-8 might be due to higher corticosteroid sensitivity in Eos patients.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and safety of the ICE regimen (iphosphamide + carboplatin + etoposide) used in treating children with hepatoblastoma in the Shanghai Children's Medical Center.
METHODSFrom June 2000 to June 2008, 14 children with newly diagnosed hepatoblastoma (7 males and 7 females) were enrolled. Their median age on diagnosis was 1.33 years (range: 0.25-8.25 years). Six patients had stage I disease, 1 had stage II, 5 had stage III, and 2 had stage IV diseases. Thirteen children had markedly increased serum AFP level, and 1 had normal serum AFP level. Multidisciplinary co-operation treatment was performed. Eight patients had primary surgery while 3 patients had pre-operation chemotherapy before surgery. ICE chemotherapy regimen was used. Totally, 73 courses of chemotherapy were administered for the 14 children and 25 out of the 73 courses were performed before operation.
RESULTSTwelve patients responded to the treatment (85.7%) and 2 failed. Ten patients (71.4%) achieved complete remission after treatment, and two had partial remission. By July 31st, 2008, 9 patients survived without any event, with a median follow-up duration of 35 months (range: 16-96 months). The 5-year overall survival rate was 70.71+/-12.37%, and the 5-year event-free survival rate was 64.29+/-12.81%. One patient had disease relapse and two patients were lost to follow-up after they achieved partial remission.
CONCLUSIONSThe ICE regimen combined with operation is effective and safe in treating children with hepatoblastoma.

OBJECTIVETo improve the long-term prognosis of childhood Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) by standard treatment protocol HL-98.
METHODSPatients were divided into low (R(1)), middle (R(2)) and high-risk (R(3)) groups based on staging, tumor size and with or without B symptoms. Patients of R(1), R(2) and R(3) groups were given 4, 6, and 9 courses of chemotherapy, respectively. Low dose radiotherapy to involved area was given to patients with residual disease at the end of chemotherapy. All patients diagnosed between 1998 and Dec. 2008 were enrolled. The software of SPSS 11.0 was used and the event free survival (EFS) was generated by Kaplan-Meier.
RESULTSThere was a total of 26 patients with male 20 and female 6. The average age was 97 (30 to 179) months and median age 94.5 months. Three patients were in stage I, 4 in stage II, 9 in stage III and 10 in stage IV. Of 26 patients, 24 were found with neck tumor, 12 with mediastinum tumor, 11 with spleen infiltration and 5 with B symptom. Four patients were allocated into R(1) group, 12 R(2) group and 10 R(3) group. Eight of 26 with residual disease received radiotherapy, 7 received 20-26 Gy and 1 received 36 Gy. To Jun 2009, 21 (80.76%) of them kept in complete remission (CR) at 10 to 120 months follow-up (average 36 months, and median 31 months). Five cases relapsed (1 of stage III and 4 of stage IV) within 5 to 12 months. Three out of 4 in stage IV with B symptom relapsed. The estimated 5-year overall survival (OS) was 85.9% and EFS was 73.7%.
CONCLUSIONThe estimated 5-year EFS indicated that protocol HL-98 is reasonable good. Patients of stage I and II can obtain a good prognosis without radiotherapy.

Journal of Medical Biomechanics 2019;34(1):E069-E076
Objective To investigate the role of microRNA-214-3p (miR-214-3p) in differentiation and proliferation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) induced by cyclic stretch. Methods EPCs were exposed to cyclic stretch at physiological level (with the magnitude of 5%, at a constant frequency of 1.25 Hz) for 24 h by FX-5000T Strain Unit. miRNAs array was performed to identify the expression profiling of miRNAs. Real-time PCR was used to examine the expression levels of miRs. The expression of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) markers in EPCs was detected by real-time PCR. EPC proliferation was detected by BrdU ELISA assay. After EPCs were transfected with miR-214-3p inhibitor (IN) to knockdown expression of miR-214-3p, the level of VSMC markers expression and EPC proliferation was detected. Results Cyclic stretch significantly decreased miR-214-3p expression, depressed EPC differentiation toward VSMCs, and increased EPCs proliferation. Similarly, transfection with the miR-214-3p inhibitor led to the decreased expression of VSMC markers under static station. Meanwhile, miR-214-3p down-regulation promoted EPC proliferation significantly. Conclusions Physiological cyclic stretch could down-regulate the expression of miR-214-3p in EPCs, depress EPC differentiation towards VSMC and promote EPC proliferation eventually. Therefore, the research findings provide a potential therapeutic strategy for treating vessel injuries.
