Objective To observe and compare the regulating effect between electroacupuncture and sham electroacupuncture on the symptoms of menopausal transition and levels of estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH), for evaluating the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture in mitigating the relevant symptoms of menopausal transition. Method Thirty eligible subjects with menopausal transition were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 15 cases in each group. The treatment group was intervened by electroacupuncture at the ordinary acupoints, while the control group was by electroacupuncture at non-meridian points. The E2, FSH, and LH contents were detected after intervention and at the 20th week during the follow-up study, the flush score and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) were evaluated respectively after 4-week and 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study, and the safety of electroacupuncture was also estimated.Result The flush and MRS scores were significantly changed after 4-week and 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study in both groups compared to that before the treatment in the same group (P<0.01,P<0.05). There was a significant difference in comparing the changes of MRS score after 8-week treatment between the two groups (P<0.01). There were significant differences in comparing the changes of flushing scores between the two groups after 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study (P<0.01). The serum levels of E2, FSH, and LH were significantly changed in the treatment group after 8-week treatment (P<0.05). There were significant differences in comparing the changes of FSH and LH levels between the two groups after 8-week treatment (P<0.05). The difference in comparing the change of serum E2 level between the two groups at the 20th week during the follow-up study was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Electroacupuncture can improve the flushing intensity and produce a benign regulation on the relevant hormone levels in menopausal transition, though this regulation is insignificant when the treatment terminates.

Objective To optimize the prescription ofBaichanting Tablets by the central composite design-response surface methodology. Methods The doses of MCC, cCMC-Na, SiO2, and magnesium stearate were set as investigation factors; disintegration time and moisture rate were set as indexes. Linear equation quadratic polynomial described mathematic relationship of disintegration time and moisture rate with other four influence factors. Response surface was described according to the optimal mathematic models; the optimal prescription was chosen; predictive analysis was conducted.ResultsThe relationship of disintegration time and moisture rate with other four influence factors could not be described by linear equation. When quadratic polynomial matching was used, correlation coefficients were 0.837 9 and 0.923 1, with relatively high reliability. Optimal prescription contained 30.6%MCC, 10%cCMC-Na, 0.30%SiO2, and 0.10% magnesium stearate. The theoretical value and predicted value deviations of the disintegration time limit and moisture absorption rate were within 5%.Conclusion The predictability of the established model is good. Application of central composite design-response surface methodology can precisely optimize the prescription ofBaichanting Tablets.

ObjectiveTo determine the optimal timing of antenatal taurine supplementation to improve neuron and neural stem cell proliferation in fetal rats with intrauterine growth restriction. Methods Twenty-five pregnant SD rats were randomly divided into five groups (five rats in each group): group A was the control group, group B to E were the fetal growth restriction (FGR) model groups with low-protein diet during the experiment, group C, D, and E were supplemented with taurine [300 mg/(kg·d)] at day 9, 11 and 15, respectively. The birth weight of newborn rats was measured after natural delivery. The rats with body weight two standard deviations lower than the average weight in group A were diagnosed as FGR. There were five litters of newborn rats in each group, and two were randomly selected from each litter, resulting in ten newborn rats in each group. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and fatty acid binding protein 7 (FABP7) positive cell expression in newborn rat brain tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. Single factor analysis of variance, LSD tests were used for statistical analysis.ResultsThe average birth weight of newborn rats in group A, B, C, D and E were (6.61±0.45), (4.65±0.23), (5.37±0.17), (5.74±0.21), and (5.00±0.24) g, respectively. Average birth weight was lower in group B than in group A (t=2.447), higher in group D and E than in group B (t=2.306 and 2.306), higher in group D than in group C and E (t=2.306 and 2.306), and the differences were statistically significant (allP<0.05). The positive expression of PCNA in the brain of neonatal rats was mainly located in the nucleus. The number of PCNA positive cells in each high power field (×400) in group A, B, C, D and E was 31.03±5.38, 46.49±4.38, 59.65±5.37, 67.76±5.84, and 53.53±6.94, respectively. The number of PCNA positive cells in group B was higher than that in group A (t=2.110), higher in groups C, D and E than in group B (t=2.110, 2.110 and 2.131), higher in group D than in group C and E (t=2.101 and 2.110), and the differences were all statistically significant (allP<0.05). The positive expression of FABP7 was mainly located in the cytoplasm of neonatal rat brain. The integral optical density (IOD) in group A, B, C, D, and E was 451 733.1± 141 452.3, 207 232.2±60 525.2, 333 766.6±68 412.1, 380 647.4±131 145.9, and 278 967.1±127 630.7, respectively. The IOD in group B was lower than that in group A (t=3.165,P=0.000), higher in groups C, D and E than in group B (t=5.272, 7.132, 2.950), and the differences were statistically significant (allP<0.05). Although the IOD in group D was higher than that in group C, the difference was not significant (t=1.953, P>0.05). The IOD in group D was higher than that in group E, and the difference was statistically significant (t=4.182,P<0.05).ConclusionsAntenatal taurine supplementation can promote neuron and neural stem cell proliferation in rats with FGR. The effect is most obvious on the 11th day of pregnancy, and may lead to the promotion of brain development.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a severe autosomal recessive disease which can cause irreversible damage to patients' neural system and results in severe mental retardation.Although the institution of a lowphenylalanine (Phe) diet has been a remarkable success in preventing the devastating damage associated with untreated PKU,there are always small but consistent gap in intelligence quotient (IQ) scores and executive functioning when compared to siblings or healthy age-related control groups.During the past few years, several types of new treatment strategies, such as genetic engineering, enzyme replacement, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4),large neutral amino acids (LNAA),low-Phe diet and liver or liver cell transplantation therapies, have been studied and improved. This paper aims to introduce the research advances in pathogenesis of PKU,the treatment methods and the related molecular mechanism.

Electrochemiluminescence was used to determine thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies in 140 pregnant women, who were then divided into normal group (n =117) and subclinical hypothyroidism group (n =23) based on the thyroid function. The urine iodine level in the pregnant women was detected by arsenic cerium catalytic spectrophotometric method. The awareness of past history of thyroid disease among the subjects with thyroid dysfunctions were investigated. The results showed that the prevalences of iodine deficiency were 50% and 57% in the normal group and the subclinical hypothyroidism group, respectively. The state of iodine level was not related to thyroid function. The levels of serum thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody were markedly related to serum TSH(P<0.01),so was the level of serum TPOAb related to serum FT4 (P<0.05).Among the subclinical hypothyroidism women,70% did not undergo thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies screening before pregnancy,8.7% denied past history of thyroid disease, and 21.7% suffered from hypothyroidism before pregnancy. Therefore,we advocate the screening of urine iodine and thyroid autoantibodies before or during the first trimester of pregnancy, aiming to correct iodine deficiency, avoid supplementing too much iodine, improve the outcome of perinatal stage, and reduce all the negative effects on the offsprings.
