Chinese Journal of Medical Imaging Technology 2019;35(11):1733-1736
Objective: To analyze the imaging effect of 3D-nerve on brachial plexus in neonates compared with DWI with background body singal suppression (DWIBS), 3D-short T1 inversion recovery (3D-STIR). Methods: A total of 15 neonates with brachial plexus injury were recruited and underwent MR scan with sequences including 3D-nerve, DWBIS, 3D-STIR. Images were evaluated for pulsation artifact, heterogeneous fat saturation, brachial plexus branches, nerve-fat ratio, nerve-muscle ratio. Results: The brachial plexus showed poor results in DWIBS sequence images, which could not be observed. Pulsation artifact and heterogeneous fat saturation had no statistical significance between 3D-nerve and 3D-STIR (both P>0.05). 3D-nerve and 3D-STIR showed 100% (15/15) of the brachial plexus roots and brachial plexus trunks. Brachial plexus bundles, brachial plexus branches were seen in 100% (15/15), 66.67% (10/15) on 3D nerve and 93.33% (14/15), 53.33% (8/15) on 3D-STIR, the differences were not statistically significant (P=1.00, 0.71). 3D-nerve performed better nerve-to-fat ratio and neuro-to-muscle ratio compared with 3D-STIR (both P<0.05). Conclusion: The 3D-nerve performed better for neonatal brachial plexus injury than DWBIS and 3D-STIR.

【Objective】To explore the relationship between the miR- 132 expression in serum and cognitive deficits of OSA. 【Methods】 66 Chinese adults age 30 to 60 years old were enrolled and categorized into two groups based on Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)scores: OSA patients with cognitive impairment(OSAI,n=36),OSA patients without cognitive impairment(OSAN,n=30),and thirty adults without OSA as healthy control group(HC,n=30). Out- of- center cardiopulmonary sleep testing (OCST) and MoCA assessment were performed and the relative expression of miR-132 in serum was detected by PCR.【Results】No significant difference was observed in age, education, gender and hypertension(P>0.05). The relative expression level of miR-132 was significantly up-regulated in OSAI patient′s serum compared to the OSAN and HC patients (P<0.001),and had a positive correlation with MoCA score (r=- 0.726,P<0.001). ROC analyses showed that the areas under the curve(AUC)were statistically significant from the line of identity in OSA with cognitive impairment(AUC=0.935,95% CI:0.890- 0.981,P<0.001)and in OSA(AUC=0.787,95% CI:0.695-0.879,P<0.001).【Conclusions】Elevated serum miR-132 expression levels are closely related to the diagnosis of OSA and its cognitive dysfunction. Detection of serum miR- 132 may be a potential indicator of cognitive dysfunction and diagnosis in OSA patients.

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are mesenchymal stem cells derived from dental pulp tissue with self-renewal, high proliferative capacity and multidirectional differentiation potential. Under appropriate induction conditions, DPSCs can be differentiated into various types of cells, such as osteoblasts, odontoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and neuronal cells. DPSCs have been gradually applied to clinical trials and preclinical studies and are important seed cells in the field of periodontal tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In this paper, the factors affecting the biological characteristics of DPSCs are reviewed together with a review of recent literature published worldwide. The results of the literature review show that the biological characteristics of DPSCs can be influenced by many factors, such as tissue source, culture method, environment and induction conditions, which has guiding significance for research and applications of DPSCs.
4.Research advances in the correlations between periodontal disease and autophagy
Journal of Prevention and Treatment for Stomatological Diseases 2018;26(4):268-272
Periodontal disease is a common and frequently occurring oral disease, with numerous investigations on periodontitis etiology and treatment. The development of periodontal disease is affected by many factors, including local stimulation and systemic risk factors, and dental plaque biofilm is regarded as an initial factor. The molecular mechanisms of how dental plaque biofilm and other risk factors regulate the development of periodontal disease remain unclear. Autophagy is a ubiquitous self-regulating mechanism of eukaryotes and a process of cell self-phagocytosis and digestion. Autophagy is a complex process, involving a variety of cellular and tissue activities, including cellular stress, clearance of endogenous and exogenous cellular components, development, aging and cancer. Recent studies have shown that autophagy is closely related to inflammation. This paper addresses recent research advances in understanding the correlations between periodontal disease and autophagy to provide a reference in the study of new methods to treat periodontal disease from the perspective of autophagy in the future.

AIM: To compare and observe the accuracy of five intraocular lens(IOL)power calculation formulas in patients with cataracts who have previously undergone corneal refractive surgery.METHODS: Prospective case series study. A total of 23 cataract patients(34 eyes)with a history of myopic corneal refractive surgery at Jinan Mingshui Eye Hospital from September 2021 to March 2023 were collected, including 1 eye treated with photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)and 22 patients(33 eyes)treated with laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis(LASIK). Preoperative ocular biometry was performed using the IOL Master 700, while corneal true net refractive power(TNP)was measured via Pentacam analyzer. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography(OCT)was used to assesse net corneal power(NCP), posterior corneal refractive power, and central corneal thickness(CCT). The Shammas, Haigis-L, Potvin-Hill Pentacam, OCT, and Barrett True K formulas were utilized for IOL power calculations, with the optimal power selected accordingly. At 1 mo postoperatively, actual refractive outcomes were determined through subjective refraction, based on objective optometry results. The refractive prediction error(RPE)and refractive absolute error(RAE)of each formula were calculated and compared, and the percentage of eyes with RAE ≤0.5 D and ≤1.0 D was counted.RESULTS: No significant statistical difference was found in the RPE of the five formulas when compared to zero(all P>0.05), nor were there significant differences in RPE and RAE among the formulas(F=0.554, P=0.696; H=4.402, P=0.354). The RAE was within ≤0.5 D for 26 eyes(76%)using the Potvin-Hill Pentacam formula and for 24 eyes(71%)using the Barrett True K formula, with both formulas achieving an RAE within ≤1.0D in 33 eyes(97%).CONCLUSIONS: The Barrett True K and Potvin-Hill Pentacam formulas demonstrated high predictive accuracy for IOL power calculations in post-corneal refractive surgery cataract patients. Given the variability in corneal refractive power among these patients, further research on IOL power calculation is warranted. Clinically, it is advisable to consider a range of formulas for optimal outcomes.

International Eye Science 2023;23(5):787-790
Herpes simplex keratitis(HSK), caused by the infection of herpes simplex virus type Ⅰ(HSV-1)in cornea, is a global blinding corneal disease. After the primary infection in ocular surface, HSV-1 is transported into trigeminal ganglion and establishes the life-lasting latency, and it results in recurrent keratopathy. In the process of studying the latent mechanism of HSV, it has been gradually recognized that both the virus itself and the host response regulate the latent process of HSV. In recent years, a large number of research results have been obtained on the molecular mechanisms of invasion, immunity, latency and recurrence of neurotropic viruses, which provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of HSK. In the present review, the recent progress of HSV latency mechanism in trigeminal ganglion after the primary infection in corneal surface was introduced, and the unsolved basic and clinical problems in HSK were discussed.

AIM: To explore the imaging features of 49 patients with posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy(PPCD)by in vivo confocal microscopy(IVCM).METHODS: Retrospective case series study. A total of 49 patients(86 eyes), including 32 males and 17 females diagnosed with PPCD between January 2013 and January 2021 were collected. The mean age was 42.5±22.9 years. All patients were scanned by IVCM to analyze the density of corneal endothelial cells and described IVCM characteristics of different types of PPCD.RESULTS: The number of endothelial cells in the lesion area of all patients was lower than that in the peripheral area. Under IVCM, 44 eyes(51%)were categorized into type 1 PPCD(vesicular lesions), characterized by single or multiple, central round or irregular crater-like lesion on paracentral corneal endothelial layer; 16 eyes(19%)were categorized into type 2 PPCD(band lesions), which displayed curved and raised edge with scattered or banded-distributed gutta-like lesion between edges. Type 3 PPCD(diffuse lesion)were in 26 eyes(30%), which showed that endothelial cells were missing in many areas. The blurred images of endothelium in most areas featured with spikes lined in a streak, and the clear images in some areas featured with a band lesions. Two patients were followed up for 4-5a. The IVCM images showed different lesions, including the decrease of central corneal endothelial cell density and the iron deposit in the corneal epithelium, etc.CONCLUSION: IVCM is able to scan the characteristic microstructural alterations at the level of endothelium and Descemet membrane in patients with PPCD, and provide an effective image diagnosis for PPCD.
