Annals of Clinical Microbiology 2014;17(4):105-109
BACKGROUND: The pre-storage condition of blood culture bottles prior to entering the automated blood culture system may affect the time to detection (TTD) of microorganisms and the final report days. METHODS: We compared the TTD and final report days according to the pre-incubation conditions after laboratory operating hours: room temperature (RT) vs. a BacT/Alert unit (BioMerieux Inc.) for 3 months respectively. All bottles were inserted into the main BacT/Alert system the next morning. RESULTS: TTD was significantly reduced by pre-incubating bottles in a BacT/Alert unit (median, 8.4 h) compared to pre-storage at RT (median, 12.4 h) (P< 0.001). The final report of bacterial identification and drug susceptibility within 2 days was available for 24.4% of bottles pre-incubated in a BacT/Alert unit compared to 14.9% of those incubated at RT. The false positive results were significantly higher for pre-incubation in a BacT/Alert unit (0.81%) than for that (0.29%) at RT (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: If a clinical microbiology laboratory is not operational for 24 hours, an automated blood culture unit might be a good alternative to reduce TTD and allow the submission of a faster final report compared to pre-storage at RT. However, false positive readings increased more than two-fold by pre-incubation in a BacT/Alert unit.

3.Intraoperative consultation for ovarian tumors
Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 2019;36(3):163-182
The primary function of intraoperative frozen consultation is to provide an as accurate and prompt diagnosis as possible during surgery and to guide the surgeon in further management. However, the evaluation of frozen section (FS) is sometimes difficult because of suboptimal tissue quality and frozen artifacts compared with routinely processed tissue section. The pathologist responsible for the FS diagnosis requires experience and good judgment. Ovarian tumors are a heterogeneous group of tumors including primary surface epithelial tumors, germ cell tumors and sex cord-stromal tumors, secondary tumors, and other groups of tumors of uncertain histogenesis or nonspecific stroma. Intraoperative FS is a very important and reliable tool that guides the surgical management of ovarian tumors. In this review, the diagnostic key points for the pathologist and the implication of the FS diagnosis on the operator’s decisions are discussed.

5.Experiences of School Health Teachers in Special Schools for Students with Disabilities
Korean Journal of Occupational Health Nursing 2023;32(3):111-120
Purpose:
The gradual increase in the number of children with disabilities in Korea highlights the necessity for further research on the role of school health teachers in their care. This study explored the specific experiences of school health teachers in special schools through individual in-depth interviews.
Methods:
In this study, 11 school health teachers participated, and data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the collected data.
Results:
The experiences of health teachers at special schools were classified into 5 themes and 13 subthemes. These included "concerns about working in special schools and attachment after working," "management of diverse diseases and ongoing, careful observation," "ambivalence regarding students with disabilities," "competences needed to care for students with disabilities," and "enhancing care education for students with disabilities: demanding institutional support."
Conclusion
Effective student health management depends on open communication channels and the establishment of strong connections among health teachers, school personnel, and parents of impaired students. To enhance the quality of care for children with disabilities, specialized education programs to improve teachers' healthcare competency should be developed. Additionally, specific guidelines for the range of medical treatments provided by health instructors, should be devised.
6.Evaluation of Practice Education Using Checklists in Fundamentals of Nursing: Focused on measuring blood pressure on the upper arm and sterilized gloving(open method).
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2005;12(3):298-306
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine satisfaction and dissatisfaction factors with the method of testing practice in Fundamentals of Nursing with the students using checklists. METHOD: Subjects were 251 students doing three month practice. Checklists by K Publishing were used to assess skill in measuring blood pressure and sterilized. Measure for satisfaction and dissatisfaction factors were developed by researcher through a literature review. Collected data were processed using SAS. RESULTS: 1. Average score for satisfaction was 3.49+/-0.68 for theoretical subjects of basic nursing, 3.44+/-0.72 for practical subjects and 3.29+/-0.74 for practice. Average score for interest was 3.71+/-0.73. 2. Average score for general satisfaction was 3.52+/-0.56, and the satisfaction factor with the highest score was "It was helpful in improving practical skills after the test"(average 3.78+/-0.78). Average score for general dissatisfaction was 3.13+/-0.59, and dissatisfaction factor with the highest score was "As I did not think deeply, I don't know exactly what mistakes I made"(average 3.41+/-0.94). 3. Students who wanted to study further in the future appeared to be satisfied with practical tests using checklists(F=2.04, p=.038), and students appeared to be dissatisfied with them when they didn't have enough time for practice(F=3.38, p=.010). CONCLUSION: Students' satisfaction was relatively high, particularly as the tests were seen as helpful in improving practical skills after tests.

7.Clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and antimicrobial resistance of group A streptococci infections
Annals of Clinical Microbiology 2023;26(4):89-97
Group A streptococci (GAS) cause diverse diseases ranging from mild to severe illnesses, and the global burden of GAS infections is enormous. Serological typing has been replaced by emm genotyping for the epidemiological study of GAS. Acute bacterial pharyngitis is a common illness, which requires either throat culture or rapid Ag test for diagnosis. Moreover, molecular point-of-care tests have been introduced owing to their higher sensitivity. Optimal diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis is necessary for the adequate use of antibiotics. Although antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to erythromycin or clindamycin does not seem serious in Korea, it is very high in China, being reported at over 90%. Antibiotic surveillance and relevant education are necessary for primary clinical physicians and pediatricians. It is necessary to monitor AMR and develop a system for reporting the appearance of highly virulent diseases, such as necrotizing fasciitis or streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome, to the government authority.

Journal of Korean Biological Nursing Science 2020;22(2):139-147
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different intensity of aerobic exercise for four weeks on cardiovascular risk factors, reactive oxygen, and antioxidant enzymes in old mice.
Methods:
Eighteen male C57BL/6 mice age 18 months were randomly classified into the control group (n=6), the moderate intensity exercise group (n=6), and the low intensity exercise group (n=6). The training groups performed the aerobic exercise twice daily for 20 minutes, five days weekly for four weeks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Chi-square test, and the Tukey’s test with the SPSSWIN 21.0 program.
Results:
In this study, among the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, blood sugar (BS) (p=.023) and total cholesterol (TC) (p=.001) were significantly different between the moderate intensity exercise group and the control group. Additionally, there were significant differences in the reactive oxygen malondialdehyde (MDA) (p=.001), the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p<.001) and glutathione reductase (GR) (p=.015) between the moderate intensity exercise group and the control group.
Conclusion
This finding suggests that moderate intensity aerobic exercise promotes the activity of antioxidant enzymes and lowers cardiovascular risk factors in older mice.
