BACKGROUND: The clinical features and classification of various anomalous synkinetic movements related to ocular muscles caused by abnormal innervations have not been fully understood.OBJECTIVE: To report and analyze the clinical features of anomalous synkinetic movements related to ocular muscles caused by abnormal innervations, as well as to classify them according to the same neuromuscular nerves.DESIGN: A retrospective case analysis.SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, the Affiliated Hospital of the Medical College of Qingdao University.PARTICIPANTS: The study was mainly conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, the Affiliated Hospital of the Medical College of Qingdao University. A total of 836 cases of abnormal ocular movements were found from January 1997 to January 2002. Among them 67 cases of anomalous synkinetic movements were diagnosed.METHODS: All patients were inquired of case history and their ocular movements were examined. The anomalous synkinetic movements were found and classified into congenital and acquired. All cases were analyzed according to the same neuromuscular nerves, such as between branches of oculomotor nerve, oculomotor and abducens nerve, supranucleus and other anomalous synkinetic movements.lous synkinetic movements were determined by inquiring the history of observed.RESULTS: Sixty-seven anomalous synkinetic movements (8%) of 836 abnormal ocular movements were diagnosed; congenital anomalous synkinetic movements were the most common ones (88.06%) and were often seen in patients with Duane's syndrome. Anomalous synkinetic muscles occurred the most common between lateral and medial rectus, lateral rectus and levator palpebrae muscle (36.89% respectively) in congenital cases, and those occurred between inferior rectus and levator palpebrae muscle more commonly (30%) in acquired cases.CONCLUSION: Anomalous synkinetic movements related to ocular muscles are not infrequently seen. When we find paradoxical movements between ocular muscles, or between ocular muscles and other unrelated muscles, anomalous synkinetic movements should be considered.

The natural history of 383 patients of schistosomal cirrhosis, discovered from 1960-1990 in Donjing township Shanghai suburb, where schistosomiasis had been controlled for more than 10 years, was studied. The cumulative survival rate in 243 patients who had splenecto-my 11-30 years previously (group I ) was much higher than that of 140 patients without splenectomy (group II ), and the time for 75% survival rate of these 2 groups were 18 and 4 years respectively, being much longer in the splenectomized patients without ascites and those operated before age of 30 than those complicated with ascites and those operated between the age of 31 - 50 or after 51 years of age.The complications and mortality rate of group I were significantly lower than that of group I , indicating that splenectomy not only prevented the complication of portal hypertension but improved the general health and resistance of the patients against other pathogens as well.There was no significant difference between group I and group II in the ratio of the avarage death age of the deceased patients to the life expectancy of the general population, suggesting that the life span of a number of patients without splenectomy are not substantially shortened in an area where schistosomiasis had been controlled.

The levels of triglyceride(TG)and free fatty acid(FFA)in serum,liver,skeletal muscle,and pancreas of lipoprotein lipase gene knockout heterozygous(LPL+/-)mice and C57 mice were determined.Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test(IPGTT)was performed to evaluate insulin sensitivity and β-cell function.The results showed that the Iipid content in 16 weeks LPL+/- group did not increase significantly.The TG and FFA contents in 28 weeks LPL+/- group were significantly higher than those in control and 16 weeks LPL+/-group(all P<0.05).In 50 weeks LPL+/- group,FFA levels in serum and pancreas,and TG content in pancreas increased significantly compared with other three groups(all P<0.05).The IPGTT result showed that the blood glucose levels increased from 15 to 120 min,not at 0 and 5 min.The blood glucose levels during 30-120 min increased significantly in 50 weeks LPL+/- group compared with other three groups(P<0.05).Fasting insulin(FINS),homoestasis assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR)and pancreatic β cell function also increased gradually with age.FINS and HOMA-IR in 28 weeks LPL+/- group were higher than those in control and 16 weeks LPL+/- group.These results suggest that LPL is a key enzyme in lipid metabolism and plays a crucial role in the development of insulin resistance and diabetes.

The study was aimed to examine the prevalence of depression in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and identify its features. A total of 131 out-patients, diagnosed as having idiopathic PD in accordance with the United Kingdom Parkinson's Disease Society Brain Bank criteria, were interviewed with questionnaire and evaluated by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hohen &Yahr staging (H&Y staging) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD). Patients were divided into three groups in terms of HRSD score: depression group, sub-threshold depression group and non-depression group. The clinical variables and symptom profiles were obtained and compared among the three groups. The results showed that 27 patients (20.6%) fell into the depression group, 71 (54.2%) into the sub-threshold depression group, and 33 (25.2%) into the non-depression group. There were no differences in age, gender or tremor score among the groups (P>0.05). Significant differences were found in duration of PD, UPDRS score, rigidity score and H&Y stage between the sub-threshold depression group (or the depression group) and the non-depression group (P<0.05). Moreover, the clinical variables in the subthreshold depression group had the trend of increasing with the severity of PD and their values were similar to those in the depression group. Anhedonia, feeling of incapability, sleep disturbance, gastrointestinal symptoms and depressive moods were most common in the depression group. And these symptoms also were more common in the other two groups. It is concluded that depression and sub-threshold depression are common in PD and share similar clinical features. Furthermore, subthreshold depression might be the prodrome of depression and may develop into depression as the condition progresses.

【Objective】 To establish a new method for the determination of fibrinogen content in cryoprecipitated antihemophilic factor. 【Methods】 Fibrinogen (Fib) could bind with sheep anti-human fibrinogen (anti-Fib) specifically and further form antigen-antibody complex. When the Fib was present in the solution, the fluorescence of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled on the anti-Fib (FITC-anti-Fib) was quenched due to the formation of immune complex. The fluorescence quenching degree of FITC-anti-Fib was positively correlated with Fib concentration (cFib) in a certain concentration range. 【Results】 The linear relationship between fluorescence quenching degree [(I0-I)/I0] of FITC-anti-Fib and ln(cFib) was (I0-I)/I0=15.53ln(cFib)+ 80.79 (R²=0.99) when the cFib was in the range of (0.007 8-0.560 0) g/L. The recovery of Fib was (96.77-102.43) %. When the method was applied to determine Fib at high, medium, and low concentrations, the obtained intra-day variation coefficients were 0.31%, 0.56%, and 0.49%, respectively, and the inter-day variation coefficients were 3.81%, 3.06%, and 4.13%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the results measured by fluorescence quenching method and coagulation method (t=-0.075, P>0.05). 【Conclusion】 In this work, a new fluorescence method for the determination of Fib in cryoprecipitated antihemophilic factor was successfully established based on the specific combination of fib and FITC-anti-Fib. The method is simple and rapid. The obtained results were accurate and reliable by using this method to determine Fib.

【Objective】 To determine the volume range of suspended erythrocyte and establish its internal control standard. 【Methods】 The theoretical value of suspended erythrocyte volume was calculated according to the screening criteria of healthy blood donors and Quality Requirements for Whole Blood and Blood Components. A total of 2 410 bags of 1 U and 2 U suspended erythrocyte were randomly selected and weighed, and the volume range were formulated by ±2S and ±10% respectively and then compared to determine the volume range in line with the actual situation of our center. 【Results】 The theoretical volume range of 1 U and 2 U suspended erythrocyte were 117-160 mL vs 234-320 mL, and the actual volume range were 142-180 mL vs 276-393 mL. The volume range of 1 U and 2 U suspended erythrocyte formulated by ±2S were 145-181 mL vs 298-358 mL, and by ±10% were 147-179 mL vs 295-361 mL. The hematocrit and hemoglobin content of suspended erythrocyte within the actual volume range met the quality requirements. There were fluctuations in the volume of suspended erythrocyte from different regions. 【Conclusion】 Based on the actual situation of our center and the sampling results of suspended erythrocytes in recent two years, 163 mL±10% and 328 mL±10% were determined as the internal control standards of 1 U and 2 U suspended erythrocyte, respectively. Blood centers should establish accurate and feasible standard of suspended erythrocyte according to the actual situation.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the impact of ethanol extracts from Sedum sarmentosum (ESB) on STAT-3 signaling and its probable molecular mechanism in inducing apoptosis.

METHODMTT assay was used to detect the impact of ESB on HepG2 cell proliferation. FITC-Annexin V-FITC /PI double-labeling were used to investigate the impact on hepatoma carcinoma cell apoptosis. Western blot analysis was used to test the expression levels of cell apoptosis-related proteins Caspase-3, Caspase-9, PARP, P-STAT-3 (Tyr705) , STAT-3, Bcl-2, Mcl-1.

RESULTESB could notably inhibit proliferation of HepG2 cells, and induce HepG2 cell apoptosis, with the dose-dependent inhibitory effect. In addition, ESB could inhibit STAT-3 signaling, down-regulate Mcl-1 and Bcl-2 expressions, and induce degradation/activation of apoptosis-related proteins Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 and PARP degradation in a dose-dependent manner.

CONCLUSIONESB inhibits HepG2 cell proliferation and induces apoptosis by inhibiting STAT-3 signaling and Mcl-1 and Bcl-2 expressions.

OBJECTIVE To detect the expression of the Glucocorticoid receptor-?(GR-?)mRNA in nasal polyp and normal nasal mucosa and investigate the route of nasal drug administration in patients of nasal polyp. METHODS The expression of GR-?mRNA in 101 samples of nasal polyps and 31samples of normal nasal mucosa was examined by using Fluorescent quantitative PCR .RESULTS The level of GR-?mRNA in normal nasal mucosa(135.4? 5.25)?104 copy /?g were significantly higher than that in nasal polyps(23.5?12.1)?104 copy/?g . CONCLUSION Because of the low expression of GR-?mRNA in nasal polyps,the route of nasal drug administration in patients with nasal polyps may be in the part of normal mucosa,not in the mucosa of nasal polyps of the nasal cavity.

1.6 kb ?4-desaturase gene(FAD4)was amplified by PCR using plasmid pGEM-TFAD4 as template.The fragment was subcloned into the HindⅢ/XbaⅠrestriction site of pYES2.0 vector.Recombinant plasmid pYFAD4 was transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain INVScl for expression.It was found to exhibit ?4-fatty acid desaturase activity in the recombinant S.cerevisiae YFAD4 in the presence of exogenous fatty acid substrate docosapentaenoic acid(100?mol/L)under introduction of GAL1.Expression of the FAD4 under appropriate media and temperature conditions led to the production of DHA and it reached 41.13% of the total yeast fatty acid by GC detection.It was suggested that the protein encoded by FAD4 could specifically catalyze DPA into DHA.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy and safety of low dose mitomycin C (MMC) to prevent haze in trans photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) with moderate and high myopia, and to observe the changes of corneal density.METHODS: Sixty-one patients underwent TransPRK with moderate and high myopia.Eyes were divided into research group (0.1g/L MMC for 40s) and control group(0.2g/L MMC for 40s) randomly.There were 21 patients in research group and 40 patients in control group.Cornea epithelial healing time, pain score, visual acuity, manifest refraction, haze and cornea density were analyzed.RESULTS: The epithelial healing time (0.1g/L group: 3.86±1.11d, 0.2g/L group: 4.23±1.27d) and pain score (0.1g/L group: 2.01±0.58, 0.2g/L group: 1.79±0.7) were no significant difference between two groups(P=0.667, P=0.582).It was similar in spherical equivalent at 1mo and 3mo post-operation(0.1g/L group: 0.28±0.25, 0.05±0.23D;0.2g/L group:-0.13±0.17, 0.07±0.22D;P=0.178, P=0.490).The BCVA of control group decreased at 1mo and improved to the same level as pre-operation at 3mo(F=15.847, P<0.001);0.1g/L group showed the same trend, but the changes were no significant difference(F=3.038, P=0.093).There were also no significant difference in Haze between two groups post-operation(z=-0.709, P=0.479;z=-0.478, P=0.633).The change of cornea density was matched with the BCVA (0.1g/L group F=27.399, P=0.001;0.2g/L group F=8.313, P=0.001)and it was similar between two groups.CONCLUSION: The using of low dose MMC to prevent haze in TransPRK with moderate and high myopia is safe and effective.It is therapeutic equivalence to regular dose (0.2g/L).Besides the slit lamp, we can use the corneal density to measure the corneal transparency.
