Objective To investigate the influential factors for refracture of the adjacent vertebral body following percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) treatment of patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs).Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on OVCFs patients undergone mono-segmental PVP from July 2007 to March 2010.Patients' age, gender, bone density, bone cement infusion dosage, bone cement leakage and pre-and post-operative fracture reduction were documented.Kaplan-Meier remaining rate curve was used to predict the trend of time to refracture. The related factors for adjacent vertebral body refracture following PVP were analyzed. Results In all,216 patients (98 males and 118 females; age range of 55-76 years, average 65.4 years) were enrolled in this study.Follow-up lasted for 12-18 months.Ninety-two patients sustained refracture including 68 patients with refracture of the adjacent vertebral body.Refracture of the adjacent vertebral body presented time-concentrated tendency and 66% (45/68) occurred within 100 days followed by a notably lower incidence.Whereas the time to refracture of the non-adjacent vertebral body was not obviously centralized.Bone cement infusion dosage and vertebral body reset condition were strongly associated with the refracture incidence of the adjacent vertebral body, while opposite results were observed in regard of age, gender, bone density and bone cement leakage (or not). Conclusion PVP predisposes OVCFs patients to refracture of the adjacent vertebral body and its influential factors may be associated with bone cement infusion dosage and vertebral body reduction condition.

Objective To evaluate the clinical effects of ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein catheterization in long axis plane, short axis plane and oblique axis plane,in order to identify the opti-mal axis plane for this procedure. Methods One hundred and eighty patients (male 94 cases, female 86 cases, aged 34-82 years)requiring ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein catheterization were in-cluded in this study. They were randomly divided into three groups (n =60 each),long axis group, short axis group and oblique axis group, with 60 cases in each group. The details of catheterization in-cluding the time accessing into vein, the time finishing cannulation, needle redirecting times, number of skin points of puncture, puncture successful rate and complications in the three groups were recor-ded.Results Compared with long axis plane and short axis plane, the oblique axis plane was associat-ed with decreased time for venous access and cannulation. The oblique axis plane also needed less changes of needle direction. The complication of arterial puncture in the oblique axis plane group was significantly lower than long axis plane group and short axis plane group(P <0.05).The number of skin puncture points were similar between the three groups. Conclusion The oblique plane can provide a safe and more effective route to perform the IJV catheterization with minimal risk for carotid artery puncture, which demonstrates the practical superiority over the classic short axis plane and long axis plane for critically ill patients.

Objective To isolate and culture sweat gland epithelial cells in vitro, and to study the effects of acetylcholine (ACh) on intracellular flee calcium concentration ([Ca~(2+)]i) of cultured sweat gland epithelial cells. Methods Sweat glands epithelial cells were collected by enzymatic digestion. After ACh was added to the primary and first passage cells,[Ca~(2+)]i was examined using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and the Ca~(2+) sensitive dye Fura 3/AM.Results The primary and first passage epithe- lial cells grew well. After ACh was added, opening of the calcium channel and significant [Ca~(2+)]i increase were observed when the primary and first passage cells were incubated with high concentration of calcium (2 mmol/L);no significant [Ca~(2+)]i increase was observed in those cultured without calcium. Conclusion Upon stimulation with ACh,calcium channels of cultured primary and first passage sweat gland epithelial cells would open, influx of extracellular Ca~(2+) occurred, which resulted in an increase of [Ca~(2+)]i.Extracellular bound calcium was therefore converted into intracellular free calcium.

Objective To investigate the antidiabetic effect of Acanthopanax senticosus extracts based on metabonomics by UPLC-MS/MS and to explore its mechanisms. Methods The type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)mouse model was established by inject-ing streptozocin(streptozotocin,STZ)in combination with alloxan. The effect of A. senticosus extracts on the fasting blood glucose of mice was observed. Multivariate statistical analysis was employed to analyze serum metabolites. The differential metabolites were iden-tified by online and self-built databases. MetPA Was employed to analyze the corresponding metabolic pathways. Results The T2DM model was established successfully. Compared with the model group, the fasting blood glucose of mice in the A. senticosus extracts groups decreased significantly. Compared with the normal control group, the level of phenylalanine,LysoPC(16:0,18:0),tyrosine, serine, urea andβ-hydroxybutyric acid inecreased, while the level of alanine, glutamine, leucine, valine and lactic acid decreased significantly in the model group. Pathway enrichment displayed that these metabolites were mainly involved in five metabolic pathways. The above-mentioned metabolites reversed to the normal level in varying degrees after administration of A. senticosus glycosides or poly-saccharoses extracts. Conclusion The extracts of A. senticosus display a significant hypoglycemic effect which might be achieved by regulation of amino acid, energy and lipid metabolism.
