1.Expressions of TFF1 and TFF3 in prostate cancer and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and their clinical significance.

OBJECTIVETo explore the expressions of trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) and trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) in prostate cancer (PCa) and prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) and their clinical significance.
METHODSUsing immunohistochemistry, we detected the expressions of TFF1 and TFF3 in the prostatic tissues of 89 cases of PCa, 50 cases of PIN, and 65 cases of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and evaluated their clinical significance.
RESULTSThe positive rates of TFF1 and TFF3 expressions were 77. 53% and 48. 31% in PCa and 66.00% and 30.00% in PIN, significantly higher than 49.23% and 13. 85% in BPH (P <0. 05). The expression of TFF1 was not correlated with Gleason score (P >0. 05), while that of TFF3 was significantly higher in the PCa cases with Gleason score ≤7 than in those with Gleason score > 7 (70. 00% vs 42. 03%, P <0. 05). No significant correlation was observed between TFF1 and TFF3 expressions in PCa (P >0. 05).
CONCLUSIONThe expressions of TFF1 and TFF3 may contribute to the occurrence and progression of PCa, and therefore could be used as laboratory indexes in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and prognosis of PCa.

2.Introduction to clinical studies of acupuncture and moxibustion of Britain Foundation of TCM.

In Western countries, more and more people select acupuncture and moxibustion as medical ways, and more and more acupuncture and moxibustion research organizations are set up. Britain TCM foundation is such one center for acupuncture research. This center is aimed at promoting acupuncture research. Since 1991, a series of clinical trials and several big research tasks have been completed. The clinical designs in the center are very careful and scientific, being worth to be learnt. In the paper, clinical studies in the center are introduced for increasing levels of acupuncture and moxibustion research at home.

Objective Aortic arch obstruction is a commonly associated malformation in the patients with Taussig-Bing anoma- ly.Herein,we reported our outcomes of single stage corrections in patients with the Taussig-Bing anomaly associated with aortic arch obstruction.Methods Between May,2000 and Dec,2006,12 patients with Taussig-Bing anomaly associated with aortic arch obstr- uction (5 patients associated with interrupted aortic arch) underwent arterial switch operation with baffling of the left ventricle to neo- aorta.The corrections of aortic arch obstruction included extended resection combined with end to end anastomosis to aortic arch or end to side anastomosis to ascending aorta.Results The hospital mortality rate was 25% (3/12).The ventilating time and ICU stay were (7.4?2.1) days and (11.7?4.6) days,respectively.No reoperation because of residual anomalies was required.Conclusion Tanssig-Bing anomaly,especially associated with aortic arch obstruction,is different from transposition of great artery.The opti- mized operative indications,techniques and the managements of aortic arch obstruction are discussed in the article.

6.Clinical analysis of a Chinese child with leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1.

OBJECTIVELeukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD-I) is rare. We present 1 case of LAD-I patient diagnosed by gene analysis. His clinical manifestations and genetic mutation features are analyzed in this article.
METHODThe clinical material of the LAD-I patient who was diagnosed by gene analysis was retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTThe patient was a 2-month-old boy. He had a complaint of recurrent fever and cough for 30 days. Pulmonary CT indicated a small to moderate quantity pleural effusion on the right side. His peripheral blood leukocyte and C-reactive protein (CRP) was always significantly higher than normal. After hospitalization he had diarrheal diseases, routine stool test showed 2 RBC cells/high power (HP), WBC 30 cells/HP, stool cultures were negative, digestive tract ultrasonography showed an array of defects, in the sigmoid colon and rectal mucosa suggestive of ulcerative colitis. He was treated with cefoperazone and sulbactam and vancomycin. He had a history of impetigo in his neonatal period and without delayed umbilical cord exfoliation. His family history was normal. ITGB2 genetic mutation analysis revealed a homozygous mutation (1062A > T). His parents did not participate in this study. He had no fever but had diarrheal disease after 1 month of follow up.
CONCLUSIONThis patient had suffered from impetigo, pleural effusion, diarrheal diseases, markedly increased peripheral white blood cell and ITGB2 genetic mutation analysis showed that homozygous mutation (1062A > T). He received a diagnosis of LAD-I.

8.Evaluation of clinical therapeutic effects and safety of acupuncture treatment for premenstrual syndrome.

OBJECTIVETo assess the effectiveness and safety of various types of acupuncture in treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
METHODSSearch Chinese and English databases of the Cochrane Library, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CBM, CNKI and reference lists of correlative academic conference proceedings.
RESULTSEight controlled studies involving 807 women (range, 61-225) meeting the enrolled criteria. Among them 7 studies showed that therapeutic effects of acupuncture were superior to other methods (i. e. Western medicine or Chinese herbs).
CONCLUSIONAcupuncture can effectively treat PMS. However, more randomized controlled trials are needed to assess the effectiveness and adverse-effect of acupuncture for treatment of PMS.

9.The relationship between hepatic expression, serum level of TGFbeta1 and the hepatic fibrosis in patients with viral hepatitis.

OBJECTIVETo detect the hepatic tissue and serum level of TGFbeta1 in patients with viral hepatitis, in order to clarify their relationship of the starting, developing of hepatic fibrosis.
METHODSThis study included 92 patients with viral hepatitis. Liver puncture was performed in 31 patients. Hepatic collagen staining (Masson's three colors) and TGFbeta1 immunohistochemistry staining of the liver tissue specimens were performed, morphometric quantitative measurements of hepatic histological collagen and TGFbeta1 were made. The serum level of TGFFbeta1 was detected by ELISA.
RESULTSThe surface density of hepatic TGFbeta1 increased linearly with the elevation of fibrosis stage (P < 0.05), there were no significant differences between every two groups of G1, G2, G3 and G4 (P > 0.005). There was a closely positive correlation between the levels of TGFbeta1 in hepatic tissue and serum, the coefficient was 0.896 (P < 0.01). The levels of TGFbeta1 in tissue and serum both had positive correlation with hepatic collagen, coefficients were 0.863 and 0.667 (P < 0.001). The level of TGFbeta1 in tissue and serum both had positive correlation with serum levels of PCIII, HA, LN, CIV (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONSThere was a closely relationship between the levels of TGFbeta1 in hepatic tissue and serum and liver fibrosis. The detection of TGFbeta1 in liver and serum are more sensitive than HA, LN, CIV in early period of hepatic fibrosis.

10.Radiation-induced bystander effect in immune response.

OBJECTIVESince most reports on bystander effect have been only concerned with radiation-induced damage, the present paper aimed at disclosing whether low dose radiation could induce a stimulatory or beneficial bystander effect.
METHODSA co-culture system containing irradiated antigen presenting cells (J774A.1) and unirradiated T lymphocytes (EL-4) was established to observe the effect of J774A.1 cells exposed to both low and high doses of X-rays on the unirradiated EL-4 cells. Incorporation of 3H-TdR was used to assess the proliferation of the EL-4 cells, expression of CD80/86 and CD48 on J774A.1 cells was measured with immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry, respectively. NO release from J774A.1 cells was estimated with nitrate reduction method.
RESULTSLow dose-irradiated J774A.1 cells could stimulate the proliferation of the unirradiated EL-4 cells while the high dose-irradiated J774A.1 cells exerted an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of the unirradiated EL-4 cells. Preliminary mechanistic studies illustrated that the differential changes in CD48 expression and NO production by the irradiated J774A.1 cells after high and low dose radiation might be important factors underlying the differential bystander effect elicited by different doses of radiation.
CONCLUSIONStimulatory bystander effect can be induced in immune cells by low dose radiation.
