Objective To evaluate the function of peripheral vessels, the change of ankle-brachial Index (ABI) and toe-brachial Index (TBI), and its related risk factors in elderly type 2 diabetic patients were observed. Methods Doppler frequency spectrum was used on lower limb of 128 type 2 diabetic patients and 103 non-diabetic people. ABI and TBI were calculated, other indexes including body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), hypersensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipopretein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), fasting blood glucose(FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PPBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlC) were measured. Results ABI and TBI were decreased in T2DM group as compared with control group (P<0.05), and hs-CRP was increased in T2DM group. With multiple stepwise regression, it showed that ABI and TBI was negatively related with age, SBP and T2DM duration, while ABI was positively correlated with HDL. In multiple logistic regression, cigarette, age, high blood pressure(HBP) and T2DM duration were independent risk factors with respective odds ratios of 1.94 (P<0.05), 2.12(P<0.01), 2.74(P<0.05) and 1.59(P<0.05), respectively. Conclusion Older age, T2DM duration, ciga-rette, hyperglycosema, HBP, low HDL and high bs-CRP play important roles in the occurrence and development of peripheral vascular dis-ease (PVD) in elderly type 2 diabetic patients. PVD of type 2 diabetic patients can be found earlier with Doppler diagnostic instrument.

OBJECTIVEThis review aims to identify the dimensional structure of the shortened dentine hypersensitivity experience questionnaire (DHEQ-15) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).
METHODSThe Chinese language version of DHEQ-15 was applied to 210 patients with dentine hypersensitivity aged 18-70 years old. The three-dimensional construct was confirmed by CFA.
RESULTSAll the questionnaires were fully completed. The item "Because of the sensations, I take longer to finish a meal than others" was the most frequently reported by the parents. The modified three-factor model is suitable for the data. The chi-square fit statistics/degree of freedom was 2.213, the goodness-of-fit index was 0.905, the adjusted goodness-of-fit index was 0.872, the normed fit index was 0.845, the incremental fit index was 0.962, the Tucker-Lewis index was 0.969, the comparative fit index was 0.977, and the root mean square error of approximation was 0.068.
CONCLUSIONSOur findings generally support the three-dimensional construct of the DHEQ-15. Thus, DHEQ-15 can be used as a valid instrument in patients with dentine hypersensitivity in China.

Background Both functional and morphological changes in amblyopic development are known to occur at various levels in the central visual pathway. However, whether the retina is involved or not during amblyopic progression remains controversial. Objective This study was designed to compare the thicknesses of the fovea and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) of the normal fellow eye of amblyopic eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in children with myopic anisometropia. Methods Twenty-two patients with unilateral myopic anisometropic amblyopia were included as the anisometropia amblyopia group.Ten unilateral myopic anisometropic amblyopia subjects received treatment and recovered were used as the amblyopic cure group, and 11 individuals with simple myopic anisometropia without amblyopia were enrolled as the control group.OCT was performed on both eyes of all the subjects with informed consent.Fovea retinal thickness and RNFL thickness from the superior, inferior, nasal and temporal quadrants in the peripapillary region were evaluated. The measurement parameters were bilaterally compared in all the individuals by paired t test. The multiple regression model was used to analyze the correlation of retinal thickness with amblyopia patients. This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of this hospital.Written informed consent was obtain from each subject prior to the eye examination. Results Fovea retinal thickness increased in the amblyopic eyes compared with the fellow eyes, showing a statistically significant difference between them (P =0.001).However,no significant differences were found in the fovea retinal thickness between both eyes in the amblyopic cure group and simple myopic anisometropia without amblyopia group (P =0.778,0.943).Among the anisometropia amblyopia group, amblyopia cure group and simple myopic anisometropia without amblyopia group, the RNFL thicknesses of the temporal quadrant was significantly thicker in the higher myopic lateral eyes than those of the fellow eyes (P<0.001,P =0.003,P =0.046).However,the differences in the superior, inferior, nasal and the average RNFL thickness were not statistically significant between the two eyes (P>0.05).A negative correlation was found between the inferior retinal thickness with age (r=-0.559,P=0.016).Conclusions The fovea may be affected in unilateral myopic anisometropic amblyopia. There is no significant difference in the RNFL thickness between simple myopic eye and unilateral myopic anisometropia amblyopic eye.Improvement in amblyopia is coming along with the reduction of the thickness of the fovea.

BACKGROUND: Previously, there are some researches on studying the effects of hypoxia or hypothermia singly. Nowadays, study on the synthetic action of hypoxia and hypothermia has been attached widely importance.OBJECTIVE: To explore the combination effects of acute hypothermia and hypoxia on superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde in normal rabbits and rabbits with myocardial ischemia.DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.SETTING, MATERIALS and INTERVENTIONS: Experimental site:Physiological Laboratory of Youjiang Ethnic Medical College. A total of 32 healthy rabbits weighed between 1.8to 2.5 kg were chosen. They were randomly divided into 4 groups each with 8 rabbits: normal group, hypothermia and hypoxia group, ischemic group with normal temperature and oxygen, ischemic group with hypothermia and hypoxia. Normal rabbits and ischemic rabbits were put in fridge at low temperature( -10 ± 2) ℃ and low oxygen (oxygen content of 8.5% ) for one hour and tested activity of SOD and concentration of malondialdehyde in serum.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of serum SOD and malondialdehyde between normal rabbits and myocardial ischemic rabbits under the acute hypothermia and hypoxia conditions.RESULTS: The SOD level of rabbits in hypothermia and hypoxia group [(371.04 ± 29.96) kNU/L] was much lower than that of normal temperature and oxygen group[ (424.09 ± 22.59) kNU/L] ( t = 5.21, P < 0.01) while the content of malondialdehyde[ (5.58 ± 0. 44) μ mol/L] was greater than that of normal group[ (4.44 ± 1.11) μ mol/L] ( t = 3.21, P < 0.05) . In myocardial ischemia group with hypothermia and hypoxia, SOD was greatly lower than that of myocardial ischemia group with normal temperature and oxygen(t=4.37, P < 0.01) while the malondialdehyde was greatly higher than that of ischemic group with normal temperature and oxygen group(t=2.94, P <0.05).CONCLUSION: The combined effects of acute hypothermia and hypoxia will aggravate the damage to body.

A novel method for the simultaneous quantification of seven metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in human urine was developed using online solid phase extraction-HPLC with double ternary liquid chromatography system combined with fluorescence detector. The target compounds were online concentrated on the Turboflow Cyclone solid phase extraction column at first, then transferred by the six-way valve to the Hypersil Green PAH column for separation with acetonitrile and water as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1. 0 mL/min and at 35 ℃. A single sample analysis cycle took only 20 min. Under the optimized chromatographic conditions, the method showed good linear relationship ( r≥0. 999 ) in the range of 5-2000 ng/L or 50-20000 ng/L. The LODs were 0. 5-15 ng/L, and the recoveries were 80. 7%-110. 7%. The proposed method was successfully applied in the detection of metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine from several smokers and non-smokers. The concentrations of 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, 4-hydroxyphenanthrene and 6-hydroxychrysene in the smokers urine were much higher than that in non-smokers.
