Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 2011;27(2):110-112
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of medical therapy in the patients with osteoporotic vertebrae fracture. Methods The patients suffered from vertebrae fracture and had undergone percutaneous vertebroplasty operation were reviewed from May, 2006 to December, 2009. Informations were collected via case evaluation and telephone interview, regarding dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA), calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and anti-osteoporosis drugs treatment. Patients with fracture induced by trauma and tumor metastasis were excluded. Results Among 253 patients, DXA was performed only in 3.6% of patients. Calcium and vitamin D supplements were prescribed in 9.5% and 6.7% of patients, respectively. Anti-osteoporosis drugs were prescribed in 36% of patients, of them 27.5%, 29.7%, 2.2%, and 3.3% received bisphosphonate, calcitonin, ossotide, and traditional Chinese drugs respectively. 37. 4% of patients could not recall the name of the drug they had received. Conclusions Most patients with osteoporotic vertebrae fracture do not receive adequate anti-osteoporosis drugs or appropriate evaluation. More care should be given to the patients with vertebrae fracture, with regard to adequate drug treatment and appropriate evaluation in order to prevent future fractures.

Objective To evaluate the diagnosis and surgical treatment of parathyroid carcinoma (PTC). Methods Clinical data of 8 PTC cases were analyzed retrospectively. Results PTC accounted for 5. 7% of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in our hospital. There were 4 men and 4 women. Male patients had younger mean onset age compared with female patients. The disease history of PTC was shorter than PHPT of benign causes. Six patients were admitted for acute hypercalcemia. Seven patients complained of palpable neck mass. Calcium level was 3.75?0.34 mmol/L,and PTH level was 1429.47?841.75 pg/ml. Frozen section established diagnosis in only one case. Four patients underwent radical en bloc resection. Other 4 cases received routine simple parathyroidectomy, 3 patients developed recurrence in 12 - 18 months postoperatively. Conclusions Acute hypercalcemia is common in PTC. Frozen biopsy diagnosis is not satisfactory. An initial en bloc resection of tumor and adjacent structures contributes most to the prognosis.

OBJECTIVETo compare the difference in clinical efficacy on children attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) between the combined therapy of scalp acupuncture and EGG biofeedback and the simple EEG biofeedback therapy so as to search the better therapeutic method for ADHD.
METHODSOne hundred patients were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 50 cases in each one. In the control group, the simple EEG biofeedback therapy was adopted. In the observation group, on the basis of biofeedback therapy, scalp acupuncture was added and applied to Dingzhongxian (MS 5), Dingpangyixian (MS 8), Baihui (GV 20), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), etc. The ten treatments made one session. After four sessions of treatment, FIQ value in Wechsler intelligence scale, CIH score in Conners children behavior questionnaire, the ratio of 0 wave and p wave in EEG, FRCQ and FAQ in the integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test (IVA-CPT) and clinical comprehensive efficacy were observed before and after treatment in the two groups separately.
RESULTSThree cases were dropped out in the observation group and 2 cases were out in the control group. In the two groups, FIQ, FRCQ and FAQ were all increased after treatment (P < 0.01, P < 0.05); the increases in the observation group were much more significant than those in the control group after treatment (all P < 0.05). In the two groups, CIH score and the ratio of 0 wave and p wave were all reduced after treatment (P < 0.01, P < 0.05); the reduction in the observation group were much more apparent as compared with those in the control group (both P< 0.05). The total effective rate was 91.5% (43/47) in the observation group and better than 83. 3% (40/48, P < 0.01) in the control group.
CONCLUSIONThe combined therapy of scalp acupuncture and EEG biofeedback achieves the superior efficacy on children ADHD as compared with the simple biofeedback therapy. This combined therapy rapidly relieves the essential symptoms of ADHD and improves EEG waveform in children patients. Importantly, this therapy obtains and consolidates the significant efficacy.

Objective To prepare recombinant adenovirus pAd-gal-9 containing murine galectin-9 and explore galectin-9's pro-apoptotic effect on T lymphocytes. Methods The recombinant adenovirus plas-mid pAd/CMV/V5-DEST-gal-9 was prepared by conventional molecular cloning and LR reaction. The pAd/ CMV/V5-DEST-gal-9 linearlized by Pac I was transfected into 293A cells with Lipofectin 2000. Eight days after transfection, the 293A cells were subjected to freeze/thraw circle for three times and the supernatant was collected after centrifugation. Higer titer pAd-gal-9 was produced by large-scale infection of 293A cells with the supernatant containing pAd-gal-9. The supernatant was condensed to get purified pAd-gal-9 by CsCl density gradient centrifugation. After titer determination with gradient dilution of harvested pAd-gal-9 infec-tion in 293A-seeded 96-wells, pAd-gal-9 was used to infect the CHO cell line. Immunohistological assay, Western blot and flow cytometry were employed to ascertain the subcellular location expression of galectin-9. We added solid-phase transgenic CHO cells or freshly-cultured supernatant to medium containing activated T cells to detect the pro-apoptotic effect of galectin-9. Results The pAd-gal-9 was prepared successful. Im-munohistochemical staining of CHO infected with pAd-gal-9 confirmed that galectin-9 was expressed in the cytosol. Intercellular staining indicated that mean fluorescence intensity of galectin-9 was significantly higher in pAd-gal-9-infected CHO group than control group. Supernatant from pAd-gal-9-infected CHO promoted the apoptosis of T cells. The percent of apoptotic T cells was higher than the Tim-3 positive T cells. Conclu-sion CHO infected with pAd-gal-9 can secret galectin-9 to promote the apoptosis of activated T cells via Tim-3-independent mechanisms.
