The purpose of this study was to find the distribution and measurement of compressive and tensile stress when intrusi- on arch wire is forced engage with upper canine and to analysis stress at each section through FEM. And we compare compressive and tensile ratio at each section. The results were as follows. 1. At FA point and cemento-enamel junction of upper canine, compressive and tensile force ratio is about the same. 2. At apex, compressive force is the four times as tensile force. ; In intrusion, we show root resorption at apex. 3. At Cemento-enamel junction, the compressive and tensile force show the maximun value except FA point.

2.Expression of Hepatocyte Growth Factor/c-met by RT-PCR in Meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a potent mitogenic cytokine. C-met protein, which is known to be the HGF receptor has transmembrane tyrosine kinase activity and is encoded by the c-met oncogene. The HGF/c-met signaling pathway may play various roles in the carcinogenesis of various organs. METHODS: We examined HGF and c-met mRNA expression by utilizing reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction on 40 surgically resected intracranial meningiomas (25 benign, 10 atypical, and 5 anaplastic cases). RESULTS: An HGF overexpression was detected in 28%, 50%, and 80% of the benign, atypical and anaplastic meningiomas, respectively; a high expression of HGF or the coexpression of HGF/c-met was detected in the high grade meningiomas (the atypical and anaplastic cases, p=0.046, p=0.014). An HGF expression was statistically significant in the recurrent meningiomas (p=0.003), and HGF expression was significantly lower than c-met mRNA expression in benign meningiomas (p=0.034). CONCLUSIONS: There was no correlation between histologic subtypes and HGF/c-met expression. Determination of HGF expression can be used as a molecular predictor for recurrence of meningioimas. These results suggest that HGF and c-met expression in meningiomas may be associated with anaplastic progression.

4.Influence of left ventricular function on the pattern of left ventricular diastolic filling assessed by doppler echocardiography in dilated cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Recently, Doppler echocardiography has been widely used to evaluate left ventricular(LV) diastolic filling. However, There are only limited date about the influence of LV systolic function on the pattern of left ventricular diastolic filling. METHODS: To evaluate the changes of Doppler echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular filling induced by variations in left ventricular systolic function in dilated cardiomyopathy(DC) with heart failure(HF), 25 patients(M : F=14 : 11) with DC and HF, and 21 age-matched normal subjects(M : F=13 : 8) were examined by ECG, phonocardiography and echocardiography. From the Doppler recording, A2D(time from second heart sound to the onset of early diastolic mitral flow), peak velocity at early diastole(E) and late diastole(A), ratio of E to A velocity(E/A) and flow velocity integral(FVI) were measured. RESULTS: In 22 patients with DC and HF without mitral regurgitation(MR), A2D was significantly prolonged(119.5+/-12.7 vs 92.4+/-14.1msec, p<0.01), and early diastolic peak velocity and E/A velocity ratio were decreased as compared with the normal subjects(E=0.39+/-0.08 vs 0.57+/-0.12m/sec, p<0.01, E/A : 0.87+/-0.19 vs 1.33+/-0.19 vs 1.33+/-0.18, p<0.05). There were significant correlations between A2D and FVI(r=+0.73, p<0.01), and between E/A velocity ratio and FVI(r=-0.78, p<0.01). However, in 3 patients with MR, A2D(88.7+/-12.1msec), E(0.56+/-0.05m/sec), and E/A(1.32+/-0.12) were similar to those in normal subjects, despite of decreased FVI(12.0+/-0.9cm). CONCLUSIONS: These data show that a change of left ventricular systolic function in patients without MR may influence a diastolic filling pattern of left ventricle but not in patient with MR, and suggest that MR masks left ventricular distolic filling abnormalities.

While the use of food additives in food processing has become a common practice worldwide, consumers' worry about potential hazards has not diminished.The purpose of this study was to identify trends in South Korean parents' perceptions about food additives by analyzing the results of surveys conducted from 2014 to 2018.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
We conducted an off-line survey in Korea annually between 2014 and 2018 on perceptions about food additives. The numbers of survey respondents in each year from 2014 to 2018 were 381, 426, 301, 519, and 369, respectively. Our consumer respondents were parents of elementary-school-aged children.
RESULTS:
The ratios of respondents perceiving “food safety” as the most important factor in purchasing processed foods and “food additives” as the biggest threat to food safety have decreased over the years. However, most consumers still have negative perceptions of food additives. Additionally, among consumers lower confidence in or trust of the Korean government continued throughout the study period and appeared to be the main problem that needs to be overcome.
CONCLUSIONS
This study found that Korean parents are still troubled by food additives.Consumers' confidence in the government needs to be increased through public communications. More multifaceted educational programs communicating scientific knowledge of food additives are needed in order to correct consumers' misperceptions.
6.The effect of topical fluoride application on the number of salivary streptococcus mutans in orthodontic patients.

The effect of topical application on the number of S. mutans was tested in a group of 44 orthodontic patients (mean age, 12Y 3M). They were divided into 5 groups according to the method using NaF and SnF2. The number of S. mutans CFU were counted in stimulated saliva of each subject at baseline, and after one, two, three, and eight weeks. The following results were obtained. 1. In NaF rinsing group, and NaF topical application and NaF rinsing group, the number of S. mutans per ml saliva was not significantly changed. 2. In SnF2 topical application group, and SnF2 topical and NaF rinsing group, the number of S. mutans per ml saliva was significantly reduced. 3. After 8 weeks, there were no significant reduction of the number of S. mutans in comparison with baseline.

8.Diagnosis of Osteoporosis of the Foot in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Using Bone Densitometry.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severity and frequency of osteoporosis of the foot in patients with diabetes mellitus using bone densitometry, and to determine whether plain radiologic evaluation can be used as a cheap and reliable screening of osteoporosis. METHOD: We studied plain X-ray including AP and lateral views of the feet of the patients. Bone densitometry studies were performed on the feet of both diabetic and age-matched control groups. RESULTS: Forefoot bone densitometry scores were significantly lower in the male diabetic group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Furthermore, the female diabetics had significantly lower bone densitometry scores for forefoot and hindfoot than the control group (p<0.05). Bone densitometric evaluation of the diabetic patients' feet revealed scores significantly lower than those of the controls in cases which the radiologist interpreted as normal finding in plain roentgenogram alone (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Plain radiologic studies of the feet in patients with diabetes mellitus are not effective in identifying osteoporotic change; thus, they should not be used as the screening method of diabetic foot lesions.

9.Evaluation of Peripheral Polyneuropathy in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Using Quantitative Sensory Test.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether quantitative sensory test can be used as a screening test of peripheral polyneuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus, and to evaluate the severity of peripheral polyneuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus using quantitative sensory test. METHOD: We performed nerve conduction study to right upper and left lower extremity of the patients. Quantitative sensory test was performed using TSA-2001 thermal sensory analyser on right thenar and left foot dorsum in both diabetic and control groups. RESULTS: 1) The warm sense and heat pain threshold were higher, the cold sense and cold pain threshold were lower in diabetic group than age-matched control group (p<0.05). 2) The warm sense and heat pain threshold were higher, the cold sense and cold pain threshold were lower in diabetic group than young-aged control group (p<0.05). 3) As nerve conduction study results were severe, the cold sense threshold in right thenar were decreased (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Quantitative sensory study in patients with diabetes mellitus are sensitive to identify neuropathic change; thus, they would be used as the screening method of diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy.

10.Morphologic Change of Nasal Epithelium in Animal Model with Nasal Hyperreactivity.

BACKGROUND: Nasal hyperreactivity is a cardinal pathophysiological feature in allergic or nonallergic rhinitis. However, the mechanisms underlying nasal hyperreactivity are largely unknown. One of the proposed mechanisms is that epithelial damage may contribute to the development of nasal hyperreactivity. However, it is hard to find studies on this topic. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to demonstrate whether the morphological change of nasal epithelium exists in animal model with nasal hyperreactivity or not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Guinea pigs were sensitized in 10% TDI-ethyl acetate solution for 5 days, after which a recess of 3 weeks were allowed before exposing them in 5% TDI-ethyl acetate solution twice a week for 4 weeks. Thereafter, we observed the morphologic change of nasal mucosa with a light microscope and an electron microscope. RESULTS: Under the light microscopic observation, there were no morphological changes including epithelial damage in the TDI-provoked group. Under the electron microscopic, however, the widening of the intercellular space, the disruption of the basement membrane and the cytoplasmic vacuolization were observed. CONCLUSION: Morphological changes of the nasal epithelium were found in the animal model with nasal hyperreactivity under electron microscopic observation. Further studies to verify the relationship between the morphological changes and the nasal hyperreactivity will be needed.
