BACKGROUND: Reconstitution of hematopoiesis by means of peripheral blood stem cells(PBSC) has been widely used in patients with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors. We analyzed our experiences of PBSC collections with a MCS3p(Haemonetics Corp. Braintree, MA,USA) and investigated factors that may affect the collection of PBSC. METHOD: The forty-seven harvests in 11 cancer patients(median age 48, 4 males: 7 females) were performed during marrow recovery after administration of anticancerous regimens and and hematopoietic growth factors. RESULTS: Median number of WBC & mononuclear cells(MNCs) in preapheresis was 4,700/pl and 1,472/pl, retrospectively. A total of 11.2 x 10'(range 5.4-17.0) MNCs were collected from 7.2 l (5.5-8.9) blood processed per procedure. The mean percentage of CD34 positive cells in the product was 1.9%(0.9-2.9). Collection efficiency was 58.1%. While age of patients or total processed blood volume did not affect for total number of MNC collected, the number of WBCs including MNCs on the day of harvest was an importanr factor for higher yield of MNCs(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: We concluded that Haemonetics MCS3P. Is a fully automated blood cell separator with good collection efficiency for hematopoietic progenitor cells.(Korean J Blood Transfusion 10(1): 35-41,1999)

To evaluate usefulness of MR in assessment of tumor response to the chemotheraphy, we prospectively studied cases of cervical carcinoma with more then 2.5cm in diameter or stage IIb or more. Three courses of chemotherapy were performed with cisplatin and 5 F-U. MR images were obtained both before and after chemotherapy. Nine of 13 patients were undertaken radical hysterectomy after chemotherapy and MR examination. MR volumetry, stage and depth of stromal invasion were compared before and after chemotherapy. And in 9 patients who underwent radical hysterectomy, comparison of pathologic and MR imaging findings were also done. @ES The results were following. @EN 1) All tumors dectrased in volume (m=80.5%). 2) Five tumors (38.5%) reduced in stage, IB→CIS(1); IIA→CIS(1), IIA→IB(2), IIB→IB(1). 3) Depth of stromal invasion in MRI correlated well with that of histo-pathologic specimen in 7 of the 9 patients. Conclusively MR imaging is useful in assessement of tumor response to chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Recently, clinical use of fresh frozen plasma(FFP) has increased in all blood transfusion activity. But inappropriate uses of FFP may be serious problem due to adverse transfusion reactions, viral transmission, and economic aspects. The aim of this study is to justify clinical indication of FFP by receiving the inappropriate use of them. METHODS: Analyzing hospital records of 115 patients transfused with FFP at Kyung Hee Medical Center from January to April 1998, retrospectively, we investigated the purpose of transfusions, the volume of transfused FFP, and the results of pre- and post-coagulation tests. RESULTS: The most common purpose of transfusions of FFP was plasma volume replacement after surgical operation. Coagulation tests of pre- and post-transfusion were performed 85% and 47%, respectively. Fifty-seven patients(88%) transfused FFP have shown normal results in pre-coagulation tests, and the volume replacement with FFP was done inadequately in 62 cases(54%). CONCLUSION: We conclude that, in order to eliminate side effects due to inappropriate use of FFP, and protect patients, it is necessary to make guidelines of FFP transfusion, educate hospital staffs regularly, and perform pre- and post-coagulation tests routinely for the patients who need FFP transfusion. The association rate of antibody with antigen has been reported to be greatly increased by lowering ionic strength. Low-ionic strength salt solution(LISS) method has been used for the detection of various alloantibodies. To investigate the sensitivity of LISS in indirect antiglobulin test, a comparison study of LISS with saline and albumin methods was conducted. A total of 32 patients' samples requested for indirect antiglobulin test were evaluated. Out of 32 patients with clinical immune hemolytic anemia, 11(34.3%) were positive in 37 degrees C saline antiglobulin test, 18(56.2%) in albumin antiglobulin test, 23(71.8%) in LISS antiglobulin test respectively. These results were statistically analyzed using non parametric Page's test for ordered alternatives. LISS method is more sensitive than 37 degrees C saline method or albumin method significantly (p<0.01).

Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma(AEGC(3) has been called as atypical necrcibiosis lipoidica, Mieschers granuloma of the face and scalp, and actinic granu- Joma and needs differen(iation from granuloma annulare, elastosis perforans serpiginosa and nerrobiosis lipoidica. We report a case of AECCG occurring in a 53-year-old male. The patient. had an annular erythematous plaque measuring 4 cm in diameter with serpiginous raised edges and slightly atrophic centers on the right forearm for 5 years. The histopathologic finding showed patchy dermal infiltration of lymphocytes, histiocytes, and multinucleated giant cells engulfing elastic fibers. The. skin lesion cleared after intrader mal injection cf cortieosteroids.
