Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) has been suspected as a possible gene therapy candidate for orthopedic diseases. We demonstrated that the TGF-beta gene therapy can be applicable to orthopedic patients. After transfection of TGF-beta cDNA sequence to myoblasts [C2 (280)] and fibroblasts (NIH 3T3), stable cell lines with TGF-beta mRNA expression were selected by Northern analysis. To evaluate the possibility of clinical application of these cells to orthopedic diseases, the cells were injected into rabbit achilles tendon. Intratendinous injection was done to evaluate the viability of the cells and to determine the optimal concentration for in vivo expression. At 6 weeks after injection, the injected tendon was thickened with newly formed collagen. The results from this experiment indicates that these cells survived and stimulated matrix formation in rabbit achilles tendon. We concluded that TGF-beta cDNA transfected cells can be useful in the evaluation of TGF-beta biology in vivo.

5.A Case of Acquired Tufted Angioma.

Acquired tufted angioma is a benign, progressive vascular lesion that has a distinctive histopathologic appearance. We report a 31-year-old man with acquireed tufted angioma. Several reddish papules and plaque were present on the neck. The lesion had been present for 6 months. They had enlarged slowly, and were slightly tender. Histopathologic examination of the biopsy specimen showed round to ovoid cellular tufts of capillaries, most prominent in the middle to lower dermis.

6.The Characteristics and Diagnostic Methods of Food Protein Induced Proctocolitis.

Food protein induced proctocolitis (FPIPC) is a non-IgE mediated food allergy. FPIPC occurs exclusively among breast-fed infants within the first months of life. FPIPC is often diagnosed clinically in normal-conditioned infants with rectal bleeding. But FPIPC among infancy with rectal bleeding is less general than conceived. The endoscopic findings reveal an edematous and erythematous mucosa with superficial erosions or ulcerations, bleeding and lymphoid nodular hyperplasia. The prominent eosinophilic infiltrates in the rectosigmoid mucosa are important for the histopathologic diagnosis of FPIPC. However, in explaining eosinophilic infiltration within the lamina propria of the mucosa, it is necessary to differentiate whether it is a part of normal findings or occurs due to inflammatory reactions. Oral food challenge and elimination test is performed to identify the same clinical reaction as the symptom of FPIPC by the administration of a specific type of food to infants. The most common causal food is cow's milk. Thus oral food challenge and elimination test can be the effective way of confirming FPIPC, reducing the possibility of misdiagnosis. The purpose of this report is to identify the characteristics of FPIPC, to introduce its diagnostic methods, and to suggest the future direction of research.

7.The dietary therapy and use of probiotics in the treatment of pediatric acute diarrhea.

In the process of medical care of acute diarrhea in children, two pathophysiologic aspects should be considered: dehydration associated with electrolyte imbalance, and nutritional disorder. It is important to continue to provide foods easy to digest with appropriate recipes from the early stage after a remedy of dehydration using oral rehydration solution or intravenous fluid therapy according to patients' condition. Nil per os or diluted diet can slow the recovery of an intestinal function and lengthen the diarrheal period. Although the damage on the intestinal mucosa occurs from various causes, the gastrointestinal mucosa maximizes absorbing capacity by expanding the area of a surface. Early oral-feeding contributes to restoring mucosa favorably and thus facilitates a rapid improvement of symptoms. Breast-feeding should continue to be performed in the midst of rehydration, and lactose-containing regular cow's milk formula is recommended for cow's milk-fed patients after rehydration. In mild or severe acute diarrhea, administering probiotics in conjunction with feeding is expected to shorten the diarrheal period.

8.The Effect of Deep Breathing Method on Pulmonary Ventilatory Function of Patients Who experiened Upper-abdominal surgery.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of deep breathing exercise with Incentive Spirometer on the pulmonary ventilatory function of postoperative patients. This experiment was operated by quasi-experimental design which was compared pre-experimental measures with post-experimental ones. The subject of this study was 46 inpatients who were scheduled for elective upper abdominal surgery under the general anesthesia in P National University Hospital in Pusan and classified into the experimental group(23 patients) and control group(23 patients) by using Incentive Spirometer or unusing one. The data were collected from November, 1, 1993, to December, 31, 1993. The effects of the deep breathing exercise on the pulmonary ventilatory function were compared between experimental group who were received deep breathing exercise with Incentive Spirometer and control group who were received same method without Incentive Spirometer. The Forced Vital Capacity(FVC) and the First Second Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) were represented as index of the pulmonary ventilatory function and those were measured by Vitalograph Compact. The collected data were analysed by SPSS/PC+ (percentage, average, standard deviation, chi-square test, t-test, and ANOVA). The results were as follow : (1) The FVCs of the experimental group were significantly increased in course of time, 24, 48, 72 hours after surgery(F=3.53, P=0.035). (2) The FVCs and FEV1s of the control group were significantly increased in course of time, 24, 48, 72 hours after surgery(FVCs :F=3.480, P=0.037, FEV1s:F=6.153, P=0.004). (3) The FVC which was measured at 72 hours after surgery was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group(t=2.620, P=0.013). (4) The FEV1s which were measured at 24 and 72 hours after surgery were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group(24hr. : t=2.530, P=0.017, 72hr. : t=2.540, P=0.016). (5) Among general characteristics, sex was significant variable which influenced to effect of pulmonary ventilatory function. In conclusion, this study showed that the deep breathing exercise with Incentive Spirometer was more effective to recover the pulmonary ventilatory function after surgery than the deep breathing exercise without Incentive Spirometer.

9.The Effect of a Scenario based Hand Hygiene Education Program on Hand Hygiene Knowledge, Hand Hygiene Perception, Hand Hygiene Compliance and Hand Hygiene Method in Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to test the effect of a scenario based hand hygiene education program on hand hygiene knowledge, hand hygiene perception, hand hygiene compliance and hand hygiene method in nursing students. METHODS: A non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized quasi-experimental design was used. Forty five nursing students participated in the study with 22 in the experimental group and 23 in the control group. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2-test, t-test, and repeated measures of ANOVA. RESULTS: There were significant increases in hand hygiene knowledge (t=-4.28, p<.001) and accuracy of the hand hygiene method by week (F=7.33, p<.001). However, hand hygiene perception (t=-1.67, p=.102) and hand hygiene compliance rate (F=7.33, p=.405) were not significantly changed. CONCLUSION: The effects of the scenario based hand hygiene education program provided in this study were excellent, compared to the other hand hygiene education programs. Moreover, as a result of investigating the education effects through direct observation for 4 weeks, appropriate feedback was offered in the third week, and it was found that maintaining the effect was necessary. However, the current status of hand hygiene compliance and accuracy of methods for ensuring hand hygiene need to be studied further.

10.Anatomy Cartoon for Common People.

Anatomy must be known not only by medical students but also by health science students. Furthermore, common people had better know anatomy because anatomy helps them keep their own health and dig up their own curiosity of body. It is desirable that common people learn morphology and function of the human body using easy, familiar, and interesting anatomy cartoon. But we could not find such a Korean anatomy cartoon, so that we tried to make anatomy cartoon for common people as follows. For anatomy cartoon, anatomist decided anatomy contents to write sentences. Based on the sententces, raw illustrations of anatomy cartoon were drawn on the paper with a pencil. Final illustrations of anatomy cartoon (931 cuts) were drawn on Adobe Illustrator of the personal computer. In addition, anatomy comic cartoon composed of four cuts (100 episodes) were drawn. Anatomy term explanations, anatomy photographs, and anatomy movies were created and hyperlinked with the anatomy cartoon, all of which were distributed through homepage (anatomy.co.kr), CD title, and book. The anatomy cartoon will be helpful not only to anatomy study of the common people and health science students but also to preliminary anatomy study of the medical students.
