BACKGROUNDPrevious studies have suggested that hypothyroidism correlated with coronary heart diseases (CHD) mortality in long-term cohort, but whether the thyroid function status is associated with myocardial injury in acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has not been investigated sufficiently.
METHODSFive hundred and eighty-two hospitalized patients from January 2010 to December 2011, with the diagnosis of STEMI, were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent testing for thyroid function status, cardiac troponin I (cTnI), cardiac enzymes, C-reactive protein (CRP). We investigated the association between thyroid hormone levels and cardiac markers (creatine kinase-MB and cTnI), and thus evaluated the potential role of thyroid function status in predicting the myocardial injury.
RESULTSThere were 76 patients (13.06%) who had hypothyroidism including low-T3-syndrome (34 patients, 5.84%), subclinical hypothyroidism (28 patients, 4.81%) and clinical hypothyroidism (14 patients, 2.41%). After adjusting for conventional risk factors (age, gender, smoking, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension), free triiodothyronine (FT3) was significantly and negatively correlated with log-CKMB (r = -0.244, P < 0.001) and log-cTnI (r = -0.290, P < 0.001), indicating that the lower thyroid hormone level correlates with the severer cardiac injury in STEMI patients. FT3 also had a moderate negative correlation with CRP (r = -0.475, P < 0.001), which might indicate that hypothyroidism may activate the inflammation response. No significant correlation was found between other thyroid parameters (TSH, FT4) and cardiac markers.
CONCLUSIONSAs the lower FT3 level correlates with higher level of cardiac markers and lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), the hypothyroidism may be a predictor for myocardial injury in STEMI. And these results may warrant further study to investigate whether reversing the hypothyroidism could benefit the STEMI patients.

OBJECTIVEThe objective of the present study was to investigate the feasibility and reliability of sintering alumina and zirconia-based all-ceramic materials through a recently introduced microwave heating technique. The variation of crystal phases, the growth of grain sizes and microstructural features of these materials were evaluated after sintering.
METHODSFour different groups of powder (l00%Al2O3, 60%Al2O3+40%ZrO2, 40% Al2O3+60%ZrO2, 100% ZrO2) were respectively press-compacted to fabricate green disk samples, 5 specimen of each group were prepared. All the samples were surrounded by refractory materials for heat containment and processed at 1 600 degrees C in a domestic microwave oven (850 W, 2 450 MHz), 1 600 degrees C/5 min for heating rate, 10 min for holding time. After sintering, the phase composition and average grain size of these ceramics were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Their microstructure characteristics were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
RESULTSAll the specimens were successfully sintered with the application of microwave heating system in combination with a suitable thermal insulator. No phase change was found in alumina while monoclinic-zirconia was found to be transformed to tetragonal-zirconia. A little grain size growth of Al2O3 and ZrO2 has been observed with Al2O3 24.1 nm/before and 51.8 nm/after; ZrO2 25.3 nm/before and 29.7 nm/after. The SEM photos indicated that the microwave-sintered Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics had a uniform crystal distribution and their crystal sizes could be maintained within the range of nanometers.
CONCLUSIONIt is expected that in the near future microwave heating system could be a promising substitute for conventional processing methods due to its unparalled advantages, including more rapid heating rate, shortened sintering time, superfine grain size, improved microstructure and much less expensive equipment.

The vip3 A gene in a size of 2.3 kb amplified from wild-type Bacillus thuringiensis strain S184 by PCR was cloned into pGEM-T Easy vector and its sequence was analysized by DNASTAR. The plasmid pOTP was constructed by inserting vip3A-S184 gene into the expression vector pQE30 and then was transformed into E. coli M15. E. coli M15 cells harbouring the plasmid pOTP were induced with 1 mmol/L IPTG to express 89 kD protein which was confirmed to be Vip3A-S184 by Western blot. Experiments showed that about 19% of Vip3A-S184 proteins were soluble, and others were insoluble proteins and formed inclusion bodies observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The target protein was purified under the native condition and the polyclonal antibody was prepared by immunizing rabbits. The polyclonal antibody was used to detect Vip3A proteins expressed in Bacillus thuringiensis. Bioassay showed that Vip3A-S184 showed a high toxicity against 3 tested insect larvae including Spodoptera exigua, Spodoptera litura and Helicoverpa armigera.

Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2013;15(11):1023-1027
OBJECTIVETo explore the role and mechanisms of FOXO3a nuclear translocation in neuronal apoptosis after hypoxia-ischemia (HI).
METHODSOne hundred and sixty 10-day-old Sprague-Dawly rats were randomly divided into two groups: HI and sham-operated. The right common carotid artery was ligated followed by hypoxia exposure for 2.5 hours in the HI group. The sham-operated group rats were not subjected to carotid artery ligation or hypoxia treatment. Rat cerebral cortex was collected at 0.5, 2, 4, 8 and 24 hours after hypoxia. Western blot was used to detect expression of total FOXO3a protein, pnuclear and cytoplasmic FOXO3a and Bim. TUNEL staining was used to detect apoptotic cells.
RESULTSThe nuclear protein of FOXO3a obviously increased from 0.5 to 24 hours after HI in a time-dependent manner compared with the sham-operated group (P<0.01). On the contrary, cytoplasmic protein evidently decreased from 0.5 to 24 hours in the HI group compared with the sham-operated group (P<0.01). Bim protein increased from 0.5 hour, peaked at 2 hours, started to decline at 4 hours (P<0.01), and returned to baseline level at 8 and 24 hours after HI in the HI group compared with the sham-operated group. TUNEL positive cells started to express at 4 hours, and peaked at 24 hours after HI (P<0.01). However, TUNEL positive cells were rarely found in the sham-operated group.
CONCLUSIONSHI induces FOXO3a translocation from cytoplasm to nucleus, and enhances protein expression of its target gene Bim in the neonatal rat brain. The upregulation of Bim expression might be related to neuronal apoptosis.

Objective This study aims to investigate the moral disgust cognitive processing of patients with obses?sive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and its relationship with OCD symptoms. Methods Twenty-eight OCD and 30 healthy controls matched for gender, age and education completed lexical decision task, recording reaction time and accuracy of words and assessing the degree of disgust. Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale (Y-BOCS) and Padua Invento?ry-Washington State University Revision (PI-WUSR) were used to assess the symptoms. Results OCD group showed significantly longer reaction time to core disgust-related words [(762.69 ± 128.25) ms vs. (648.69 ± 162.66) ms] and moral disgust-related words [(798.73 ± 115.26) ms vs. (727.00 ± 106.06) ms] than the healthy controls (P<0.05). OCD group showed significantly higher aversion degree to core disgust-related words [(6.38 ± 1.78) vs. (5.03 ± 1.64)] and moral dis?gust-related words [(7.08 ± 1.23) vs. (5.77 ± 1.44)] than control group (P<0.05). Y-BOCS total score, Y-BOCS obsessive thoughts score, Y-BOCS compulsive behavior score, total score of PI-WUSR, cleaning/pollution force factor score, hurt?ing themselves and others force factor were positively correlated with two types of disgust-related words in patients group (P<0.05). Multiple stepwise regression analysis between disgust words and Y-BOCS/PI-WUSR scores pointed that only CWCF influenced disgust degree of core disgust-related words (β=0.61, P<0.01) and moral disgust-related words (β=0.54, P<0.01), respectively. Conclusion The core disgust and moral disgust of OCD are stronger compared to controls.
