1.A Case of Crescentic Glomerulonephritis Superimposed on Membranous Glomerulonephropathy.

Cytologic findings of pleural effusion in three cases of rhabdomyosarcoma are reported. Case 1 was a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma which had devoped at the chest wall of an elderly male patient and caused pleural effusion. The cytologic features were consistent with pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, that was, showing loose clusters, cellular pleomorphism, and abundant finely vesicular cytoplasm. Cases 2 and 3 were embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas in young adults. Primary site was the oral cavity in case 1, but unknown in case 2 and case 3. The effusion cytology was similar in these cases. Clustered or isolated small round cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and scanty cytoplasm were smeared. The cohesiveness of tumor cells was weak and the cells did not show linear arrangement or nuclear molding. Effusion cytology in a sarcoma patient would be diagnostic when the primary site and the type of sarcoma were already known.

3.TNF-alpha and IL-12 Secretion in Macrophages in Response to Spores of Bacillus anthracis Sterne.

Baerobic, spore forming, and rod-shaped bacterium. Anthrax spores are introduced into macrophage by phagocytosis and multiply after germination. The anthrax spores infected in macrophage produce lethal toxin eventually caused cell death. In this study, we analyzed apoptosis and cytokine TNF-alpha and IL-12 secretion after the infection of spores of B. anthracis Sterne in the murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells and in the primary human macrophages. In murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells infected by spore of B. anthracis Sterne, the cells were markedly changed in secretion of TNF-alpha (482~6,213 pg/ml) by lethal toxin, and induced apoptosis. In case of RAW264.7 cells infected by formalin-inactivated spores of B. anthracis, the cells were not able to produce lethal toxin, which released lower level concentration of TNF-alpha (7.7~97.2 pg/ml), and rarely induced apoptosis. When primary human macrophage cells infected with spores of B. anthracis Sterne, they secreted TNF-alpha (5~16 pg/ml), and induced apoptosis about 1% of total cells. We presented that inducing apoptosis by spores of B. anthracis Sterne capable of expressing lethal toxin is related with the secretion of TNF-alpha in murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells. These studies revealed that human and murine macrophages has affected differently by anthrax lethal toxin produced by spores of B. anthracis Sterne.

4.Grayanotoxin Intoxication: 3 Case Reports.

Traditionally, the Rhododendron species has been used in gastrointestinal disorder or hypertension. Grayanotoxin exists in honey, flowers, pollen, and the nectar of the Rhododendron species. We experienced 3 cases of Grayanotoxin intoxication. The symptoms of intoxication were nausea, vomiting, hypotension, bradycardia, diplopia, dizziness, and chest discomfort. Generally, the treatment for Grayanotoxin intoxication is fluid resuscitation and injection of atropine sulfate. The patients who were intoxicated with Grayanotoxin were discharged without complication after supportive care.

7.Immunohistochemical Study on the Changes of Neuropeptide Y Immunoreactive Neurons in the Corpus Striatum and Motor System of Aged Rat.

Decreased number of the Neuropeptide-Y[NPY] immunoreactive neurons in the corpus striatum and primary motor cortex of aged rat was detected by the immunohistochemical method. The animals were categorized into control and aged group and we used 10 Sprague-Dawley rat weighing 250-300gm for control group. 10 Sprague-Dawley rat weighing over 600gm for aged group. The number of NPY-immunoreactive neurons in corpus striatum and primary motor cortex were counted under the light microscope and the following results were obtained. 1. The NPY-immunoreactive neurons were evenly distributed in corpus striatum and in the primaty motor cortex, the NPY-immunoreactive neurons were concentrated within the layer II, III and layer V, VI. The typical NPY-immunoreactive perikarya was multipolar shape. 2. Decreased number of NPY-immunoreactive neurons were detected in some areas of corpus striatum and primary mortor cortex of the aged rat. 3. Decrease of NPY-immunoreactive neurons were most prominent in the caudate-putamen and there were moderate decrease of NPY-immunoreactive neurons in the primary motor cortex, mild decrease of NPY-immunoreactive neurons in the nucleus accumbens but the NPY-immunoreactive neurons were not observed in the globus pallidus in both control and aged rat. NPY is supposed to act as a neurotransmitter of local circuit neurons in the striatum and may exert its potent vasoconstrictor effects on cerebral vessels which influences on the microcirculation of cerebral cortex and striatum. So our results seems to provide an important data on change of the function in the striatum and primary motor cortex of aged rat brain.

Decompression is considered an effective treatment for odontogenic cystic lesions in the jaw. A variety of decompression devices are successfully used for the treatment of keratocystic odontogenic tumors, radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, and ameloblastoma. The purpose of these devices is to keep an opening between the cystic lesion and the oral environment during treatment. The aim of this report is to describe an effective decompression tube using a stainless steel tube and wire for treatment of jaw cystic lesions.

9.Functional Differences of the Lymphocytes in Nasal Polyps between Allergic and Non-Allergic Patients.

Lymphocytes can produce various kinds of cytokines which are responsible for the development of the infectious and allergic inflammation. We focused on the role of the lymphocyte in the pathogenesis of the nasal polyp. This study was designed to evaluate the functional differences of the lymphocytes between allergic and non-allergic polyp. Lymphocytes were obtained from peripheral blood and tissues of polyp in 12 patients with non-allergic polyp, 7 patients with allergic polyp and 5 normal subjects as control. Cytokines were measured with ELISA from each group of lymphocytes after stimulation with Concanavalin A (Con A). We compared the production of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interferon (IFN)-gamma between the non-allergic and allergic groups. The levels of IL-4 and IL-6 from polyp tissue lymphocytes were higher in allergic group, while those of IL-2 and IFN-gamma were higher in non-allergic group. The levels of IL-4, IL-6 and TNF-alpha from peripheral blood lymphocytes were higher in allergic group, and IFN-gamma was higher in non-allergic group. These results suggest that cytokine productivity of the polyp tissue lymphocytes appear to be parallel to that of the peripheral blood lymphocytes in each group and shows distinct pattern of ytokine production between two groups.

10.Comparative Clinicopathological Analysis of Primary Neutrophilic Scarring Alopecia:Folliculitis Decalvans and Dissecting Cellulitis

Background:
Folliculitis decalvans and dissecting cellulitis are types of primary neutrophilic cicatricial alopecia characterized by permanent hair loss. Clinicopathological differentiation is poorly described in literature.
Objective:
This study aimed to determine the clinicopathological distinction between folliculitis decalvans and dissecting cellulitis.
Methods:
A retrospective review was conducted in 45 patients diagnosed with dissecting cellulitis and folliculitis decalvans between 2011 and 2021. We reviewed the clinical features using electronic medical records, clinical photographs, and histopathologic features.
Results:
Clinically, middle-aged men with folliculitis decalvans showed polytrichia (80%) and papulopustules (55%), while young men with dissecting cellulitis had deeply seated nodules (84%). Histopathologically, follicular plugging was more frequently observed in dissecting cellulitis (80%) than in folliculitis decalvans (50%). There was a difference in the depth of inflammation between the two types.
Conclusion
A difference in clinical manifestations was observed according to the depth of inflammation. These findings may contribute to the differential diagnosis of primary neutrophilic cicatricial alopecia.
