The relationship between the intestinal histopathology and number and position of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) was observed chronologically in the small intestine of rats experimentally infected with Metagonimus yokogawai. Fifteen Sprague-Dawley rats were orally infected each with 3,000 metacecariae, and 3 were kept uninfected for controls. Three rats each were sacrificed on the day 5, 10, 15, 24 and 70 post-infection (PI) and samples of the small intestine, 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm and 70 cm posterior to the pylorus were taken. The samples were processed routinely and stained with Giemsa. The intestinal histopathology was severe during the day 5-15 PI and characterized by villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia, and decrease of villus/crypt height ratio. After the day 24 PI, the intestinal lesions showed some tendency of recovery. The number of IEL increased at the early stage of infection, but decreased thereafter to a lower level than that of controls, with progression of the pathological changes. Then, the IEL number began to increase again after the day 24 PI. In control rats, the great majority of the IEL were located at the basal region of the epithelium. During the early stage of infection, however, a considerable proportion of IEL was found to have moved to the intermediate or apical region of the epithelium. From the above results, it is suggested that the change of IEL number and position during the course of M. yokogawai infection should be closely related to the progression and recovery of the intestinal histopathology.

Comamonas testosteroni and Acinetobacter guillouiae are gram-negative bacilli of low virulence that are widely distributed in nature and normal flora. Despite their common occurrence in environments, they rarely cause infectious disease. We experienced a case of septic shock by C. testosterone and A. guillouiae, and isolated them by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing method from the blood cultures of a previous healthy female during postoperative supportive care. This is the first case of septic shock required ventilator care and continuous renal replacement therapy due to these organisms in Korea.

Central serous chorioretinopathy is a disease which causes decreased visual acuity and functional disturbance. As the subretinal fluid is absorbed, the visual acuity is improved but patient's complaint such as metamorphosia is remained. To assess the recovery of visual functional disturbance in response to absorption of the fluid, the hue discrimination and contrast sensitivity were tested in central serous retinopathy patients (N=30) at the first visit, first visit after the absorption of subretinal fluid, and final visit. At the first visit, there were stastically significant differences in the mean square root of total error score, blue-yellow and red-green partial error score between normal control group and central serous retinopathy group and stastically significant differences in all spatial frequency between normal group and central serous retinopathy group. First visit after the absorption of subretinal fluid, and final visit, there were stastically significant differences in the mean square root of total error score, blue-yellow and red-green partial error score between normal control group and central serous retinopathy group and stastically significant differences in mid-high spatial frequency between normal group and central serous retinopathy group.

Five cases of histologically proven polymorphic reticulosis were examined with computed tomography(CT). CT findings were mucosal thickening along the septal and lateral walls of the nasal cavities(n=4), obliteration of the contour of the nasopharynx(n=4), involvement of the paranasal sinuses (n=2), destruction of the nasal septum and/or sinus walls(n=3) and mass in the palate, tonsil or neck (n=1). CT examination was helpful in determining the extent of the disease in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. However, lesions in the palate and tonsils could not be easily evaluated with CT. CT findings of polymorphic reticulosis are nonspecific and granulomatous diseases may show similar CT findings.

Patients who had posterior synechiae associated with uveitis,IOL mplantation, vitrectomy, underwent Nd-YAG synechiolysis had been treated with topical corticosteroids and surgical iridectomy. Even minimal dilatation of the pupil by Nd YAG synechiolysis enable the patient to read and the surgeon to postpone cataract surgery and evaluate optic disc or fundus. Also, pupil block may be treated by detaching the synechiae.18 Patients (20 eyes) with posterior synechiae underwent Nd-YAG synechiolysis at Kangnam St.Mary's Hospital from November 1997 to August 1998. An average of 17.14 +/-6.43mJ laser were used. The average prelaser pupil size was 3.78 +/-0.98 mm ;postlaser, 5.13 +/-1.27 mm.This change was statistically significant (p<0.01). Microhyphema and pigment dispersion developed in 4 eyes. However,no significant long-term complications occurred, and there were no obvious lenticular damage and pupil abnormality. Because this laser treatment is relatively safe and offers some possibility of visual improvement, we recom-mend Nd-YAG synechiolysis,but only if performed by an experienced laser microsurgeon.

We reported a case of recurrent arteriovenous malformation, which had been operated on before and disappeared on postoperative angiography. Though a postoperative angiogram after the first operation indicated complete excision of the lesion, the patient returned with intracerebral hemorrhage, and an angiogram indicated reappearance of the lesion. Total excision was carried out at the second operation. It is concluded that long term follow-up angiography or vascular imaging procedures are required in particular cases of cerebral arteriovenous malformation with hematoma, difficulty in hemostasis and/or deep seated lesion.

To get the pure clinical results of Yag Laser Posterior Capsulotomy, excluding all the possible factors that might affect the results of that, we performed posterior capsulotomies on after cataracts(118 eyes) by using Q-switched Nd:Yag laser from February 1987 to August 1989 and reviewed the results. Group A is composed of 68 surgical aphakic eyes and group B is composed of 50 Posterior chamber pseudophakic eyes. The results were as follows: 1. One eye in groupA and one eye in group B were congenital cataracts and the others were all adult and senile cataracts. 2. As a result of posterior capsulotomy, 59 eyes(86.8%) in group A and 42(84%) in group B were above 0.5 in corrected visual acuity. 3. On performing, the power setting was under 1.5mJ in 59 eyes(86.8%) in groupA and 40 eyes(80%) in group B. 4. Ocular complications developed in 35 eyes(51.5%) in group A and 15 eyes(30%) in group B. 5. Good preoperative ocular condition may predict good postoperative clinical results. 6. Less energy and pulses in operation combined with less occurrences of vitrous prolapse in group B might be associated with less development of postoperative complications in group B than in group A.

A facial nerve palsy is described in a patient who underwent IVRO for the correction of a facial asymmetry and anterior openbite. A possible mechanism of facial nerve injury is discussed.
