2.Dietary Habits and Taste Preferences of the Korean Americans According to Self Body Image Perception and Length of Residence in US.

BACKGROUND: Weight overestimation of Korean Americans may be associated with dietary habits and preferences for foods and tastes. METHODS: The subjects were 100 Korean Americans in New York City and LA and 100 Koreans in Seoul, who were 20-29 years old. Self-reported questionnaire consisted of age, height, weight, length of residence in US, preferences for 10 foods and 5 tastes, dietary habits and perception of self body image. Korean Americans were further divided into 3 groups according to length of residence in US. RESULTS: More Korean American women underestimated (27.3% vs. 5.8%), and less overestimated their body weights, than Korean women (31.8% vs. 53.8%, P=0.008). Korean Americans who overestimated their own body weights had significantly higher preference for salty taste and significantly lower dietary habit score regarding regular meals. CONCLUSIONS: Overestimation of self body size, rather than longer residence in US may be associated with the undesirable dietary habit and taste preference of Korean Americans, highlighting the importance of correct body image.

3.Rest-activity circadian rhythm in hospitalized older adults with mild cognitive impairment in Korea and its relationship with salivary alpha amylase: an exploratory study

Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate the rest-activity circadian rhythm (RAR) using data obtained from wearable actigraph devices in hospitalized older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and to investigate its relationship with salivary alpha amylase (sAA).
Methods:
This secondary data analysis used data from the Hospitalized Older Adults’ Cognition and Physical Activity Study. Actigraph data for 3-4 days were analyzed for RAR. RAR indices such as interdaily stability (IS), intradaily variability (IV), activity level during the most active 10-hour period and during the most least active 5-hour period, and relative amplitude (RA) were calculated. Data on sAA collected in the morning and general characteristics, including body mass index (BMI), were analyzed.
Results:
Data from 92 hospitalized older adults with MCI were analyzed. The IS, IV, RA were 0.23, 0.73, 0.88, respectively. The average level of sAA was 77.02 U/mL, and a higher level of sAA was significantly associated with better IS and RA in the regression analysis, while age, BMI, and cognitive level were not. BMI showed positive correlations with IS and RA.
Conclusion
RAR in the hospitalized older adults with MCI was attenuated, showing especially low IS, which implies they failed to maintain regular and repetitive 24-hour RAR. Increased sAA and BMI were associated with robust RAR. Nurses need to pay attention to maintain robust RAR in hospitalized older adults with MCI, and strategies should be developed to improve their RAR.
4.The Effects of Kangaroo Care on Maternal Self-esteem and Premature Infants' Physiological Stability.

PURPOSE: This paper identified the effects of kangaroo care (KC) on maternal self-esteem and the growth and physiological stability of premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: The experiment was conducted with an experimental group of 17 infants, and a control group of 17 infants selected by convenience sampling. KC was given to the infants one time a day for 30 minutes after feeding for two weeks. Their weight was measured every morning, and their physiological stability was measured in terms of their body temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and stability of the cardio-respiratory system in premature infants (SCRIP) score, as physiological responses at every 10 minutes during the intervention. Maternal self-esteem was assessed by a maternal self-report inventory. RESULTS: The experimental group showed significant increase in the self-esteem of mothers. Also, KC was effective on physiological stabilization of preterm infants. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that KC can be provided in clinical settings more widely in Korea as one of the nursing interventions aimed at promoting maternal self-esteem as well as infants' physiological stabilization.

5.Expression of Pain Receptors by Arthritis Treatment in Collagen Induced Murine Model of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is typically characterized by induced inflammatory pain in joints. Recent studies have reported on the expression of pain receptors such as transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and acid sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3), which are related to pain induction and regulation. This study was conducted to investigate the expression of TRPV1 and ASIC3 in response to the analgesic effect of an arthritis treatment in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). METHODS: Mice were divided into 3 groups: Control, CIA, and CIA with arthritis treatment. Mice received intraperitoneal injection with 10 mg/kg infliximab and 10 mg/kg meloxicam five times per week for 3 weeks. Mechanical hyperalgesia, histologic examination of the feet, serum levels of inflammatory cytokine such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-17 (IL-17), TRPV1 and ASIC3 expression were investigated. RESULTS: The serum levels of IL-6 and IL-17 were lower in the treatment group (73.77+/-10.11 pg/mL and 26.75+/-7.17 pg/mL, respectively) compared to the CIA group (p<0.001). Histological analysis showed decreased synovial cell proliferation, leukocyte infiltration, and cartilage destruction in the treatment group compared with the CIA group. The CIA group that underwent arthritis treatment showed a significantly increased withdrawal threshold of mechanical nociception on the hind paw and increased expression of TRPV1 and ASIC3 compared to the CIA group. CONCLUSION: Arthritis treatment resulted in an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect through upregulation of the activity of TRPV1 and ASIC3 in CIA mice.

6.Factors Associated with Bone Mineral Density in Korean Postmenopausal Women Aged 50 Years and Above: Using 2008-2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in Korean postmenopausal women. The data from 2008-2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used for data analysis. Subjects were 2,701 postmenopausal women aged > or = 50 years. BMDs at whole body, total femur, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Dietary data from 24-hour dietary recall and a food frequency questionnaire containing 63 food items were used. The proportions of osteopenia at total femur, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were 37.4%, 54.5%, and 45.4%, respectively. The proportions of osteoporosis at total femur, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were 6.2%, 25.6%, and 34.3%, respectively. Age, anthropometric index including height, weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI), parathyroid hormone, and physical activity were related to BMD, but the relationships were site specific. Total femur BMD was explained by age, weight, parathyroid hormone and intakes of carbohydrate and fruits. Femoral neck BMD was related to age, weight, parathyroid hormone and intakes of riboflavin and fruits. Lumbar spine BMD was associated with age, weight, milk and dairy products, calcium intake, and exercise. These results indicated that adequate intakes of milk and dairy products, fruits, carbohydrate, calcium, riboflavin and exercise as well as weight maintenance might play an important role in maintaining optimum bone health in Korean postmenopausal women.

8.Presumptive Role of Neutrophilic Oxidative Stress in Oxygen-induced Acute Lung Injury in Rats.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the role of neutrophilc oxidative stress in an O2-induced acute lung injury (ALI). METHODS: For 48 h, experimental rats were exposed to pure oxygen (normobaric hyperoxia) in a plastic cage. Forty-eight hours after O2 breathing, the rats were sacrificed and the parameters for ALI associated with neutrophilic oxidative stress were assessed. RESULTS: Normobaric pure oxygen induced ALI, which was quite similar to ARDS. The O2-induced neutrophilic oxidative stress was identified by confirming of the increase in lung myeloperoxidase, BAL neutrophils, malondialdehyde (MDA), cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) activity in the lung, histological changes and BAL cytospin morphology. CONCLUSION: In part, ALI-caused by oxygen is affected by neutrophils especially by the generation of free radicals.

9.Central Transposition of the Cephalic Vein in Patients with Brachiocephalic Arteriovenous Fistula and Cephalic Arch Stenosis.

PURPOSE: Our study aims to evaluate to evaluate clinical outcomes after cephalic vein transposition (CVT) to the axilla in patients with brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (BC-AVF) and cephalic arch stenosis (CAS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hospital records of 13 patients (median age, 61 years; males, 54%) who received CVT to the proximal basilic/axillary vein due to either dysfunction (n=2) or thrombosis (n=11) between January 2010 and February 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Operation was performed under local anesthesia in all cases. There was no technical failure. Concomitant inflow procedure (banding or aneurysmorrhaphy) was performed in 5 patients (38%). During follow-up (1 to 50 months, median 17 months), 3 patients died with functioning AVF and one was successfully transplanted. Two patients suffered from recurrent symptomatic stenosis of AVF and received percutaneous balloon angioplasty. Another 2 patients experienced AVF occlusion treated with interposition graft and manual fragmentation. Overall primary, assisted primary, and secondary patency rates were 77.5%, 92.3%, and 100% at 6 months and 66.1%, 92.3%, and 100% at 1 year, respectively. CONCLUSION: Although most patients presented with BC-AVF occlusion, technical success and access patency rates after CVT were favorable compared with historical data for interventional treatment. CVT should be considered as an appropriate option in selected patients with CAS.

10.Pulsed tissue Doppler imaging of the left ventricular septal mitral annulus in healthy dogs.

This study evaluated pulsed TDI variables including the isovolumic time interval and duration of the major wave in a population of large healthy dogs. Longitudinal myocardial motion at the septal mitral annulus was evaluated with pulsed TDI in 45 healthy adult dogs. Maximal myocardial velocities, isovolumic time intervals, and duration of the myocardial waves were measured. The correlation between time intervals and velocity variables was also investigated. The mean maximal systolic velocity was 6.92 +/- 1.78 cm/sec, the mean early diastolic velocity (Em) was 6.58 +/- 1.81 cm/sec, the mean late diastolic velocity (Am) was 5.10 +/- 2.00 cm/sec, the mean isovolumic contraction time (IVCT) was 53.61 +/- 95.13 msec, and the mean isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) was 26.74 +/- 57.24 msec. The early diastolic mitral inflow velocity (E)/Em ratio was 10.94 +/- 3.27 while the Em/Am ratio was 1.40 +/- 0.40. There was a negative correlation between Am duration and Am amplitude, and a positive correlation between the IVRT and Em/Am ratio (p < 0.05). The normal LV parameter using pulsed TDI method could be used as the reference range for identifying myocardial dysfunction in dogs.
