4.Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Skeletal Muscle Glycogen and Exercise Endurance in Rats with Chronic Heart Failure
Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2015;21(4):426-431
Objective To observe the effects of 8-week aerobic exercise on skeletal muscle glycogen content and exercise endurance and investigate the possible mechanism in rats with chronic heart failure. Methods 30 Sprague-Dawley rats were submitted to heart failure sedentary (H) group, heart failure traning (HT) group and sham operation (S) group. The heart failure model was established with coronary artery ligation. HT group performed an 8-week treadmill running. The skeletal muscle glycogen content was determined with anthracenone, exercise endurance with exhaust duration of graded exhausted exercise test, glucose uptake rate, activity of glycogen synthase (GS) and glycogen phosphorylase (GP) with radicisotope, protein expression of total GS, phospho-GS (p-GS), total GP and phospho-GP (p-GP) with Western Blotting. Correlation analysis was conducted between glycogen content and exhaust duration. Results The skeletal muscle glycogen, exhaust duration, glucose uptake rate, GS activity and p-GP protein reduced (P<0.05), while serum insulin, GP activity and p-GS protein raised (P<0.05) in the H group compared with those in the S group. The skeletal muscle glycogen, exhaust duration, glucose uptake rate, GS activity and p-GP protein increased (P<0.05), while serum insulin, GP activity and p-GS protein decreased (P<0.05) in the HT group compared with those in the H group. There was positive correlation between glycogen content and exhaust duration (P<0.05). Conclusion Prolonged aerobic exercise enhanced skeletal muscle glycogen content and exercise endurance in rats with chronic heart failure, which may be related to the improvement of insulin sensitivity, muscle glucose uptake, increase of glycogen synthesis and decrease of glycogen breakdown.

7. Progress in study on medicinal value of medicinal parts of Kochia scoparia
Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs 2015;46(23):3605-3610
All parts of Kochia scoparia have medicinal value. Through the literature retrieval of the chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and clinical application of fruits, seedlings, and roots of K. scoparia, the article has systematically sorted out the medicinal value of each part in K. scoparia. There are triterpenoid saponins and other active constituents with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antipruritus effects in the fruits and seedlings of K. scoparia roughly consistent, with the effect of clearing heat and removing dampness, expelling wind antipruritic in the traditional clinical use. All of fruits, seedlings, and roots of K. scoparia have the hypoglycemic effect, which relates to the saponins in K. scoparia. The study provides the theoretical basis and application basis for more effective utilization of the resources of K. scoparia, the further development of low toxicity, high efficiency, and little adverse reaction of anti in-flammation, antifungal, anti-allergy, and hypoglycemic natural medicine as well.

Journal of Clinical Pediatrics 2016;34(5):366-370
Objective To investigate the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on the expression of MMP-2 in hippocampus of neonatal rats after hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD), and the mechanism of its neuroprotective effect. Methods Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats of 7 days old were randomly divided into three groups (n?=?48 in each group): sham-operated group, HIBD group and EPO treated group, then each group was further divided into four subgroups (n?=?12) based on different time points following the injection of medication ( 6 h, 24 h, 3 d, 7 d). The expression of MMP-2 in hippocampus was determined by immunohistochemistry and real-time lfuorescent quantitative PCR method. Results Immunohistochemistry: MMP-2 has a small amount of expression in the hippocampus of the sham-operated group, and at each time point, there is no statistically signiifcant difference (P?>?0.05);The expression of MMP-2 in HIBD group and EPO group all show a trend of increase, and peaked at 7 d, the differences between each time point in two groups are statistically signiifcant (P?0.05);Compared with control group, the difference in each time point of the other two groups showed signiifcance (P?0.05) in addition to the 6 h point, and there is signiifcant difference at the 7 d point between EPO group and HIBD group (P?0.05). RT-qPCR:The gene expression of MMP-2 in control group presents a trend of increase, but there is no signiifcant difference at different time points (P?>?0.05). Gene expression in HIBD group at 24 h and 7 d points showed twin peaks, and the peak is higher at the 7 d point, but without difference (P?>?0.05). MMP-2 expression of EPO group presents a trend of increase, and differences are signiifcant between each time point (P?0.05);At each time point, the expression of MMP-2 mRNA in both HIBD group and EPO group is extremely high than that in sham-operated group (P<0.05). Compared with the HIBD group, the expression of MMP-2 mRNA at 24 h of EPO group decreased, but it is signiifcantly higher at the time of 7 d (P?0.05). Conclusion Erythropoietin may upregulate the expression of MMP-2 in the delayed phase of HIBD, which may be one of the mechanisms for protecting HIBD.
