Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2010;14(8):1437-1441
BACKGROUND: Local application of sustained-release antimicrobials serve as an adjuvant therapy of periodontitis, and the dosage form, medicine and carrier material have greatly developed. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the currant situation and progression of periodontal local sustained-release antimicrobials at home and abroad.METHODS: A computer-based online search of CNKI and Pubmed (1999-01/2009-10) was performed for the related articles about sustained-ralease antimicrobials, with the key words "periodontitis, treatment, medication, and sustained-ralease". The articles in the same field published recently or in authoritative journals were selected. A total of 143 articles were collected, and 40 related sustained-ralease antimicrobials were included.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Application of sustained-release antimicrobials is a well adjuvant therapy for some special clinical periodontitis. It is widely used due to its low dosage, long lasting-time and well target effect. The clinical application of sustained-ralease antimicrobials is promising along with the development of compound medicine and periodontal tissue regeneration.
2.Clinical outcome evaluation of selective laser trabeculoplasty as the initial therapy for primary open angle glaucoma
Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2014;32(2):163-167
Background Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is one of common therapies for early-stage primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).However,it always been used as a method of treating medically uncontrolled open angle glaucoma in China. So the assessment of efficacy of SLT as the initial therapy for POAG is still lack. Objective This clinical study was to compare the efficacy of SLT in early-stage POAG eyes with or without primary medical therapy. Methods A prospective non-randomized controlled study was designed.Sixty-five eyes of 37 patients with early-stage POAG were divided into without pre-treated group (30 eyes of 16 patients) and with pretreated group (35 eyes of 21 patients).SLT was performed on the inferior trabecular meshwork of 180° in all the patients aged 12-57 years old using a 532 nm frequency-doubled,Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with the pulse 3 ns,spot diameter 400 μm.The emitting energy was set from an initial energy of 0.6 mJ to decreased energy successively at 0.1 mJ interval till bubbles coming out.The following-up was 6 months.Primary outcome of SLT included the changes of intraocular pressure (IOP) and effective rate, and the secondary outcome included the perimetry and C/D value. The safety index was evaluated as the incidence of irritative symptom. Results After SLT 1 day to 6 months, the IOP was lower than that before SLT in all the patients (all at P<0.05).The IOP was (24.03± 3.76)mmHg and (19.18±3.86)mmHg respectively at preoperation and postoperative 1 month in without pretreated group, with a mean decreasing value of (4.85 ±4.31)mmHg,in with pretreated group, the IOP was (23.63±4.29)mmHg at preoperation and (17.07±4.15)mmHg at postoperative 1 month, with a mean difference of (6.28±3.57)mmHg,with a significant difference in the IOP lowing value between the two groups (P =0.045),but there were no significant differences in the IOP lowing value between without and with pretreated groups in 1 hour,1 day,3 months and 6 months after SLT (all at P>0.05).The effective rate was 75.00% and 76.67% in without and with pretreated groups respectively at the end of following-up (P =0.882).No obvious changes were seen in visual field and C/D value before and after SLT in both groups. Also,no serious complication was found in the patients during the following-up duration. Conclusions SLT has a good outcome in lowing-IOP for early stage POAG.There is no obvious impact to the clinical efficacy of SLT whether with or without the primary administration of anti-glaucomatous eye drops.Long-term effect of SLT remains to be observed.

Objective To explore the application value of thromboelastography(TEG) in perioperative evaluation of patients with antiplatelet therapy-associated cerebral hemorrhage. We aimed to investigate whether platelet transfu-sion, compared with standard care, reduced bleeding in patients with antiplatelet therapy-associated cerebral hemor-rhage. Methods A retrospective analysis of clinical data was conducted in 30 patients (12 patients receiving platelet transfusion) with antiplatelet therapy-associated basal ganglia hemorrhage who underwent emergency surgery. TEG was used to evaluate the intraoperative bleeding, postoperative bleeding and transfusion treatment. Results The routine co-agulation test was in the normal range in the two groups. However, TEG showed that the platelet function was exces-sively inhibited in patients with antiplatelet therapy before spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage (Platelet inhibition rate>90%). There were significant differences in the intraoperative blood loss (t=-3.998, P=0.008), total transfusion volume (Z=-3.245, P=0.001), postoperative hematoma volume (t=-2.909, P=0.043) and lead volume (t=-8.790, P=0.041) between two groups (P<0.05). One case from platelet transfusion group, and 4 cases from no-platelet transfusion group re-ceived a second surgical operation. However, the difference was not statistical significant ( P=0.317). Conclusion TEG can effectively assess the preoperative coagulation status in the patients with spontaneous cerebral haemorrhage after antiplatelet therapy. Platelet transfusion can reduce intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, decrease blood transfu-sion in the patients with antiplatelet therapy-associated cerebral hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) ATCC 33277 infection on expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in rat vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMC).
METHODSAn infection model of rat VSMC invaded by P. gingivalis was established in vitro. The mRNA of ICAM-1 was measured through reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
RESULTSCompared with the control group, an apparent and statistically significant increase in expression of ICAM-1 mRNA was observed after 8, 16, and 24 h in P. gingivals-infected rat VSMC (P<0.05). The expression reached its peak at 16 h. Statistically significant differences were observed in the 8 h group and in the other two experimental groups (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONInfection of P. gingivals in rat VSMC can cause increased expression of ICAM-1, which may have an important function in the progression of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVETo provide reference data on frequency and distribution of bone islands (BIs) and investigate their relationship with age, gender, and localization.
METHODSA population who received a pretreatment and at least one follow-up panoramic radiograph in the Department of Oral Radiology, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, were selected for this retrospective study. A sample population of 29,556 patients (12,824 males and 16,732 females) with different dental complaints and ages ranging from 8 to 80 years (mean age: 23.95 years) were included.
RESULTSIn the radiographic evaluation, BIs appeared as localized, well-defined, non-expansile, radiopaque masses which were round, elliptic, or irregular in shape. Their sizes varied from a few millimeters to about 2 cm in diameter. A total of 598 radiopacities were detected, and 545 patients of 29,556 patients (1.84%) had BIs. Among subjects with multiple lesions, 49 patients had 2 BIs and 2 patients had 3 BIs. The BIs had immense mandibular predilection, with presentation primarily in the premolar/molar region. The condition appeared to have no tendencies based on sex.
CONCLUSIONRecognition of BIs variation is significant in dental examinations.
