Autophagy is an important homeostatic cellular recycling mechanism responsible for degrading injured or dysfunctional cellular organelles and proteins in all living cells. Aging is a universal phenomenon characterized by progressive deterioration of cells and organs due to accumulation of macromolecular and organelle damage. Growing evidences indicate that the rate of autophagosome formation and maturation and the efficiency of autophagosome/lysosome fusion decline with age. Dysfunctional autophagy has also been observed in age-related diseases. Autophagy disruption resulted accumulation of mutated or misfolded proteins is the essential feature of neurodegenerative disorders. However, in cancers, fibroproliferative diseases or cardiovascular diseases, autophagy can play either a protective or destructive role in different types of disease, and even in different stages of the same disease. The review will discuss the cellular and molecular mechanisms of autophagy and its important role in the pathogenesis of aging and age-related diseases, and the ongoing drug discovery strategies for therapeutic intervention.

Chinese Pediatric Emergency Medicine 2008;15(2):116-118
Objective To investigate antirnierobial resistance of comlnon pathogenic bacteria isolated from children's respiratory tract in Beijng friendship Hospital during the period between January 2004 and December 2006.Methods Forty-nine strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae,fifty-five strains of Staphylococcus aureus and fifteen strains of Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus were isolated from children with community-acquired respiratory tract infeetion in pediatric department of Beijng Friendship Hospital.Kirby-Bauer agar dilution method Was used to determine the susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Results Ninety percent of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were resistant to erythromycin.Penicillin-non-susceptible streptococcus pneumoniae accounted for 10%,while 90% of which were multi-drug resistant. For Staphylococcus aureu strains, the resistant rates of ampicillin, penicillin and oxacfllin were 86%,82%,and 9% respectively, and serere multi-drug resistance was found.Eighty percent of the group A β-hemolytic streptococcus strains were resistant to erythromycin, however all remained sensitive to penicillin and ampicillin. Conclusion The antimicrobials resistant pathogenic bacteria isolated from children with respiratory tract infection have become a severe prdblem. The resistant rates of macrolides are high for Streptococcus and Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus.MeticiUin resistant staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)strains were found in the study.Severe multi-drug resistance was found.Non β-lactam antibiotics should be avoided when respiratory tract bacterial infection occurred in children.

Objective To investigate the replantation of complete severed fingertip when vein can't be repaired and only artery be repaired. Methods All 13 cases complete severed fingertips were replantated with only artery anastomosis but vein cannot be repaired.Low molecular weight heparin was applied to prevent blood clotting postoperation. Blood-letting by nail extraction or latero-incision were done in some cases. The survival fingers were observed. Results After 3-12 months followed-up,12 cases survived with satisfactory appearance and locomotion,2-PD of 2-7 mm,but 1 case was failed. Conclusion The replanted fingertip may survival with only artery anastomosis because of fewer tissue and faster recontruction of venous return. It would raise the survival rate of replanted fingertip by blood-letting by nail extraction or latero-incision according to the traumatic condition.

Objective To select and analyze the drug types for treatment of patients with diabetes in the older adults. Methods The clinical data including age, gender, disease duration, drugs (types and frequency) for 320 elderly cases with diabetes were retrospectivly analyzed Results With aging, duration of diabetes had been extended(P<0.05),but no difference between the sex ratio. The frequency of insulin (32.2%) and metformin (29.7%)were the highest in the selective therapy for senile diabetes patients. But other types of drugs such as alpha glycosidase inhibitor (19.4 %),sulfonylureas for promoting secrete (10.9 %) and thiazolidinedione (7.8 %) also occupied certain proportion. Conclusions The metformin has been widely applied for senile diabetes patients, and it is usually need to be in combination with other drugs and be paied more attention to monitoring in the whole process.

To analyze the polyps in the aspects of distribution, helicobacter pylori ( HP) infection and the use of proton pump inhibitors ( PPI) in different histological types of gastric polyps;to observe the morphosis under endos-copy histopathology and the surveillance situation in colonic polyps. The infection rates of HP in gastric hyperplasic polyps, inflammatory polyps and adenomatous polyps were 31.11%, 45.31% and 58.33%;the using rate of PPI among inflammatory polyps patients was higher. The main histopathological type of colonic polyps was adenomatous polyps;20 cases of colorectal polypectomy surveillance of 2 years had recurrence. The occurrence of gastric adeno-matous polyps may be related to HP infection;PPI had no obvious correlation with the pathological type of the gas-tric polyps. Colorectal adenoma should strengthen the surveillance colonoscopy of postpolypectomy.

Th17(T helper 17 cell), a newly discovered subset of T cells is associated with IL-23 and characterized by production of IL-17, the functions of which are distinct from those of Th1, Th2 and Treg subsets. The development of Th17 cells can be promoted by TGF-beta1, IL-6, and IL-23; but inhibited by IFN-gamma, IL-4 and Socs3. It is clear that Th17 cells have protective effects on body by facilitating the pro-inflammatory responses. On the other hand, the role of Th17 cells in the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases has been described.

The nuclear transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. The aberrant NRF2 signaling confers enhanced antioxidant capacity, which is linked to tumor progression and therapeutic resistance. The current study investigates the biological effects and molecular mechanism of tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3), a stress-induced protein, in regulating cell survival and apoptosis in lung cancer. This study first performed the RNA sequencing data analysis with 576 lung adenocarcinoma patients from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) database. The NRF2- antioxidant response element (ARE) signature was enriched in patients with high TRIB3 expression. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to confirm the effect of TRIB3 on the kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1 (KEAP1)-NRF2 pathway. 10.Research on continuous measurement of blood pressure via characteristic parameters of pulse wave.
Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2002;19(2):217-220
A new method for continuous measurement of blood pressure (BP) via selecting characteristic parameters of pulse wave pertinent to BP is presented in this paper. In order to validate the precision of the measurement, we have developed a Tonometer. The results of the instrument based on this method are precise if the subjects are at rest. This instrument could be used for BP monitoring of critically ill patients and in common medical researches; it might be applied to BP monitoring during spaceflight and in daily life after movement artifact being restrained.
