Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupoint injection with BCG-polysaccharide nucleic acid (BCG-PSN) in treating bronchial asthma. Method Seventy-two patients with bronchial asthma were randomized into an acupoint injection group and a muscular injection group, 36 cases in each group. The acupoint injection group was intervened by acupoint injection with BCG-PSN to Zusanli (ST36) and Dingchuan (EX-B1) alternately, 1 mL for two points in total each time; the muscular injection group was intervened by muscular injection at the same dose and frequency, twice a week, for successive 3 months. The pulmonary function and asthma control test (ACT) were estimated before and after intervention and during March of the next year. Result After intervention, the FEV1 values were (80.97±2.31)% and (80.78±2.56)% respectively in the acupoint injection group and muscular injection group, and PEF values were (6.50±0.21)L/s and (6.48±0.25)L/s, and the between-group differences were statistically insignificant (P>0.05). The ACT score was (23.02±1.03) in the acupoint injection group, significantly better than (22.40±2.04) in the muscular injection group (P<0.05). The follow-up study showed that the ACT score in the acupoint injection group was superior to that in the muscular injection group (P<0.05). Conclusion Acupoint injection and muscular injection with BCG-PSN can equally improve the pulmonary function in bronchial asthma, while the acupoint injection can produce a more significant effect than muscular injection in improving ACT.

Objective To observe and compare the regulating effect between electroacupuncture and sham electroacupuncture on the symptoms of menopausal transition and levels of estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH), for evaluating the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture in mitigating the relevant symptoms of menopausal transition. Method Thirty eligible subjects with menopausal transition were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 15 cases in each group. The treatment group was intervened by electroacupuncture at the ordinary acupoints, while the control group was by electroacupuncture at non-meridian points. The E2, FSH, and LH contents were detected after intervention and at the 20th week during the follow-up study, the flush score and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) were evaluated respectively after 4-week and 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study, and the safety of electroacupuncture was also estimated.Result The flush and MRS scores were significantly changed after 4-week and 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study in both groups compared to that before the treatment in the same group (P<0.01,P<0.05). There was a significant difference in comparing the changes of MRS score after 8-week treatment between the two groups (P<0.01). There were significant differences in comparing the changes of flushing scores between the two groups after 8-week treatment and at the 20th week and 32nd week during the follow-up study (P<0.01). The serum levels of E2, FSH, and LH were significantly changed in the treatment group after 8-week treatment (P<0.05). There were significant differences in comparing the changes of FSH and LH levels between the two groups after 8-week treatment (P<0.05). The difference in comparing the change of serum E2 level between the two groups at the 20th week during the follow-up study was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Electroacupuncture can improve the flushing intensity and produce a benign regulation on the relevant hormone levels in menopausal transition, though this regulation is insignificant when the treatment terminates.

Shanghai Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion 2016;(1):101-104
Facial neuritis is clinically a common disease. Electroacupuncture has a positive effect on it and has been widely applied clinically, but how to select electroacupuncture waveform parameters, and whether and how to use electroacupuncture in the acute stage are still inconclusive. Through clinical practice and study, the authors found that the role of electroacupuncture was effectively played and the recover from the disease was quickened by combining the pathological characteristics of facial neuritis in different stages and adjusting the electroacupuncture protocol at a proper time. That is, during the acute stage when the disease is progressing, electroacupuncture is not used or used with sparse-dense waves for anti-inflammation and analgesia; during the convalescent stage, interrupted waves are used to excite the muscles and sparse waves are used to excite the motor neurons after the recovery of facial muscle excitability; during the sequela stage, sparse waves are used to maintain the therapeutic effect or dense waves to relieve facial spasm.

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common abdominal postoperative complication of surgery as well as obstetrics and gynecology. There is a lack of an effective method of modern medicine due to its complex pathophysiological mechanism and the postoperative physiological disorder of patient. Acupuncture has remarkable regulatory effects on gastrointestinal function. Some clinical studies indicated that acupuncture was an effective method to treat POI, which could reduce the duration of POI and the treatment costs of patients in hospital. However, the mechanism and law of acupuncture on treating POI is still unclear. Some clinical studies indicated that the regulatory effect of acupuncture on the gastrointestinal motility was associated with its regulation of the autonomic nerve system and immune system. Based on its effect on regulating autonomic nerve system and immune system, acupuncture would be a potential and safe treatment for POI.

ObjectiveTo investigate safety and efficacy of one-stage pedicle screw fixation plus 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction in treatment of severe thoracolumbar burst fractures.MethodsThe study reviewed 11 patients (8 males and 3 females, at age range of 19-59 years, mean 34.4 years) with severe thoracolumbar burst fracture, who underwent one-stage posterior pedicle screw fixation, 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction. The injury location was at T12 in one patient, at L1 in three, at L2 in two, at L3 in three and at L4 in two. According to AO classification, all patients were with type A 3.3 fractures. McCormack load score was 7-9 points ( average 8.2 points). Based on the Frankel' s scale, the spinal cord function was classified as grade A in one patient, grade B in one, grade C in five and grade D in four. ResultsAll the operations accomplished successfully, with operation duration for 3.5-4.5 hours ( mean 4.1 hours) , blood loss for 900-2 800 ml ( mean 1 750 ml) and allogeneic blood transfusion for 400-1 200 ml ( average 760 ml). There was no complication either during or after operation. The loss rate of the anterior vertebrae column height was 48% -85% ( average 64.2% )before operation and recovered to 95% -100% (average 98.6% ) of the normal. The kyphotic Cobb angle was at -12°-35 ° ( average 12.1 ° ) before operation and recovered to - 30°-7 ° ( average - 8.1 ° ) after operation. The spinal canal stenosis rate was improved remarkably. The patients were followed up for 10-18 months (average 14. 5 months), which showed solid bone fusion, with no implant failure. The spinal cord function was improved Ⅰ to Ⅲ degrees in all patients except for one patient at grade A. One patient had mild lower back pain.ConclusionsOne-stage pedicle screw fixation plus 360° spinal canal decompression and reconstruction is a good alternative for severe thoracolumbar burst fracture, but it is essential for choosing strictly the surgical indications.

Objective To study the effects of early application of integrated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)and western medicine and massage on the incidence and severity of pneumonia and prognosis in the therapeutic course of infants with cytomegalovirus(CMV)infection infantile cholestatic hepatopathy(ICH)accompanied by gastric volvulus(GV). Methods A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted. 120 infants 1-6 months old with CMV infection ICH and complicated with GV inpatients were divided into treatment group and control group (each,60 cases). The TCM Lidanheji(consisting of artemisiae capillaris 30 g,weeping forsythia 30 g,Chinese goldthread 5 g,prepared rhubarb 5 g,unpeeled root of herbaceous peony 30 g,cassia 5 g,fruit of citron or trifoliate orange 10 g,large-headed atractylodes 10 g,fruit of Chinese magnoliavine 10 g,pangolin scale 3 g and licorice root 5 g)for oral administration or enema and ganciclovir intravenous injection were given to both groups. In the control group, based on the above treatment, postural and diet therapy, prokinetics(domperidone)were given in cases with GV. The massage treatment was only applied for treatment of GV in treatment group. The pneumonia in both groups was treated in accord to the conventional diagnosis and treatment for infantile pneumonia, bronchiolitis, severe pneumonia and the guide and management of infantile community acquired pneumonia. The total number of cases with pneumonia and its severity occurring before and after treatment in the course of the disease, the clinical therapeutic effects of ICH, GV and infantile pneumonia, the clinical physical signs, biochemical indexes and the time of hospitalization were observed and compared between the two groups. Results Compared with control group, after treatment the curative rate and total effective rate of ICH,GV,infant pneumonia in treatment group were significantly higher〔the curative rate of ICH:83.05%(49/59)vs. 71.93%(41/57),total effective rate:96.61%(57/59)vs. 91.23%(52/57);the curative rate of GV:72.88%(43/59)vs. 51.79%(29/56),total effective rate:96.61%(57/59)vs. 78.57%(44/56);the curative rate of infant pneumonia:81.08%(30/37)vs. 67.44%(29/43),total effective rate:100%(37/37)vs. 100%(43/43),P<0.05 or P<0.01〕. In the treatment group, the total number of cases with pneumonia occurring in the therapeutic course and the incidence of severe pneumonia were significantly less than those in the control group〔the occurrence of pneumonia:12 cases vs. 21 cases, the incidence of severe pneumonia:16.67%(2/12) vs. 42.86%(9/21),P<0.05 or P<0.01〕. The enlargement of liver and spleen, the level of total bilirubin(TBil), direct bilirubin(DBil),total bile acids(TBA)and alanine aminotransferase(ALT)in two groups after treatment were significantly lower than those before treatment, the changes being more marked in treatment group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The time of stay in hospital in treatment group was remarkably shortened(days:21.32±3.26 vs. 27.38±6.09, P<0.05). Conclusion Early interference with combined TCM and western medicine and massage for treatment of infants with CMV infection ICH accompanied by GV can significantly decrease the incidence of pneumonia and its severity occurring in the disease course, therefore this therapeutic method is beneficial to the treatment and prognosis of infants with CMV infection ICH.
