Chinese Journal of Ultrasonography 2003;0(10):-
Objective To evaluate the diagnosing and typing value of ultrasonography in adult congenital ureter cysts. Methods Ultrasonography findings were depicted of 29 cases with adult congenital ureter cysts confirmed by surgical and pathological examinations. Results In 29 cases of congenital ureter cyst, 14 occurred in right lateral, 12 in left lateral, and 3 in bilateral, totally being 32 cysts. The largest size of the cyst in diameter was (5.2) cm, and the smallest was (0.4) cm. Twenty-eight cases was diagnosed correctly by ultrasonography,in which the accuracy was (96.6)%(28/29). According to the sonographic patterns of size, shape, periodical change,1 case hydronephrosis, surgical and pathological results, 32 adult ureter cysts were divided into four types: type Ⅰ, papillary(12); type Ⅱ, round or ellipse(9);type Ⅲ, semilunar(4);and type Ⅳ, oblate(7). Conclusions Ultrasonographic appearance of adult ureter cyst is specific, and ultrasonography is of great value.

Objective To explore the value of virtual touch tissue quantification (VTQ) elastography and its influencing factors in identifying benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted in 210 cases of 240 thyroid nodules.Their images, including 2D ultrasound, color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and VTQ elastography, were reviewed, and the scanning view, the maximum diameter of the nodule, inside blood flow, calcifications and its depth beneath the skin were recorded. The value of shear wave velocity(SWV) in identifying benign and malignant thyroid nodules was calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The influences of the maximum diameter of the nodules, calcifications, internal blood flow, the depth beneath skin and scanning views as well as type of pathology on the value of SWV were analyzed using multiple linear regressions (MLR).Results The sensitivity and specificity of VTQ in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules was 74.8% and 73.4%,respectively,and the area under ROC curve was 0.799.MLR indicated that the maximum diameter of the nodule, the type of pathology and internal blood flow were correlated with the SWV value (P <0.05),of which, the type of pathology was the important factor (standardized coefficient was-0.312).Microcalcifications,the depth of the nodules located and the scanning surface were not significantly related to SWV value (P >0.05).Conclusions VTQ can quantitatively provide the information on the hardness of thyroid tissue, which is of a definite value in the differential diagnosis of the nodules. The pathology of the nodule, its internal blood flow and maximum diameter are the factors that affect the value of SWV,and not its depth, scanning views and microcalcifications.

Objective To invesigate the value of contrast-enhanced spiral CT scan in diagnosing renal pelvic carcinoma. Methods All 35 cases with renal pelvic carcinoma confirmed by surgical pathology underwent plain and contrast-enhanced (including 4 phases) spiral CT scans before operation.CT data were reviewed retrospectively in comparison with surgical and patholgical results. Results CT findings of renal carcinoma could be classified into 3 types:type Ⅰ,the lesions limited within the renal pelvis in 25 cases;thype Ⅱ,the lesions were out of the renal pelvis and had indefinable margins with the renal parenchyma in 6 cases;type Ⅲ ,only showed the pelvic wall thickened with hydronephrosis in 4 cases. On contrast-enhanced CT scan, inhomogeneous enhancement of the lesions was presented in cortical phase, the intensity of enhancement was not obviously changed in 13 cases in parenchymal and excretion phases, but the lesions were still hypointense in comparison with renal parenchyma,14 cases demonstrated inhomogeneous enhancement of the lesions in delayed phase. Conclusion Contrast-enhanced spiral CT scanning is valuable in diagnosing renal pelvic carcinoma and renal delayed phase should be emphasized.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2012;37(9):871-875
OBJECTIVE:
To determine the biological activity of ellagic acid extracted from gallnut against nasopharyngeal carcinoma and its molecular mechanism.
METHODS:
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma 5-8F cells were treated with 2, 4, 6 μg/mL ellagic acid for 48 h in vitro. The cell proliferation and cell apoptosis were analyzed by MTT and Hoechst33258 stain. The cell cycle and protein expression were measured by flow cytometry and Western blot.
RESULTS:
Ellagic acid inhibited the proliferation of 5-8F cells. The inhibition rates were (29.35±4.95)%, (53.32 ±4.44)% and ( 61.75 + 6.93)%, respectively, with significant difference from the control group (P<0.01). S phase cells in the experimental groups were (25.47±0.74)%, (28.08±1.41)% and (35.49±0.66)%, respectively, with significant difference (P<0.01) from the control group (21.26±0.70)%. Cells in the experimental groups showed nuclear pyknosis, karyorrhexis and poptotic cell morphology. The expression of COX-2 and stathmin in 5-8F cells was down-regulated with increased drug concentration.
CONCLUSION
Ellagic acid extracted from gallnut has activity against nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells, and its mechanism may be related to down-regulated expression of COX-2 and stathmin.
