Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is considered as the standard treatment for acid-related disorders. However, its long-term use, especially in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, would cause potential risks, such as hypergastrinemia along with reduced gastric acidity, hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells (ECL), gastric neoplasms, rebound gastric acid hypersecretion when PPI treatment is stopped, increased oxyntic gastritis in patients with H. pylori infection, and the possible stimulation of growth of non-gastric tumours due to hypergastrinaemia. Each of these trends has led to numerous studies and evaluations on the potential risk-benefit ratio of the long-term use of PPIs, and countermeasures are being proposed for these problems.

Objective: To further study the effects of As 2 O 3 in various concentrations on the esophageal carcinoma cell line. Methods: The esophageal malignant transformed epithelial cells (SHEEC1) were induced by HPV18 in synergy with TPA in our laboratory. The cells cultured in flask and 24 wells plate were treated by As 2 O 3 with concentrations of 1, 3 and 5 ?mol/L for 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 h respectively. The morphologic changes of cells were observed under election microscopy. The mitotic index (MI) of living cells was calculated by phase contrast microscopy and the cells with TdR uptake were examined by autoradiography. The proliferative index (PI) and apoptotic index (AI) were assayed by flow cytometry. Results: A low dosage of As 2 O 3 (1.0 ?mol/L) enhancing the protiferative rate of SHEEC1 was demonstrated with TdR uptake, MI and PI increased. The high AI and low PI were found in the high concentrations (3 and 5 ?mol/L)of As 2 O 3 . The morphological changes of apoptosis and necrosis were found in 24 h after As 2 O 3 in high concentrations (3 and 5 ?mol/L) administrated. Conclusion: The effects of As 2 O 3 in various concentrations are different. Low concentration of As 2 O 3 promotes the proliferation of the esophageal carcinoma cells by increment of DNA synthesis. In high concentration of As 2 O 3 apoptosis and necrosis are induced.

Objective: To investigate the antitumor effects of arsenic trioxide (As 2 O 3 ) on solid tumor in vivo , the transplanted hepatic carcinoma of mice were treated with various dosages of As 2 O 3 . Methods: After 50 mice were injected intraperitoneally with 0,2, 4, 6, 8 ?mol/g As 2 O 3 respectively for observation of acute toxicity, 1, 2, 3 ?mol/g were selected for this experiment. Eighty mice were transplanted with hepatic carcinoma cells (1.5?10 6 cells/each side) into both subaxillae. As 2 O 3 in 0, 1, 2 and 3 ?mol/g were injected into right subaxilla respectively once every day for 10 days. At the 30th day after transplanted hepatic carcinoma cell, mice were killed and the size of solid tumors was measured. The chronic cytotoxicity of As 2 O 3 was observed in these mice. Results: In right subaxillae tumors, which were injected directly with As 2 O 3 , were apparent smaller than that in the left ( P

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2006;4(2):71-74,封二
Objective: The present study is to investigate the mechanism of electro-acupuncture in preventing and treating lumbar intervertebral disk displacement. Methods: Seventy-five Sprauge-Dawley rats were used to establish the models of lumbar intervertebral disk displacement by operation, and divided into five groups including electro-acupuncture group, western medicine group, acupuncture plus medicine group, model group and normal control group, then they were treated with corresponding therapeutic method. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA in the lumbar intervertebral disk tissues of rats was detected by RT-PCR. Results: The expression of iNOS mRNA in the lumbar intervertebral disk tissues of rats in model group was compared with that in normal control group, the significant difference was found (P<0.01); While the expressions of iNOS mRNA in the lumbar intervertebral disk tissues of rats in electro-acupuncture group, western drug group and acupuncture plus medicine group were all inhibited, and compared with the model group, the significant differences were also found (P<0.01). Conclusion: Electro-acupuncture could inhibit the expression of iNOS mRNA in the lumbar intervertebral disk tissue.

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2004;2(2):58-60
Recurrent low back pain and reflex sciatica of lower limbs are the two leading symptoms of prolapsed lumbar intervertebral disc, which can be confirmed in the history, symptoms, signs and imaging examination such as CT scan and MRI. It should be differentiated from those conditions characterized by lumbago and/or possible sciatica. Tuina was performed mostly on the Bladder Meridian,Gallbladder Meridian and Governor Vessel, as well as their acupoints such as Jiaji (Ex-B 2) points,Shenshu (BL 23), Dachangshu (BL 25), Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Huantiao (GB 30), Weizhong (BL 40),Chengshan (BL 57), Yanglingquan (GB 34) and Ashi points. Thumb-massaging manipulation, rolling manipulation, pulling manipulation, pressing manipulation, kneading manipulation and grasping manipulation are often performed.

Objective To investigate the levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein 4 (MCP-4), macrophage derived chemokine (MDC) and cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs) in serum of children with mycoplasma pneumonia (MP). Methods Serum levels of MCP-4, MDC and CysLTs measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay were analyzed in 60 children with MP including 36 children with wheezing (MP wheezing group) and 24 children without wheezing (MP non-wheezing group), 30 children with pneumonia but not infected with mycoplasma pneumonia (NMP group), 35 children with acute asthma exacerbation (asthma group), and 25 health children (control group). Results Serum levels of MCP-4, CysLTs and MDC were found markedly elevated in asthma group. The serum levels of MCP-4 and MDC showed signiifcant difference between each of the groups (all P<0.01) except that between non-wheezing group and NMP group (P>0.05). As for serum level of CysLTs, no signiifcant differences were found between asthma group and MP wheezing group, NMP group and MP-non-wheezing group (all P>0.05). The serum levels of MCP-4, MCD and CysLTs in children with MP were positively correlated with one another. Conclusions MCP-4, MDC and CysLTs play important roles in pathogenesis of MP and are the major causes of wheezing in MP.
