Cancer Research and Clinic 2000;0(06):-
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of calcium(Ca)and magnesium(Mg)infusions in pre- vention of oxaliplatin-induced acute neurotoxicity. Methods Fourty-two patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma were eligible for the study:21 were assigned to the Ca/Mg ann and 21 to the control arm.The Ca/ Mg arm and the control arm were comparable for patients'characteristics.Chemotherapy regimen were al- most the same in both arms.Chemotherapy regimen consisted of oxaliplatin 130 mg/m~2 on day 1,given as a 3-hour infusion in 500 ml of 5% glucose, concurrent with rahitrexed 3 mg/m~2 as a 15-minute intravenous (Ⅳ)infusion or calcium folinate(CF)200 mg?m~(-2)?d~(-1),days 1~5,5-Fluorouracil(5-Fu)500 mg?m~(-2)?d~(-1),days 1~5.Therapy was repeated every 3 weeks. The treatment consisted of Ca gluconate and Mg sulfate,1 g each, delivered i.v.over 15 min just before the oxaliplatin infusion and repeated at the same dose after the comple- tion of the oxaliplatin infusion.A specific neurotoxicity scale was used for oxaliplatin-related neurotoxicity. Results Ten patients(47.62%)had acute neurotoxicity in the Ca/Mg arm compared with 19 patients (90.48%)in the control arm(P0.05).Conclusion Ca/Mg infusions seem to reduce incidence and intensity of oxaliplatin-induced acute neurotoxicity, and they do not reduce the clinical activity of oxaliplatin, but dosage and administration schedule could be optimized.

Objective To investigate the fluctuation of the iodine deficiency disorders(IDD) through continuous monitoring on it. Methods During 2005-2008, 10 monitoring countis (city, district) of IDD were selected in Jiangxi Province. Five townships were selected in each monitoring county, one school was selected in each townships, and 40 students in 8-10 years old from each school were selected to inspect their thyroid glands and determined the idodine content of salts from their home. Among the 40 students, 20 of which were selected to determine the intelligence quotient(IQ) and 6 of which were selected to determine urine iodine. Thirty pregnant women were also selected to determine the urine iodine in each monitoring county. Twenty students of 5th grade in each school and 5 housewives living nearby the school were selected to carry out the questionnaire survey of health education about IDD. Results Monitoring results showed the average goiter rote of 8-10 years old students was between 2.00% and 4.60% during 2005-2008. The rate of IQ of the students higher than 90 was all above 76% each year. The median of urine iodine of students and pregnant women was higher than 100 μg/L, and the proportion of people whose urine iodine content was lower than 50 μg/L was below 4% each year. The rate of inhabitant taking qualified idodine salt wasn't lower than 95%. The pass rate of the questionnaire survey of health education about IDD was between 11.67% and 43.50% in students and 92.50%-99.60% in housewives. Conclusions The situation of iodine deficiency in Jiangxi Province has been greatly improved, reaching the standard of eliminating IDD.

Objective To explore the influencing factors of high risk osteoporosis (OP) population. Methods Using multi-stage cluster sampling method, 1 district was selected from each of the 6 cities randomly, then 3 communities were selected from each district randomly. Questionnaire investigation and physical examination were applied to community residents aged 40-69 years old. The questionnaire mainly included basic information, OP risk assessment (using the 1 minute test method developed by the International OP Foundation), health status and lifestyle information (recent 12 months). The relationship between high-risk groups and influencing factors was analyzed by unconditional logistic regression. Results Totally 6577 valid questionnaires were collected, 2069 were male (31.46%) and 4508 were female (68.54%). A total of 166 cases (2.52%) were found as self-reported OP patients at the age of 40-69, self-reported rate of male (1.55%) was lower than that of female (2.97%) (χ2=11.719, P<0.01), the rate was higher among people aged 60-69 years than people aged 40-49 (χ2=44.766, P<0.01);3400 cases (52.28%) were found as high-risk individuals, there were more male at higher risk than female (OR=1.845). Among different age groups, the 50-59 and 60-69 years age groups had more high risk people than that of 40-49 years group (with OR=2.171 and OR=2.854 respectively). Comparative analysis was also conducted for the following factors: degree of education [college or above (OR=0.517) compared with primary school or junior middle school], occupation [compared with civil servants, technical management personnel (OR=2.289), business services (OR=2.224), farming/forestry/fishing (OR=2.258) and production/transportation staff (OR=2.552)], self-reported history of chronic disease (OR=1.596), fracture (OR=4.061), body pain (OR=2.286) and foot cramps (OR=1.923), as well as calcium/vitamin D intake (OR=1.357), increased sunlight (OR=1.256), daily walking steps>5000 (OR=1.336) and BMI>24.00 (OR=1.322), they were all related to a increased proportion of high risk population. Conclusion The proportion of OP high-risk groups is higher among people aged 40-69. Gender, age, cultural level, occupation, bad health status and lifestyle changes are closely related to higher OP risk. Community residents OP screening should be continued to further study the risk factors of OP.
