OBJECTIVETo summary the characteristics of cervicothoracic junction (C7T1) fracture-dislocation,and explore the surgical treatment of combined anterior-posterior procedure.
METHODSFrom January 2005 to March 2010,8 cases of cervicothoracic junction (C7T1) fracture-dislocation were treated by stage I operation through anterior and posterior approacheg, supplemented by non-structural bone graft. All patients were male with a mean age of 45.0 years old ranging from 32 to 68 years. Six cases were diagnosed clearly by CT scan but with normal cervical spine X-ray film at admission. According to AO classification, 4 cases were of type B, 4 cases of type C, with unilateral locked articular process in 2 cases, bilateral in 2 cases. Preoperative MRI showed intervertebral disc injury in 6 cases.
RESULTSThe average operation time was 246.3 min ranging from 150 to 320 min. The blood loss was with an average of 307.5 ml (150 to 600 ml). One patient got hoarseness but recovered without special treatment 6 months later; No other complications happened. One patient of preoperative Frankel grade A died, the remaining patients were followed up from 12 to 63 months (38.6 months in average). These fracture-dislocations were completely reduction after operation, healed with bony union 12 months later, and no pseudoarthrosis. The function of the spinal cord improved obviously at the final follow-up, 1 patient of preoperative grade A had died, and the spinal cord function of the other one had no significant changes, the 2 cases of grade B recovered to C and D respectively, 1case recovered from grade C to D, and 3 case recovered from D to E.
CONCLUSIONCervicothoracic junction (C7T1) fracture-dislocation is a rare clinical spine trauma, and missed easily. The CT is a necessary complement to these patients highly suspected C7T1 fracture-dislocation but with negative cervical spine X-ray film. The patients diagnosed clearly could receive stage I operation of anterior and posterior approaches, supplemented with non-structural bone graft.

Forest musk deer is one of the large-scale farming musk deer animals with the largest population at the same time. The male musk deer can secrete valuable medicines, which has high medicinal and economic value. Due to the loss of habitat and indiscriminate hunting, the numbers of wild population specie and the distribution have been drastically reduced. Therefore, in-depth understanding of the molecular genetics progress of forest musk deer will pave a way for musk deer protection and breeding. In this review, the progress associated with the molecular marker, genetic classification, artificial breeding, musk secretion and disease in past decades were reviewed, in order to provide a theoretical basis for subsequent molecular genetic researches in forest musk deer.

Objective To investigate the role of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) of hippocampal neurons in process of hydrogen-rich saline attenuating global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Methods Seventy-two male Sprague Dawley rats, weighing 250-300 g,were randomly divided into six groups ( n =12 each):sham operation group (group S),cerebral ischemia-reperfusion group (group IR),normal saline group (group NS),hydrogen-rich saline group (group H),atractyloside group (group A) and hydrogen-rich saline + atractyloside group (group HA).Global cerebral I/R injury was produced by four-vessel occlusion method.Bilateral vertebral arteries were cauterized. Then bilateral common carotid arteries were occluded for 15min and followed by reperfusion. In groups H and HA,hydrogen-rich saline 5 ml/kg was injected intraperitoneally immediately after reperfusion, while equal volume of normal saline was injected in the other four groups. The rats in groups A and HA received intracerebroventricular injection of atractyloside 15 μl 10 min before reperfusion, while groups NS and H received intracerebroventricular injection of equal volume of normal saline. After the neurological behavior was evaluated at 24 h of reperfusion,8 rats in each group were sacrificed and the hippocampi were immediately isolated and homogenized followed by density gradient centrifugation. The opening degree of mPTP was assayed with spectrophotometry and the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was detected with Rhodamine 123 method.Four rats in each group were killed at 72 h of reperfusion and the brains were removed for microscopic examination of the area CA1 of the hippocampus and determination of the number of normal pyramidal neurons. Results Compared with group S,the neurological behavior was compromised,MMP was decreased and mPTP opening degree was enhanced in the other five groups ( P < 0.05).The neurological behavior was better,MMP was increased and mPTP opening degree was decreased in groups H and HA as compared with group IR ( P < 0.05).Compared with group H,the neurological behavior was compromised,MMP was decreased and mPTP opening degree was enhanced in group HA ( P < 0.05).Compared with group IR,the number of normal pyramidal neurons at 72 h of reperfusion in the CA1 region of the hippocampus was higher in group HA ( P <0.05).The injury of the CA1 region of the hippocampus at 72 h of reperfusion was attenuated in group H as compared with groups IR,NS,A and HA.Conclusion Hydrogen-rich saline can attenuate global cerebral I/R injury throngh inhibiting the mPTP opening and reducing the dissipation of MMP,thus maintaining the mitochondrial function.

Objective: To explore the expression of myocardial levels of connexin 43(Cx43), Cx40 in experimental dog model of sympathomimetic atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: 15 mongrels dogs were randomly divided into 3 groups: Control group, Rapid atrium pacing (RAP) group and RAP+isoprenaline (ISO) perfusion group. n=5 in each group. The hearts were taken to establish in vitro langendorff cardiac perfusion model. Atrial effective refractory period (AERP) and AF inducing rate were tested;intracellular expression and distribution of nerve growth factor (NGF) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) were examined by immunohistochemistry, total protein contents of Cx43 and Cx40 were measured by Western blot analysis, mitochondria morphology was observed by transmission electron microscope and mitochondria reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was detected by fluorescent colorimetric method. Results: AERP was similar between Control group and RAP group (166±5.1) ms vs (160±3.2) ms which cannot induce AF; while it was shortened in RAP+ISO group (148±3.7) ms, P<0.05 which may successfully induce AF.Compared with Control group, mitochondria was slightly swollen in RAP group and the matrix was intact, while mitochondria was obviously swollen in RAP+ISO group and part of matrix was transparent; total protein contents of Cx43 and Cx40 were lower in both RAP group and RAP+ISO group, P<0.05; in addition, they were even lower in RAP+ISO group than RAP group, P<0.05. Compared with Control group and RAP group, RAP+ISO group had increased expression and distribution of NGF, TH and mitochondria ROS generation, P<0.05; NGF, TH and ROS in RAP group were higher than Control group, P<0.05. Conclusion: Sympathetic AF has been related to the contents and changes of myocardial levels of CX43 and Cx40; sympathetic nerve might trigger AF by oxidative stress induced down-regulation of myocardial CX43 and Cx40 in experimental dog model.

Objective To measure the expression of CC chemokine ligand 18(CCL18)in cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) tissues, and to explore its clinical significance, as well as relationship with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ki67 antigen expressions. Methods Immunohistochemistry was performed to measure CCL18, VEGF and Ki67 expressions in 58 paraffin?embedded CMM tissue specimens, as well as CCL18 expression in 20 paraffin?embedded pigmented nevus specimens, and immunofluorescence assay to confirm the expression of CCL18 in fresh CMM tissue specimens. Correlations of CCL18 expression with CMM clinicopathologic features, VEGF and Ki67 expressions were analyzed. Results CCL18 was detected in 49 (84.48%) of 58 paraffin?embedded CMM specimens, but in none of the 20 paraffin?embedded pigmented nevus specimens, with a significant difference in the positive rate of CCL18 between the CMM group and pigmented nevus group(χ2=45.46, P<0.01). The expression of CCL18 in paraffin?embedded CMM tissues was positively correlated with Clark′s level and Breslow thickness of CMM (rs = 0.609, 0.644 respectively, both P < 0.01), and was significantly different between ulcerated and non?ulcerated CMM(P<0.05), as well as between patients with and without lymphatic metastasis(P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the expression of CCL18 among patients of different age, gender, or between acral and non?acral CMM(all P>0.05). In addition, the expression of CCL18 in CMM tissues was positively correlated with that of VEGF(rs = 0.727, P < 0.05), but unrelated to that of Ki67(P > 0.05). Immunofluorescence assay showed CCL18 expression in the cytoplasm of tumor cells in CMM tissues. Conclusion CCL18 is highly expressed in CMM tissues, and may be involved in tumor invasion and metastasis.

Objective To prove the interaction between hepatitis virus C(HCV)nonstruetural protein 4A(HCV NS4A)and calcium modulating cyclophilin tigand(CAML)with yeast-two hybrid- ization and coimmunoprecipitation. Methods The gene encoding CAML was cloned, and subcloned into the yeast expression vector pGADT7 and eucell expression vector pcDNA3.1/His-A.The back- cross test between HCV NS4A and CAML was performed in yeast cells. After that, the pCMV-Myc/ NS4A plasmid and pcDNA3.1/His-A-CAML plasmid were co transfected into 293 cells and, then, coimmunoprecipitation and Western blot were performed. Results The gene encoding CAML was cloned sucessfully, and then the gene was subcloned into yeast expression vectors,pGADT7.After the interaction between NS4A and CAML was ensured in yeast cells, the eukaryotic expression vec- tors of NS4A and CAML were constructed and their interaction was ensured again by Co-immunopre- cipitation. Conclusions The interaction between HCV NS4A and CAML is proved.CAML is one of the proteins involved in Ca~(2+)signaling,which suggests that the interaction of HCV NS4A and CAML may be a new clue of the chronic mechanism of HCV infection.Future studies will be required to de- fine the physiologic significance of this interaction.
