OBJECTIVETo study the blood enriching effects of Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba, paeoniflorin and albiflorin on mouse model of blood deficiency caused by γ-ray radiation.
METHODBuild mouse model of blood deficiency induced by γ-ray radiation. Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba were given during modeling. The amount of WBC was detected af- ter the treatment. Based on the result of WBC and paeoniflorin content, albiflorin content in Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba, the same model and the same method were used to comparatively study the effect of blood enriching of paeoniflorin and albiflorin.
RESULTOn the 7th day, the amount of WBC in model mice treated with 2 g x kg(-1) Paeoniae Radix Alba and 2 g x kg(-1) Paeoniae Radix Rubra significantly increased compared with that of model group (P < 0.05). In another experiment with the same model, the amount of WBC in model mice treated with 120 mg x kg(-1) paeoflorin and 120 mg x kg(-1) albiflorin significantly increased (P < 0.05) compared with that of model group on the 7th day. On the 10th day, the amount of WBC in rats treated with 120 mg x kg(-1) paeoflorin increased significantly (P < 0.05) compared with that of model group. Compared with the same dose of paeoniflorin, the amount of WBC in mice treated with albiflorin had no significant difference.
CONCLUSIONAll Paeoniae Radix Alba, Paeoniae Radix Rubra, paeoniflorin and al- biflorin can raise the amount of WBC and have the effect of enriching blood induced by radiation, while paeoniflorin and albiflorin have a similar result in this model. The result indicated that both paeoniflorin and albiflorin are effective constituents in Paeoniae Radix Alba, and paeoniflorin work as the common effective constituent in both Paeoniae Radix Rubra and Paeoniae Radix Alba.

OBJECTIVETo study the protective effect of Acai berries(Euterpe oleraceae) on chronic alcoholic hepatic injury in rats and their mechanism.
METHODWistar rats were fed for 1 week and randomly divided into blank group, model group, Dongbao Gantai group, Acai 1.6, 0.8, 0.4 g . kg-1 groups. The blank group was given distilled water, and the other groups were orally given 56% white spirit (Erguotou) for eight weeks at the dosages of 8 mL . kg-1 in the 1st week, which increased by 0.1 mL week by week till to 15 mL . kg-1, in order to establish the chronic hepatic injury model, and observe the effect of Acai berry freeze-dried powder on hepatocyte membrane permeability, liver lipid peroxidation, changes in inflammatory cytokines and pathological changes in hepatocytes.
RESULTAcai berries could significantly reduce serum ALT and AST(P<0.05), MDA(P<0.05), TG(P<0.05) and serum TNF-α and IL-6(P <0.05) and increase GSH and SOD(P <0.05). According to liver histopathological observation, livers in the model group were dominated by steatosis, some livers suffered spotty necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration; The positive drug and Acai groups showed different changes in pathologic changes in rat livers.
CONCLUSIONAcai berries show s specific protective effect on alcoholic hepatic injury. Its mechanism may be correlated with the inhibition of such inflammatory factors as TNF-α and IL-6.

Objective To investigate the effects of alcohol extract of bark and male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. on airway allergic inflammation induced by chicken ovalbumin (OVA) in mice; To explore its mechanism of action. Methods On day 0, day 7, mice were intraperitoneally injected OVA for sensitization, followed by nasal stimulation for 21 days to establish airway allergic inflammation mice models. The mice were divided into normal group, model group, alcohol extract of bark of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. group, alcohol extract of male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.group, and Dexamethasone group. Each medication group was given relevant medicine for gavage. The lung tissue was embedded in HE and PAS dyeing, to observe the pathological changes of bronchus and surrounding lung. The levels of serum OVA-IgE, IL-4, IFN-γ and IL-13 were measured by ELISA. The expression of ICAM-1, VEGF, MMP9 and TIMP1 were detected by immunohistochemistry. Flow cytometry was used to detect the expression of Th17 cells in peripheral blood. The expressions of TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA in lung tissue were detected by RT-PCR. Results The model group showed changes of airway allergic inflammatory such as eosinophils and other inflammatory cell infiltration, bronchial spasm, and mucus secretion. Lung histopathology in alcohol extract of bark and male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.groups was improved significantly(P<0.05).Compared with the normal group, the levels of serum OVA-IgE, IL-4 and IL-13 increased in model group, while the level of IFN-γ decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). The expressions of ICAM-1, VEGF and MMP9 increased, while the expression of TIMP1 decreased (P<0.01); peripheral blood IL-17+cells increased (P<0.01); the expressions of TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA increased. Compared with the model group, the levels of serum OVA-IgE, IL-4 and IL-13 decreased in alcohol extract of bark and male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. groups (P<0.05, P<0.01); the expressions of ICAM-1 and VEGF decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01); the expression of TIMP1 increased. Alcohol extract of bark and male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.could down-regulate IL-17+cells,reduce the expression of IL-6 mRNA(P<0.05,P<0.01). Alcohol extract of bark of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. group could induce the secretion of IFN-γ (P<0.01), and down-regulate the expression of TNF-α mRNA(P<0.05).Alcohol extract of male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. group could significantly down-regulate the expression of MMP9 (P<0.05). Conclusion Alcohol extract of bark and male flower of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.can induce the production of OVA-IgE,inhibit secretion of Th2 cytokines, inhibit the expression of adhesion molecules, depress Th17 cells, so as to inhibit the airway allergic inflammation.

The clinical therapeutic effect of acupoint catgut-embedding for simple obesity was systemically analyzed to provide reference and assistance for its clinical treatment and research. By searching in the CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, Pubmed, Springer and Medline databases, clinical randomized controlled trials (RCT) of acupoint catgut-embedding for simple obesity published from Jan, 2009 to July, 2013 were collected while Revman 5. 2 software was applied to perform the Meta-analysis. Totally 19 articles were acquired with 1 658 cases involved. The effective rate was selected as primary outcome measure in 19 articles. The Meta-analysis was performed among homogeneous researches. The results indicated that compared with other therapies, pooled OR of acupoint catgut-embedding was 2.45 with 95% CI [1.81, 3.32]; in the test for overall effect, Z = 5.81, implying the efficacy difference of two therapies was significant in the treatment of simple obesity (P < 0.01). In subgroups analysis, in the event of treatment session with more than 3 months, compared with other therapies, pooled OR of acupoint catgut-embedding was 2.61 with 95% CI [1.53, 4.46]; in test for overall effect, Z = 3.51, implying the efficacy difference of two therapies was significant in the treatment of simple obesity (P < 0.01); in the event of treatment session with less than 3 months, compared with other therapies, pooled OR of acupoint catgut-embedding was 2.38 with 95% CI [1.65, 3.44]; in test for overall effect, Z = 4.46, implying in the treatment of simple obesity the efficacy difference of two therapies was significant (P < 0.01). Compared with electroacupuncture, OR of acupoint catgut-embedding was 1.79, 95% CI [1.08, 2.95] (P = 0.02). Compared with acupuncture, OR of acupoint catgut-embedding was 1.89, 95% CI [1.16, 3.09] (P = 0.01), which explained that compared with electroacupuncture and acupuncture, the efficacy of acupoint catgut-embedding was significantly different. In a word, the clinical efficacy of acupoint catgut-embedding is superior to other therapies in the treatment of simple obesity.
