Objective To observe the interventional effect of Compound Kusanqi Capsules on the apoptosis of colonic mucosal cells in rat model of ulcerative colitis (UC).Methods The rat model of UC was established by administrating dinitrochlorbenzene (DNCB), alcohol and acetic acid. The model then was intervened by Compound Kusanqi Capsules in high dose, middle dose and low dose respectively. The curative effect was observed through detecting the expressions of modulin Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and FasL of colonic mucosal cells in the model. Results After the intervention for 15 days the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and FasL of colonic mucosal cells were improved in varying degrees in the groups of high-dose, mid-dose and low-dose Compound Kusanqi Capsules, which had significant difference statistically compared with those in the model positive control group (P<0.01 or P<0.05).Conclusion Compound Kusanqi Capsules has the regulation effect on the apoptosis of colonic mucosal cells in rat model of UC.

Naturally occurring mutations in surface proteins of Hepatitis B virus(HBV)usually result in altered hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)secretion efficiency. In the present study,we reported two conserved residues,M75 and M103 with respect to HBsAg,mutations of which not only attenuated HBsAg secretion(M75 only),but also suppressed HBV genome replication without compromising the overlapping p-gene product. We also found M75 and M103 can initiate truncated surface protein(TSPs)synthesis upon over-expression of full-length surface proteins, which may possibly contribute to HBV genome replication. However, attempts to rescue replicationdefective HBV mutant by co-expression of TSPs initiated from M75 or M103 were unsuccessful, which indicated surface proteins rather than the putative TSPs were involved in regulation of HBV genome replication.

NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors are a subtype of glutamate receptor, and play an important role in both synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity. When excessively excited, NMDA receptors can cause cell death in many neuropathological scenarios such as OGD (oxygen and glucose deprivation) and brain injury. However, recent studies have revealed that under the physical and some pathological conditions, NMDA receptor could promote neuronal survival and protect neurons from damage.

Clinical transplantation evidence has indication that umbilical cord blood (UCB) can be useful in the hematopoietic reconstitution in the children, but not well in the adult patients because of the low cell count. The purpose of our study was to evaluate a new method for collection of blood cells from human placenta and umbilical cord. We have simultaneously harvested blood cells from umbilical cord (UCB), placenta blood (UPB) and placenta tissue (UPT) for their content of nucleated cells, CD34 (hematopoietic stem progenitor marker) positive cells. Result showed that the nuclear cell (NC) from UPB and UPT has three to four times than that from umbilical cord blood only, (8.3 +/- 1.04) x 10(8) (UCB), (16.33 +/- 5.54) x 10(8) (UPB), and (8.01 +/- 2.64) x 10(8) (UPT). CD34(+) cells are (0.77 +/- 0.01) x 10(6), (1.25 +/- 0.55) x 10(6) and (4.21 +/- 1.90) x 10(6) respectively. The cells from UPB and UPT have more survival ability than the cells from UCB in the long-term cell culture condition. It is clear that the blood stored in the liquid nitrogen did not show large loss of total nucleated cell count and CD34(+) cells. It was observed that UPT and UPB contained more suppressor lymphocytes, which may be important in prevention of graft-versus-host disease. In conclusion, our data may have implications for the development of placental blood collection together with umbilical cord blood banking for the stem cell transplantation.

Objective The study aimed to explore the relationship between AIF related pathway and the inju-ring of cultured SGNs (spiral ganglion neurons)by glutamate toxicity, and to find AIF expression and distribution changes in SGNs.Methods SGNs of 40 newborn rats within 3 day were obtained and cultured in vitro.Cultured cells were divided into four groups:the normal control group,10 mM,20 mM and 40 mM glutamate injured group, separately. After 48 h hours culturing, optical microscopy, immune fluorescence staining and real-time fluores-cence quantitative PCR were used to observe the morphology,AIF distribution, and AIF,calpain,Caspase3 expres-sion changes in SGNs in vitro.TUNEL was used to verify the cell apoptosis.ResuIts Noticeable morphological chan-ges and cell apoptosis were occurred in 20 mM glutamate group, with AIF nuclear translocation.AIF gene expression was significantly higher than normal after glutamate administration (P<0.05);moreover,calpain gene expression increased(P<0.05);but caspase3 expression was not statistically significantly increased in all glutamate treated groups (P>0.05). ConcIusion In the process of cultured SGNs injured by glutamate,AIF participated in the cell apoptosis.Noticeable cell apoptosis were occurred in 20 mM glutamate group with AIF nuclear translocation.Calpain up-expression also contributed to excitatory neurotransmitter injury on SGNs,but Caspase 3 had no obvious effects.

OBJECTIVETo systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of kidney-tonifying traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of male infertility.
METHODSBased on the principles and methods of Cochrane systematic reviews, we searched CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang databases from inception to December 2012 for randomized controlled clinical trials addressing the treatment of male infertility with kidney-tonifying traditional Chinese medicine. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and retrieval strategies, we extracted the data, evaluated the quality of the included literature, and conducted meta-analysis using the RevMan 5. 2 software.
RESULTSTwenty trials involving 2,272 patients were included, and the sample size of each study was from 60 to 270 cases. All the studies were graded as of poor quality, with Jadad scores of no more than 3 points. The results of meta-analysis showed that the total effectiveness rate of traditional Chinese medicine versus Western medicine on male infertility was RR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.19-2.47, and that of Chinese-Western combined therapy versus Western medicine was RR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.01-1.30. Both traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese-Western combined therapy showed a significantly better total effectiveness than Western medicine alone in improving the pregnancy rate without serious adverse reactions.
CONCLUSIONDue to the poor methodological quality and high heterogeneity of the included studies, the evidence for the efficacy and safety of kidney-tonifying traditional Chinese drugs in the treatment of male infertility is of but limited value, and further validation is needed by more high-quality studies.

AIMTo investigate the sweat regulation mechanism of human body.
METHODSArm muscular work was performed on bicycle ergometer by eight healthy male subjects on 20 W and 40 W work loads lasting 10 min or 20 min in 16 degrees C and 21 degrees C ambient temperature. Sweat, metabolic rate and corresponding skin and core temperature changes were measured during different periods.
RESULTSSweat varied directly with ambient temperature and there were the corresponding changes in mean skin temperature, rectal temperature and metabolic rate. And when the work load was elevated, the skin temperature at chest and metabolic rate increased as sweat increased. There were no differences in the physiological indices between 20 W 20 min and 20 W 10 min, but mean skin temperature and sweat rate during 40 W 20 min work were higher than 40 W 10 min while metabolic rate did not change. The time when chest temperature arrived at the threshold was in correspondence with obvious sweat onset. Both local skin temperature at chest and metabolic rate were significantly correlated with sweat, but the latter was stronger. The regression equation relating metabolic rate and sweat rate was compound function.
CONCLUSIONSkin temperature was important for sweat onset, and the sweat predicted model based on the metabolic rate or ambient temperature was more suitable and practical.
