The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is the primary stabilizer to resist valgus stress. Its injury is common in overhead throwing athletes, mainly caused by repeated valgus forces, and can cause elbow pain and affect the career of athletes. A common treatment of ulnar collateral ligament injury for overhead throwing athletes is ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR). At present, the UCLR techniques have been constantly improved, mainly in graft structure, incision exposure, management of the ulnar nerve, and methods of humeral and ulnar fixation. This paper is to review the anatomy and biomechanics of UCL, as well as techniques, key points, postoperative complications and rehabilitation of UCLR so as to deepen the understanding of UCLR in clinicians.

Background and purpose:There are few studies referring to population-based cancer survival of bladder cancer for more than forty years in China. This paper was to offer basis for assessing long-term survival trends of bladder cancer and the prognosis of this cancer through analysis of the survival rates based on cancer report documents from 1972 to 2011 in Qidong. Methods:The deadline of the last follow-up for survival status of the 1 619 registered cases was Apr. 2012. Cumulative observed survival rate (OS) and relative survival rate (RS) were calculated using Hakulinen’s method performed by the SURV3.01 Software which is developed by Finnish Cancer Registry. Results:The one-, three-, five-, ten-, fifteen-, twenty-, and thirty-year OS rates were 59.91%, 43.49%, 35.98%, 26.91%, 21.30%, 18.37% and 12.24%; and the one-, three-, five-, ten-, fifteen-, twenty-, and thirty-year RS rates were 64.07%, 53.02%, 50.06%, 52.42%, 59.59%, 76.39% and 115.75%, respectively. For males, these OS rates were 60.84%, 43.91%, 36.95%, 27.31%, 21.49%, 18.29% and 12.59%, and RS rates were 65.23%, 53.95%, 52.02%, 54.57%, 62.59%, 79.12% and 117.07%, respectively; For females, these OS rates were 56.61%, 42.03%, 32.44%, 25.65%, 20.78%, 18.80% and 0%, and RS rates, 59.99%, 49.91%, 43.37%, 45.86%, 51.21%, 69.02% and 0%, respectively. There were no statistical differences couldbe found between both sexes (P=0.256). Five-year RS rates of age groups 15-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, and more than 75 were 49.10%, 67.53%, 62.77%, 53.92%, 46.59% and 39.85%, and 10-year RS rates, 49.79%, 61.23%, 52.99%, 48.21%, 54.94% and 51.21%, respectively. Remarkable improvement could be seen for the five-, ten-, and fifteen-year RS rates in this setting since 1980’s.Conclusion:The survival outcome from Qidong registered cases with bladder cancer shows gradual progress during the past 2 decades. Early detection and improvement of therapies may be the factors affecting the prognosis of bladder cancer. Although the disparities in survival rates between Qidong and the developed countries are getting narrower, potential for survival improvement still exists.

A three-dimensional (3D) transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) imaging system is presented in this paper. The 3D imaging system is used for diagnosing diseases of prostate. The 3D image is reconstructed by a series of two-dimensional image data which is obtained through rectum. It can be a guide to prostate needle biopsies. The system is built by two parts: hardware and software. In the hardware, the mechanical device, stepper motor, control circuit, B Mode TRUS and personal computer (PC) workshop are presented. The software includes the firmware of micro control unit and software of the PC workshop. In order to evaluate the performance of the 3D imaging system, we did experiments with water and agar phantoms, and the results demonstrated the system's ability of 3D imaging with high-precision.

Objective To evaluate the curative effects of intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) during the conservative management for patients with indirect optic nerve injury (ONI),and to analyze the benefits of visual evoked potential (VEP) monitoring in prognosis assessment. Methods Among the 253 patients with cranial-facial injury,108 sufferred from optic nerve injury including 89 cases without optic nerve decompression treatment. These 89 patients were randomly divided into:group A,in which patients were given methylprednisolone intravenously for 7 days; and group B,in which patients without methylprednisolone treatment. The extent of and time required for eyesight recovery were recorded.VEP measurement was carried out in all cases. Results No differences in gender, age and BMI (Body Mass Index, all P > 0.05) were observed. The incidence of ONI was higher in patients with motorcycle accident than that in those with car accident (P <0.01).In the motorcycle accidents, casualties wearing a helmet had lower incidence of ONI (P < 0.01).Patients treated with methylprednisolone had a shorter recovery time (P < 0.01) from blindness, however there was no difference in long-term outcome between group A and B.In patients with visual improvement in the “ non-extinguished” group, the amplitude and latency of the P wave of VEP were markedly ameliorated after the treatments (P < 0.01).Conclusions Most of the ONI casualties in our study were resulted from motorcycle accidents, and wearing a helmet is an effective protection measure. The intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) showed no effect on improving the prognosis in patients with conservative treatment. The IVMP shortened the recovery time at the expense of increase in risk of complications.VEP examination is beneficial in prognosis assessment for non-operative ONI patients. The improvement of the amplitude and latency of P wave has close correlations with patients'visual recovery.
