Stem cells are a group of undifferentiated cells with indefinite self-renewal and pluripotent differentiation ability. They are able to differentiate into precursor/progenitor cells and a variety of cell types and further regenerate new cells to be involved in the repair and rebuilding of injured tissue. Therefore, stem cells are becoming the major research objects in the study on tissue engineering therapy and regenerative medicine. As a sense organ composed of several kinds of neurons and other cells, eyes possesse the dominant superiority in stem cell transplantation therapy because of its good operation controllability and visuality, less demand for seed cells and low rejection after transplantation. These advantages have aroused growing interesting of the fundamental research and clinical trail in stem cell transplantation for irreversible eye diseases. Some exciting advances in the field of stem cell fundamental research, several phase Ⅰ/Ⅱ clinical trials are in progress. The patients with degenerative eye diseases for phase Ⅰ clinical trials are in recruiting in China to evaluate future curative effect and security of stem cell-based therapies.Currently, several issues in stem cell-based eye disease therapies are still pending. We discuss the updated development of stem cell-based transplantation in ophthalmology and future researching direction in order to help ophthalmological researchers to understand the concepts and research strategies.

Journal of Third Military Medical University 2003;0(20):-
Objective To evaluate the long-term effect of phacoemulsification (PHACO)+intraocular lens implantation (IOL) for cataract combined with primary angle closure (PAC) in the expansion phase. Methods Thirty-eight eyes of 29 patients which suffered from cataract combined PAC in the expansion phase had undergone PHACO+IOL and goniosynechialysis from June 2005 to December 2006 were retrospectively studied. Results A total of 32 eyes of 24 cases were followed up for 6 to 35 months post-operatively, meanly 19.53?8.93 months. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly decreased from a preoperative mean of (31.61?9.88) mmHg without medication therapy to (16.73?2.13) mmHg in 1 month after operation and (15.61?1.94) mmHg at the end of follow-up. The differences between the untreatment and the treatment were statistically significant (P=0.000). The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was significantly improved in all cases (P=0.000). Although the BCVA at the end of follow-up was declined when compared with the acuity 1 month post-operatively, there was no significant difference. The mean central anterior chamber depth was increased from (2.22?0.51) mm preoperatively to (3.59?0.46) mm in 1 month after operation and (3.17?0.35) mm at the end of follow-up with significant differences (P=0.000). The angle of anterior chamber in all operated eyes became wider and the parts of angle closure opened at different degrees. All of patients had no any vision defection. Conclusion PHACO+IOL and combined with goniosynechialysis blocks primary angle-closure glaucoma course, and has better long-term effect.

ObjectiveTo compare tongue positions at rest between normal occlusion people and patients with anterior cross-bite malocclusions, and to explore whether there is any abnormality in the tongue position of the anterior cross-bite malocclusions. Methods Twenty adults of normal bite (8 males and 12 females, with an average age of 23.8 years) and 20 adults of anterior cross-bite (1 1males and 9 females, with an average age of 24.6 years) were involved in this study. The position habits of tongue were investigated by a questionnaire. The tongue positions, which were enhanced by applying barium to tongue and palatal surface, were compared by cephalometric roentgenogram. Two groups were compared by t-test to determine the variation of anterior cross-bite. Results In normal occlusion group, the dorsum of tongues was sealed with all palatal surfaces except uvula site.In anterior cross bite group, tongues were far from palate, and were difficult to lift. The profile of tongue showed standing upright forward and up in normal occlusion group, while inclining back and low in anterior cross-bite group. The tops of tongue dorsum sites were at the border of soft and hard palate in normal occlusion group. While in anterior cross bite group, the tops of tongue dorsum sites were at the border of uvula and soft palate. In anterior cross-bite group, the tongue-to palate distance was bigger than that of normal occlusion group (P<0.01).However,both length and height of the tongue had no significant differences between two groups (P>0.05).ConclusionsIn anterior cross-bite patients, tongue positions were lower than that of normal occlusion people.
