Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2017;33(4):469-474
Aim To investigate the effect of allopurinol and benzbromarone on serum level of uric acid, hepatic xanthine oxidase(XOD) activity and intestinal expression of glucose transporter(GLUT) 2 and 5 in rats with fructose-induced hyperuricemia. Methods Wistar rats were fed with 10% fructose in drinking water for consecutive 8 weeks to induce HUA.Treatment with 5 mg·kg-1 allopurinol or 10 mg·kg-1 benzbromarone were intragastricly administered from 5~8 weeks.Serum level of uric acid and XOD activity in liver were tested.Expression of GLUT2 and GLUT5 in intestine was analyzed by immunohistochemistry staining and Western blot. Results Treatment with allopurinol or benzbromarone significantly decreased the serum level of uric acid in fructose-induced hyperuricemic rats.At the same time, allopurinol treatment significantly reduced the XOD activity in liver and GLUT5 expression in intestine.Nevertheless, benzbromarone treatment did not show inhibitory effect on hepatic XOD activity and intestinal GLUT5 expression. In addition, neither allopurinol nor benzbromarone showed inhibitory effect on GLUT2 expression in intestine. Conclusions Allopurinol decreases serum level of uric acid in fructose-induced hyperuricemic rats. The mechanism is related to reducing XOD-mediated uric acid production in liver, and decreasing GLUT5-mediated fructose absorption in intestine.

Objective: To observe the effect of mild moxibustion on cancer-related fatigue, serum ghrelin and adiponectin in patients undergoing chemotherapy after colorectal cancer surgery. Methods: Seventy patients were divided into a control group and an observation group according to the random number table method, with 35 cases in each group. Patients in both groups were treated with conventional FOLFOX4 chemotherapy regimen. Patients in the control group also received routine treatments such as symptomatic treatment of complications, health education, nutritional support, and exercise intervention. Patients in the observation group received mild moxibustion on the basis of interventions used in the control group. The Piper fatigue scale-revision (PFS-R), Karnofsky performance status (KPS) and spleen and kidney yang deficiency syndrome were scored, and serum ghrelin and adiponectin levels were measured before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, total score of PFS-R in the control group did not change significantly (P>0.05), while in the observation group it was significantly reduced (P<0.05) and lower than that in the control group (P<0.05); KPS scores in both groups were increased (both P<0.05), and it was significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05); total score of spleen and kidney yang deficiency syndrome in the control group did not change significantly (P>0.05), while it was significantly reduced in the observation group (P<0.05) and lower than that in the control group (P<0.05); serum ghrelin and adiponectin levels in the control group had no significant changes (both P>0.05), but the levels were significantly increased in the observation group (both P<0.05) and higher than those in the control group (both P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the routine treatments, mild moxibustion can relieve fatigue, improve quality of life, and improve the symptoms of spleen and kidney yang deficiency in patients undergoing chemotherapy after colorectal cancer surgery, which may be related to the regulation of serum ghrelin and adiponectin levels.

Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2014;34(10):941-945
OBJECTIVETo observe the improvements in constipation differentiated as intestine system syndrome and lung system syndrome treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and explore their correlation.
METHODSSeventy cases of severe functional constipation were randomized into an EA group and a pseudo-EA group, 35 cases in each one. In the EA group, the needles were inserted deeply at Tianshu (ST 25) and Fujie (SP 14) on bilateral sides, and directly went to parietal peritoneum. EA was attached to the needles, dense-disperse wave, 2 Hz/15 Hz, and 0.1 to 1.0 mA. The perpendicular insertion was done at Shangjuxu (ST 37), 25 mm in depth. After qi arrival, the needle was lifted, thrusted and rotated once every 10 min, for 3 times totally. The needles were retained for 30 min. In the pseudo-EA group, the pseudo-points lateral to Tianshu (ST 25), Fujie (SP 14) and Shangjuxu (ST 37) on bilateral sides were punctured shallowly. The electric stimulation was pretended to connect but with the electric wire cutting off. The needles were retained for 30 min. The treatment was given 5 times weekly in the first two weeks and 3 times weekly in the later 6 weeks. Totally, 28 treatments were required. TCM intestine and lung syndrome scale was used for evaluation. The changes in TCM syndromes were observed before and after treatment in the patients of the two groups.
RESULTSThe total score of intestine and lung syndrome and the score of individual syndrome were all reduced after treatment as compared with those before treatment in the two groups (both P<0.01). The improvements of the EA group in the total score of intestine system syndrome, the scores of large. intestine syndrome and stomach syndrome, the total score of lung system syndrome and the score of lung dysfunction in dispersing and descending syndrome were superior to those of the pseudo-EA group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The differences in the scores of lung qi deficiency syndrome and throat syndrome were not significant between the two groups (all P>0.05). Simultaneously, the very strong positive correlation (P<0.01) and positive linear correlation (P<0.01) were presented in the total score of intestine and lung syndrome of the two groups.
CONCLUSIONEA obviously improves in intestine system syndrome (including large intestine syndrome and stomach syndrome), as well as lung system syndrome (lung dysfunction in dispersing and descending) in the treatment of constipation. But the improvements are not apparent in the treatment of lung qi deficiency and throat disorder. Additionally, the obvious correlation is displayed in the improvements in intestine and lung syndrome.
