A pot experiment was conducted to study effect of drought stress on leaf physiological characteristics and growth of one year old Stellaria dichotoma seedlings. The result showed that plant height and shoot dry weight significantly decreased with decrease in soil water content; however, root length and root dry weight increased at light drought stress and decreased at severe drought stress. The result also showed that with the decrease of soil water content, proline content in S. dichotoma leaves decreased then increase, while solube protein content decreased. Activities of SOD and POD in S. dichotoma leaves significantly decreased as soil water content decreased, while activity of CAT significantly decreased at severe drought stress. Membrane permeability in S. dichotoma leaves increased, while MDA content decreased then increased as soil water decreased. These results suggest that S. dichotoma had osmotic stress resistance ability and reactive oxygen scavenging capacity at light drought stress, which caused S. dichotoma growth was no inhibited at a certain extent drought stress.

Progestin has been used as a hormone therapy for some prostatic diseases, suchas benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatic cancer, and as a hormone regimen formale contraception with or without androgen. This article reviewed the physiologicaland pharmacological effects of progestin on male reproduction.Progestin inhibits thehypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis by the negative feedback. All the malereproductive organs highly expressed progesterone receptor (PR) mRNA, whichsuggested that progestin played some important roles in these organs.Humanspermatogenic cells and spermatozoa contained definite amount of progesterone (P)and 17 α-hydroxyprogesterone,which suggested an association between these steroidsand spermatogenesis and fertilization.A hormonal regimen consisting of progestinplus testesterone has been confirmed as an effective, safe, and reversible malecontraception.Though pharmacological dosages of progestin inhibited the expressionof androgen-dependant sexual behaviors, physiological levels progesterone couldstimulate sexual and copulatory behaviors. Some pregnane derivations have a highlyinhibitary effect on the enzyme 5 alphareductase type 2,which showed the benefit onthe treatment of prostatic diseases. OBJECTIVETo study the effects of extremely low frequency sinusoidal magnetic fields on hydrolysis of F(0)F(1)-ATPase and its mechanism.
METHODSThe F(0)F(1)-ATPases which was localized on the outer surface of chromatophores were prepared from the cells of Rhodospirillum rubrum and were exposed to 0.1 approximately 0.5 mT, 4.7 approximately 96.0 Hz magnetic fields.
RESULTSThe hydrolysis activity of F(0)F(1)-ATPase was stimulated by 0.5 mT, 4.7, 12.0, 60.0, 72.0, 84.0 and 96.0 Hz magnetic fields respectively and inhibited by 0.5 mT, 24.0 Hz magnetic field (P < 0.05); 0.3 mT, 4.7, 24.0 and 60.0 Hz magnetic fields also distinctly affected F(0)F(1)-ATPases activity respectively (P < 0.05), whereas 0.1 mT exposure caused no significant changes on that activity. When the hydrolysis activity of the F(0)F(1)-ATPases was inactivated by its inhibitor DCCD, the 0.5 mT, 24.0 Hz magnetic field still inhibited the hydrolysis activity of the F(0)F(1)-ATPase and 0.5 mT, 60.0 Hz magnetic field also had stimulating effects (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe effects of magnetic fields on the hydrolysis activity of the F(0)F(1)-ATPases depend on not only magnetic frequency but also magnetic intensity. The threshold of magnetic intensity is between 0.1 mT and 0.3 mT. F(0)F(1)-ATPases, especially F1-portion may be an end-point of magnetic fields.

National Journal of Andrology 2004;10(8):623-626
The circulating renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is well known for its role in the maintenance of blood pressure and electrolyte and fluid homeostasis. However, other local angiotensin-generating systems than the circulating RAS have been found in numerous tissues. The male reproductive system including the testis, epididymis, and prostate has several sites of intrinsic RAS activity. The local RAS in these tissues can be responsive to androgens, fat acid, drugs, and hypoxia. There has been evidence for the involvement of the RAS not only in male reproduction, but also in the development of prostate disease. Besides, the assessment of the local RAS activity may be helpful to the early diagnosis of tumor in the male reproductive system.

Objective: To observe the efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) plus Yi Jin Jing (Sinew-transforming Qigong Exercises) for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: A total of 60 patients with KOA were divided into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table method, with 30 cases in each group. Patients in the observation group received the treatment of EA plus Yi Jin Jing (Sinew-transforming Qigong Exercises), while patients in the control group only received EA treatment. Both groups were treated for 5 weeks. The changes of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and visual analog scale (VAS) scores in the two groups were observed after treatment. Results: After treatment, the total effective rate in the observation group (92.3%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (70.0%), (P<0.05); the WOMAC and VAS scores in both groups were significantly lower than those before treatment, showing statistical significance (all P<0.01); there were significant differences in the post-treatment changes in the WOMAC and VAS scores between the two groups (P<0.05, P<0.01). Conclusion: EA plus Yi Jin Jing (Sinew-transforming Qigong Exercises) is clinically effective for KOA. This combined treatment can alleviate clinical symptoms.
