OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Compound Tongtu Granule (CTG) on intestinal permeability in elderly sepsis patients.
METHODSEighty elderly sepsis patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group by randomized double blinded method, 40 in each group. On the basis of conventional antiseptic treatment program, patients in the experimental group took CTG, while those in the control group took placebos. The dosage for CTG or placebos was 14.3 g each package, one package each time, twice daily for 14 successive days. Patients' abdominal symptoms and signs, levels of serum inflammatory factors (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and procalcitonin), levels of plasma endotoxin, and the intestinal permeability (IP, represented by urinary lactulose/mannitol excretion rate) were compared between the two groups before and after treatment.
RESULTSAfter 14-day treatment, patients in the experimental group had improved abdominal symptoms, increased frequency of defecation, significantly decreased levels of plasma endotoxin and IP, when compared with the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONCTG could improve the intestinal barrier function in elderly sepsis patients.

Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a serious health issue, which can impact the hormone secretion. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between serum sex hormone concentrations and different severity degree of OSAHS, and to evaluate the influence of OSAHS on sex hormone levels. We enrolled 116 subjects who were subjected to polysomnography (PSG). They were divided into three groups: control group (n=10) [apnea hypopnea index (AHI) <5/h], mild-moderate OSAHS group (n=15) (5≤AHI<30/h), and severe OSAHS group (n=91) (AHI≥30/h). The patients in OSAHS group were subdivided into obesity and non-obesity subgroups. The parameters such as AHI, body mass index (BMI), lowest oxygen saturation (LSaO2), and mean oxygen saturation (MSaO2) were recorded. Serum levels of testosterone, polactin, estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were determined in the morning immediately after waking up. Mean levels of hormones were compared among groups. The correlation between hormone levels and sleep-breathing parameters was analyzed. No significant differences in serum sex hormone levels were found among control, mild-moderate OSAHS, and severe OSAHS groups (P>0.05). There was no correlation between AHI and sex hormone levels (P>0.05). Testosterone was significantly negatively correlated with BMI (P<0.05). These results suggested that BMI might have a direct effect on testosterone level, and it might be an important factor affecting testosterone level in male OSAHS patients, and there may be no correlation between severity of OSAHS and sex hormones levels.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the value of fetal chromosomal karyotype analysis in cases of early spontaneous abortion.
METHODSChorionic villus specimens obtained from 110 cases of early spontaneous abortion were cultured for karyotype analysis.
RESULTSOf the 110 cases, chorionic villus was successfully cultured in 103 cases (93.7%), and abnormal embryo karyotypes were identified in 52 cases (50.5%). Trisomy was the most frequent embryo karyotype abnormalities in these cases, and chromosomal aberration occurred in 29 cases (52.9%) of the first spontaneous abortion and in 23 cases (42.6%) of repeated abortions. Female fetuses accounted for 75.5% (78 cases) in the spontaneously aborted fetuses and for 67.3% (35 cases) in fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities.
CONCLUSIONEmbryo chromosomal abnormality is the most important reason of early spontaneous abortion, and karyotype analysis of the villus helps identify the causes of abortion and ensure the success of the next pregnancy.

OBJECTIVETo determine whether the nodule and eminence on the frenulum labii superioris, location of Yinjiao (DU28) according to the meridian theory, could be used to prognosticate the recurrence of patients with colorectal cancer.
METHODSThe data of 101 patients with colorectal cancer in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital from May 2011 to November 2011 was analyzed. The photos of all patients' frenulum labii superioris were taken. Nodule and eminence on frenulum labii superioris were the positive standard. Biopsy and pathological testing for the nodule were carried out on one patient with large nodule on frenulum labii superioris.
RESULTSPatients with positive frenulum labii superioris had a higher risk of recurrence and/or metastasis than patients with negative frenulum labii superioris. There were no significant differences in diagnosis of recurrence and/or metastasis between the status of frenulum labii superioris and the traditional diagnostic criteria (P =0.238). The Kappa was 0.606 (P <0.001). The sensitivity was 76.0% and the specificity was 85.4%. The pathological report demonstrated that the nodule on frenulum labii superioris was mucosal excrescence with normal structure.
CONCLUSIONNodule and eminence on frenulum labii superioris are potential diagnostic markers for metastatic colorectal cancer.
