OBJECTIVEChinese herbal medicine has been extensively used in the treatment of vascular dementia (VaD), but lacked systematic review on its efficacy and safety. So we conducted a systematic review to assess the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine in treating VaD.
METHODSCNKI, CBM, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library were retrieved for randomized trials (RCTs) on Chinese herbal medicine treating VaD patients. Randomized parallel control trials by taking Chinese herbal medicine as one treatment method and placebos/cholinesterase inhibitors/Memantine hydrochloride as the control were included. Quality rating and data extraction were performed. RevMan5.2.0 Software was used for meta-analysis. Standardized mean difference (SMD) at 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to indicate effect indicators of results.
RESULTSSeven RCTs met the inclusive criteria. Totally 677 VaD patients were randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control group. Descriptive analyses were performed in inclusive trials. The cognitive function was assessed in all trials. Results showed Mini-Mental state examination (MMSE) score was better in the Chinese herbal medicine group than in the placebo group, but with no significant difference when compared with the donepezil group (P > 0.05). Adverse reactions were mainly manifested as gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain in the Chinese herbal medicine group. But they occurred more in the donepezil group than in the Chinese herbal medicine group.
CONCLUSIONSThe methodological quality of included trials was poor with less samples. Results of different trials were lack of consistency. Present evidence is not sufficient to prove or disapprove the role of Chinese herbal medicine in improving clinical symptoms and outcome indicators of VaD patients. Their clinical efficacy and safety need to be supported by more higher quality RCTs.

Background The evaluation of visual function after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK) mainly focuses on the study of contrast sensitivity funetion (CSF).However,CSF measurement is a subjective method and therefore has a limiting in application.A point spread function (PSF) is becoming a study topic because of its objectivity in assessing visual quality. Objective Present study was to evaluate the change of the modulation transfer function (MTF) of eyes and compare the optical and visual quality of human eyes after LASIK.Methods Thirty-six patients(72 eyes) were included in this study. The patients were divided into low myopia(-2.72±0.52 D),moderate myopia (-4.89+0.80 D) and high myopia (-8.00+0.98 D) groups according to the spherical equivalent (SE)diopter before the sugery. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA),best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were examined before and after operation, and PSF data was obtained with Topoeon PSF-1000 analyzer under the 3.0 mm and 6.0 mm pupil size conditions. The follow-up visits of the patients were scheduled at the 7th days,1 st and 3rd months.Written informed consent was obtained from each patient before this study. ResuIts The MTF values among the three refractive groups were significantly different between 3 mm and 6 mm pupil preoperatively (P<0.05).Under the condition of 3 mm pupil size, the MTF values in the spatial frequencies of 2.98 cpd and 14.88 cpd were significantly declined in different time points after operation in comparison with preoperative ones (P<0.05).However,the MTF changes had no statistical significance in the spatial frequencies from 18.85-37.70 cpd among various time points(P>0.05).Under the condition of the 6 mm pupil size,MTF values in low and moderate myopia groups were reduced after operation in comparison with before operation at the spatial frequencies from 2.98-7.44 cpd(P<0.05),however,there were no obvious difference was found in the spatial frequencies of 9.42-37.70 cpd(P>0.05).The MTF values of high myopia group was decreased significantly at all spatial frequencies(P<0.05).The MTF values improved gradually as the prolong of time after operation but was still lower at the 3rd postoperative month than that of preoperation. Conclusion The postoperative visual quality is associated with refractive power and pupil diameter.PSF is a feasible method in assessing the early visual quality after LASIK.

Objective To investigate the value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model of diffusion weighted MRI in assessing grades and enhancement patten of uterine cervical cancer. Methods Thirty one patients with pathologically proven cervical cancer, who underwent MRI scan preoperatively, were analyzed retrospectively and were divided into 3 groups according to their pathological grading of cacer, including 6 with G1 cancer, 17 with G2 and 8 with G3. The diameter of each lesion was≥1 cm. 10 b values (0, 30, 50, 100, 150, 200, 400, 800, 1 000, 1 500 s/mm2) were used in DWI, and DCE-MRI was performed with a time resolution of 9.8 s. Parameters of DWI (ADC, D, f, D*) and semiquantitative parameters of DCE-MRI (Slop, Maxslop, CER, Washout, AUC90) were measured. One-way ANOVA analysis of variance and Pearson correlation were used to analyze normally distributed continuous data. Kruskal-Wallis H test and Spearman correlation were used to analyze abnormally distributed continuous data. Tumor volume and all of the MRI parameters were compared as well as correlated with pathological grading. The perfusion parameters derived from IVIM were correlated with those derived from dynamic enhanced MR imaging. The sensitivity and specificity of f value to to diagnose G3 cervical cancer and the best cutoff were calculated from areas under the ROC curves. Results Tumor volume of G1,G2 and G3 cancers were(33.8±31.1),(19.6±16.9)and(31.2±29.1)cm3(F=1.147,P=0.332), respectively.ADC values of the three groups were(1.03 ± 0.11)× 10-3,(1.00 ± 0.10)× 10-3 and(0.90 ± 0.05)× 10-3mm2/s,respectively(F=4.619,P=0.018).D values of the three groups were (0.80 ± 0.11) × 10-3, (0.77 ± 0.06) × 10-3and (0.69 ± 0.06) × 10-3mm2/s ,respectively(F=5.272, P=0.011).f values of the three groups were 0.20±0.02, 0.22±0.03 and 0.24± 0.03, respectively (F=3.524, P=0.043).All of the others were of no significant difference (P>0.05).Both ADC and D correlated negatively with tumor grading (r=-0.464 and-0.493, P=0.009 and 0.005, respectively). f value correlated positively with tumor grading (r=0.436, P=0.014).Areas of ADC, D and f value under ROC curves to diagnose G3 cancers were 0.179, 0.147 and 0.690, respectively. While the cut-off value of f was 0.22, the diagnostic performance for G3 cancer was with a sensitivity of 75.0% (6/8) and a specificity of 60.9% (14/23). The value of f had weak positive correlations with Slop, Maxslop, CER and AUC90 of semiquantitative analysis of DCE-MRI (r=0.319, 0.337, 0.293 and 0.344, respectively, P<0.01). Conclusion IVIM model of multi-b value DWI may provide information in the assessment of differentiation and en hancement pattern of cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE To explore the effect and mechanisms of LW-AFC,a new formula derived from Liu Wei Di Huang Tang,on irradiation-induced reduction of mice adult hippocampal neurogenesis. METHODS C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into seven groups (n=10): control group, LW-AFC group (1.6 g·kg-1), Liu Wei Di Huang Tang (LW) group (10 g·kg-1), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) group, irradiation group, irradiation+LW group, and irradiation+LW-AFC group. Reduction of mice adult hippocampal neurogenesis was induced by cranial irradiation.LW-AFC was administered by oral gavage for 30 d after cranial irradiation treatment. Immunofluorescence and Nissl′s staining were performed for histological morphology assessment. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) staining was used in the detection of proliferation cells. The peripheral blood and hippocampal homogenate were collected to measure the content of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (INF-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β),IL-4 and IL-10.The hippocampal homogenate was used for Western blot to detect the BDNF-TrkB signal pathway, including extracellular regulated protein kinases1/2 (ERK1/2) and BDNF target protein. Morris water maze and new object recognition test were performed to examine the cognitive function of mice. The mice forced swimming and tail suspension test were used to assess alteration in depressive behavior. Long term potentiation was used to examine the synaptic plasticity change of mice. RESULTS Adult hippocampal neurogenesis was significantly reduced after irradiation of 20 Gray dose (10 Gray per day, total 2 d). LW-AFC treatment increased the BrdU number of irradiated mice (P<0.05). In Morris water maze test, LW-AFC group showed decreased escape latency in the learning period (P<0.05), while increased the number of crossing the platform in the memory period. LW-AFC can also reduce the immobility time of mice in the tail suspension test (P<0.01). CONCLU-SION LW-AFC modulates adult neurogenesis to ameliorate cognitive impairment and reduce depres-sive behavior in radiation injury mice.

Abstract: Schistosomiasis is a serious major parasitic disease that threatens human life and health. A better understanding
of the mechanism of host-schistosome interactions is the key to designing new prevention and control strategies. MicroRNAs
(miRNAs) are endogenous small non-coding RNA molecules, which lead to the degradation of the target messenger RNA
(mRNA) or inhibition of its translation in a sequence-specific manner. Both schistosome and its host produce miRNAs, which
can be secreted by extracellular vesicles (EVs). There is accumulating evidence that miRNAs from schistosome can be taken
up by host cells, and finely manipulate the phenotype of host cells for their survival or pathogenesis in a cross-species manner,
even inhibiting the growth and metastases of hepatoma cells. It is still unknown whether host free miRNAs can be taken up by
schistosome, but this phenomenon is highly probable. miRNA-mediated cross-species regulation has emerged as a novel
mechanism for host-schistosome interactions, and this review summarizes the advances in this regard.

AIM To identify differentially expressed proteins in the plasma that may be used as biomarkers for heroin addiction through a two-dimensional (2-D)gel electrophoresis/mass spectrometry approach. METHODS Following removal of albumin and IgG,the plasma from 5 heroin abusers and 5 normal controls was separated by 2-D gel electrophoresis using immobi-lized pH gradients 4 -7 drystrip and PAGE. Gel ima-ges were analyzed using ImageMaster Elit 5.0. Differ-ential proteins were selected and analyzed through tan-dem mass spectrometry. RESULTS Average number for samples was 350±21 protein spots. In them there were 5 spots that differed by more than 1.5 fold be-tween the two groups obtained through image analysis.Through tandem mass spectrometry above spots were identified as fibrinogen γ (increased by 5 fold), hu-man α1-B-glycoprotein (decreased to 1/1.8 of control group), uncleaved α1-antitrypsin (increased by 2.5 fold), chain of transthyretin (decreased to 1/2 of con-trol group ) and ccruloplasmin (increased by 6.6 fold ). CONCLUSION There are differences between heroin abusers and normal controls in the blood plasma proteome. Some proteins may have a role in the damage to central nervous system through heroin abuse. Such proteins may provide novel biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic targeting, as well as clues forunderstanding the mechanism of heroin abuse.
