Objective To study the characteristics of the variations of formaldehyde concentration in indoor air of newly decorated living rooms. Methods The formaldehyde concentrations in indoor air of newly decorated rooms were determined with model 4160_2 formaldehyde analyzer during the different periods after decoration. Results At the 10th minute after closing all the windows and doors in the newly decorated rooms, the formaldehyde concentrations of indoor air exceeded the standard nearly as high as 2 times, reached 51% of the peak concentration at the 30th minute, and reached the peak concentration (0.652 mg/m 3) at the 420th minute, then decreased gradually with the prolongation of periods after decoration and accorded with the sanitary standard in the 4th month after decoration. The whole study was carried out at the indoor air temperature of 27.8~29.9 ℃. Conclusion The indoor air pollution by formaldehyde was serious in newly decorated living rooms. The ventilation should be enhanced during the first 4_month period after decoration, so that the formaldehyde concentration could be decreased gradually.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) on ACAT-1 expression and cholesterol content in THP-1-derived macrophages and foam cells.
METHODSTHP-1 cells were induced to differentiate into macrophages and further into foam cells. The macrophages and foam cells were exposed to different concentrations (0, 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 µmol/L) of ADMA for varying time lengths (6, 12, and 24 h), and the changes in ACAT-1 mRNA and protein levels in the cells were measured with RT-PCR and Western blotting. The cellular cholesterol content was measured with enzyme-linked colorimetry assay.
RESULTSIn THP-1-derived macrophages and foam cells, the expression levels of ACAT-1 mRNA and protein and cellular cholesterol content increased significantly in response to ADMA treatment in a time- and concentration-dependent manner.
CONCLUSIONADMA may play an important role in inducing foam cell formation from macrophages. ACAT-1 inhibition targeting the macrophages and foam cells may serve as a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2012;32(11):1558-1561
OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of Luyuan Capsule (LYC) leachate on the proliferation and maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) of adult peripheral blood.
METHODSTotally 100 mL peripheral blood was collected from 4 healthy males. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated using density gradient centrifugation. The precursor DCs were obtained using wall adherent culture. The immature DCs with recombinant human GM-CSF (rhGM-CSF) and recombinant human IL-4 (rhlL-4) added were harvested for 7 days to get immature DCs. The immature DCs cultured with 1% LYC leachate for two days were taken as the experimental group, while the immature DCs cultured with 20 ng/mL recombinant human TNF-alpha (rhTNF-alpha) for two days were taken as the control group. The morphology of DCs was observed by inverted phase contrast microscope, and the cell proliferation was detected by cell counting. The DCs specific marker CD83 was analyzed using flow cytometry.
RESULTSThe proliferation capacities of DCs were improved in the experimental group. More and longer dendritic protrusions and possess were shown on the surface of DCs in the experimental group than in the control group. The CD83 expressions was obviously higher in the experimental group (84.1% +/- 0.3%) than in the control group (58.7% +/- 0.2%), showing statistical difference (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION1% LYC leachate could promote the maturation and proliferation of peripheral blood DCs, stronger than that of 20 ng/mL rhTNF-alpha.

Objective To investigate the relationship between drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis and adult carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods In 2009, 285 participants aged over 40 from drinking-water type of endemic arsenism areas and 293 residents aged over 40 from control areas were investigated in Yingxian county,Shanxi province. Portable-type B mode color ultrasound was used to examine the carotid artery of all participants. The carotid atherosclerosis were diagnosed and graded through the ultrasonograms. Content of water arsenic and hair arsenic of 10 people randomly selected in every villages were detected. Results A total of 5 villages with drinkingwater type of endemic arsenicosis as observation group and 5 villages without drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis as control group were investigated. The prevalence rates of adult carotid atherosclerosis within observation group were 35.09%(20/57), 55.74%(34/61), 38.46%(20/52), 36.51%(23/63) and 46.15%(24/52), respectively, and standardized prevalence rates were 32.5%, 33.8%, 34.9%, 46.2% and 47.3%, respectively and the prevalence rates of adult carotid atherosclerosis within control group were 18.18%(10/55), 30.77%(16/52), 20.00%(10/50),18.67% (14/75) and 21.31% ( 13/61 ), respectively; the standardize prevalence rates were 22.4%, 17.7%, 10.7%,24.6%, 18.9%, respectively. The standardize prevalence rates were higher in observation group [39.50%(113/285) ]than that in control group[39.50%(113/285), T = 26, P < 0.01 ]. The severity of adult carotid atherosclerosis (composition of 4 - 7 scores ) was compared between observation group [ 17.70%(20/113 )] and control group [ 14.06% (9/64) ], and the difference was insignificant(x2 = 0.26, P > 0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of carotid atherosclerosis in drinking-water type of endemic arsenicosis areas is higher than that of the control areas. The study provides evidence that arsenic poisoning can cause atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVETo analyze a large cohort of patients with rectal cancer within a cancer center to determine the prognostic factors by univariate and multivariate analyses.
METHODSA total of 952 patients with rectal cancer were treated surgically during a period of 10 years. R0, R1 and R2 operations were carried out in 741 patients (77.8%), 75 patients (7.9%) and 136 patients (14.3%), respectively. There were more Miles operation (53.5%) than lower abdominal resection (LAR, 33.7%).
RESULTSThe operation mortality was 0.3%, 418 patients were dead within 108 months postoperatively due to recurrence or metastases to liver, lung and bone in 53, 39 and 12 patients. The overall mean survival time for all patients was 73.52 +/- 1.70 months and the overall 3-, 5-and 10-year survival rates were 67.6%, 55.4% and 38.2%. The overall 3-, 5- and 10-year survival rates for patients treated by radical operation were 81.4%, 70.3%, 48.8%, respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimate showed that patient gender, age, radicality of resection, histological type, liver and pulmonary metastasis and TNM stage were the predictors of survival. Multivariate analysis showed statistically significant correlation with radicality of operation, histological type, depth of tumor invasion, lymphatic invasion, TNM stage, liver and pulmonary metastasis.
CONCLUSIONFor survival, statistically significant differences among prognostic factors in relation to radicality of resection, lymphatic invasion, TNM stage, depth of tumor invasion, histological type, liver and pulmonary metastasis are found.
