BACKGROUND:Various surface modification techniques have been utilized as an attempt to improve the osteointegration of Ti-based implants, which is a hotspot research concerning the artificial joint prosthesis. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of silicon doped zirconia film on the titanium surface on relevant factors of osteoblast-like MG63 cells. METHODS:Silicon doped zirconia and zirconia films were respectively prepared on the titanium surface by cathodic arc deposition. Osteoblast-like MG63 cells were cultured on silicon doped zirconia film, zirconia film and pure titanium, respectively. After 1, 4, 7, 10 days of incubation, samples were collected for assay. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) at mRNA and protein levels were detected using real-time PCR and ELISA, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1) At 1 day of inoculation, there was no significant difference in the OPG mRNA and protein expression among the three groups. At 4 days of inoculation, the expression of OPG mRNA and protein in the silicon doped zirconia film and zirconia film groups was significantly higher than that in the pure titanium group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the former two groups. At 7 and 10 days of inoculation, the expression of OPG mRNA and protein in the silicon doped zirconia film growp was highest among the three groups (P<0.05). (2) At 1 day of inoculation, there was no significant difference in the RANKL mRNA and protein expression among the three groups. At 4 and 7 days of inoculation, the expression of RANKL mRNA and protein in the silicon doped zirconia film group was significantly lower than that in the other two groups (P<0.05). At 10 days of inoculation, the expression of OPG mRNA and protein in the silicon doped zirconia film and zirconia film groups was significantly higher than that in the pure titanium group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the former two groups. To conclude, silicon doped zirconia film fabricated by cathodic arc deposition can enhance the expression of OPG and reduce the expression of RANKL at the same time.

This paper introduced an experimental study of polylacticacid (PLA) nanoparticles of lipophilic anti-cancer herb drug using a precipitation method. Cucurbitacins (Cu) and Curcuminoids (Cur) were selected to be model drugs. They had similar solubility but their incorporation effects were significantly different: the average drug entrapment ratio, the average drug loading and the average drug recovery were 38.53%, 2.21% and 27.02% respectively; while those of Cur-PLA-NP were 94.36%, 14.35% and 91.23% respectively. To analyse the reason, drug incorporation process was investigated. By measuring solvent evaporation rate, ratio of drug PLA precipitates, drug distribution in system and entrapping ratio at different time of preparation, we found the difference of precipitation velocity of drug was the main reason. We also concluded that not all lipophilic drug can be well entrapped into PLA nanoparticle by nanoprecipitation method. The drug incorporation depended on the interations among drug, PLA and organic solvents, in addition to the solubility of the drug.

The rice water weevil (RWW) Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an invasive insect pest of rice Oryza sativa L. in China. Little is known about the interactions of this weevil with indigenous herbivores. In the present study, adult feeding and population density of the weevil, injury level of striped stem borer Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and pink stem borer Sesamia inferens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to rice, as well as growth status of their host plants were surveyed in a rice field located in Southeastern Zhejiang, China, in 2004 with the objective to discover interspecific interactions on the rice. At tillering stage, both adult feeding of the weevil and injury of the stem borers tended to occur on larger tillers (bearing 5 leaves) compared with small tillers (bearing 2~4 leaves), but the insects showed no evident competition with each other. At booting stage, the stem borers caused more withering/dead hearts and the weevil reached a higher density on the plants which had more productive tillers and larger root system; the number of weevils per tiller correlated negatively with the percentage of withering/dead hearts of plants in a hill. These observations indicate that interspecific interactions exist between the rice water weevil and the rice stem borers with negative relations occurring at booting or earlier developmental stages of rice.

OBJECTIVETo understand the information of female patients with knee osteoarthritis regarding muscle force, constitution parameter.
METHODSThirty-seven cases diagnosed as knee osteoarthritis and 37 controls were examined by MES. T-test was used to analysis two groups differences of muscle force, constitution parameter, et al.
RESULTSCompared between affected limbs and controls limbs in patients revealed that the lower limb muscle distribution index of the affected limbs was higher than the control limbs (P<0.05), but comparison in functional status the lower limb muscle force, muscle functional index and muscle force of unit volume of the affected limbs were lower than the control limbs (P<0.05). Compared between patients group and control group the muscle force of both lower limbs, muscle functional index and muscle force of unit volume were lower than control group (P<0.001).
CONCLUSIONThe utility muscle force of lower limbs of female patients with knee osteoarthritis is weaker than healthy female. Muscle function disorder instead of muscle atrophy is the key cause of the weakness.

OBJECTIVETo explore the correlation of sperm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)-DNA adducts with semen quality and sperm apoptosis.
METHODSWe collected semen samples from 433 infertile Chinese men, detected sperm PAH-DNA adducts using immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry, and determined the rate of sperm apoptosis by TUNEL.
RESULTSMultiple linear regression analysis showed that the level of sperm PAH-DNA adducts was correlated negatively with sperm concentration (beta = -0.632), total sperm count (beta = -0.830) and sperm motility (beta = -9.647), but positively with the rate of sperm apoptosis (beta = 0.130).
CONCLUSIONSperm PAH-DNA adducts are evidently correlated with semen quality and sperm apoptosis, and play an important role in the evaluation of male productivity.
