In order to describe the epidemiological features and explore the risk factors of colon cancer, a population-based case-control study involving 476 cases of colon cancer and 857 controls matched by age and sex was carried out from Sep. 1988 to Aug. 1989. In this paper the risk factors related to colon cancer are reported as follows; The major risk factors of colon cancer in the area were generally in accordance with the prevalent hypothesis, colon cancer in Shanghai urban area may present the characteristics of low risk areas. Analysis of single and multiple factors of food intake frequency and quantity indicated that most vegetables usually cast a protective effect. Males in the highest quartile of intake of vegetables had a OR of 0.4 (P trend

Objective To detect the expression of EGF mRNA in renal parenchyma in congenital hydronephrosis in children and to evaluate the role of EGF in causing chronic renal damage. Methods The expression of EGF mRNA in renal parenchyma, renal pelvis and PUJ tissues from congenital hydronephrosis in children was studied by means of RT PCR. Results The expression of EGF in the aff ected renal parenchyma and PUJ tissues decreased. It also decreased in the affected pelvis but the difference was not significant. The decrease of EGF expression was the most obvious in the affected renal parenchyma. Conclusions EGF expression decreased in renal parenchyma in congenital hydronephrosis and the decrease might be related to the chronic renal damage and renal atrophy caused by hydronephrosis.

A population-based case-control study of the colorectal cancer was conducted in Shanghai (1988-1990). The contributions of diet and nutrients as risk factors of colon cancer were reported in a previously paper (1990). The study involved 575 incident cases of rectal cancer and 1400 controls at age range from 30-70.The study showed that increased consumption of cruciferous vegetables (Veg), fresh beans, fresh fruits, garlic, sea weeds and Veg oil were inversely related to the risk of rectal cancer. The intake of pork elevated the risk. Dietary fiber, vitamin C and carotene, independent of other nutrients, had the protective effect against developing rectal cancer. The intakes of several lipids, including total fat, saturated, mono-unsaturated, polyunsatura-ted,oleic, linoleic, and linolcnic, were slightly related with the risk of the cancer. Cholesterol significantly decreased the risk for females and had a significant linear trend. Investigation of nutrients revealed that ?-tocopherol and FOCC (fatty acid of odd carbon chain) decreased the relative risk for females. Analyses compared with other studies carried out in the Western countries (high incidence areas) showed that there may be a difference in risk factors of rectal cancer in diet between the Eastern countries (low incidence areas) and the West.

Objective To establish a drug-resistance cell line of human glioma with temozolomide ( TMZ) ,investigate its resistance mechanisms, and provide experimental evidence for optimal TMZ therapy. Methods A TMZ-resistant human glioma cell line,U251/TR,was established by stepwise exposure of human parental U251 cells to TMZ. Resistance index and cell viability were accessed by MTT assay. Western-Blot,RT-PCR,immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to detect MGMT expression for the analysis of resistance mechanism. Results A TMZ-resistant human glioma cell line,U251/TR,was developed after 8 months of stepwise induction with 0. 25-16. 00 μg·mL-1 TMZ. IC50 in U251/TR cells was approximately 7 times higher compared with that in U251 cells (P=0. 00 ). The MGMT expression was significantly increased in U251/TR cells compared with that in parental U251 cells (P=0. 00) . Conclusion A TMZ-resistant human glioma cell line,U251/TR,was established by stepwise exposure of human parental U251 cells to TMZ. The primary mechanism of TMZ resistance is associated with increased activity of MGMT.

1. The blood supply of the tensor fascia lata myocutaneous free flap comes chiefly from the ascending branch of the lateral circumflex artery (76.74%) or its ascending and the transverse branches (23.26%). In most cases the ascending branch may be served as the vascular pedicle of myocutaneous free flap in transplatation. In a few cases the transverse branch my be used instead of the ascending one.2. The projection of the origin of the lateral circumflx artery on the body surface is at a point averaging 96.5mm below, and 49.2mm medial to the anterior superior iliac spine. This point is the surface landmark of the lateral circumflex artery. 3. The branches of the lateral circumflex artery may be classified into four types. Type 1—32 cases, 74.42%; Type Ⅱ—3 cases, 6.98%; Type Ⅲ—7 cases, 16.28%; Type Ⅳ—1 cases, 2.33%.4. The tensor fascia lata is chiefly supplied by the ascending branch of the lateral circumflex artery, it divides into a short superior and a long inferior twigs. Both twigs enter the muscle and form abundant anastomoses in the subcutaneus tissues. In order to reduce the thick ness of the free flap for the use in plastics, the superior twig with its supplying muscle is cut away and the inferior one's left to supply myocutaneus flap.5. The angle between the ascending branch and the inner surface of the tensor fasca lata varies between 44? to 120?, with an average of 66.5?. The original angle must be kept in transplantation, which favours the survival of the myocutaneus free flap.
