3.Nursing Productivity of Tertiary General Hospitals using Financial Statements

PURPOSE: This study was performed to analyze financial ratios and nursing productivity and to interpret comparisons of financial standard ratios. METHODS: The financial statements of 21 tertiary general hospitals were collected from the webpage of the National Tax Service in Korea. General characteristics of the hospitals were acquired from their webpages. RESULTS: The results obtained were compared with the financial standard ratios of Korean hospitals. The majority of hospitals showed poor liquidity, performance, turnover, and growth. Nursing productivity was measured by calculating annual value added per nurse (₩ 39,746,938) and annual gross revenues per nurses (₩ 65,803,550). CONCLUSION: Interestingly, although the financial ratios were generally poor, nursing productivities were very good. Nurse managers can suggest increasing nursing staff levels based on high nursing productivity despite poor financial conditions.

5.Financial Ratio Analysis for Developing Nursing Management Strategies in University Hospitals.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analysis the financial statements of university hospitals and to apply the results to build nursing management strategies. METHODS: Data on the financial statements of university hospitals were collected each hospital's homepage or internet search from February to June, 2010. Financial statements of 11 hospitals were analyzed using the 4 categories of financial ratio analysis method: liquidity, performant, growth and turnover. RESULTS: Overall results showed that the financial status the university hospitals were unstable, and many financial indicators did not meet financial standard ratios. Only 8 financial indicators of total 19 indicators satisfied financial standard ratios. CONCLUSION: The results of financial statements analysis suggest that nurse managers should develop the blue ocean strategy for diversification of nursing services to improve financial ratios of liquidity, performance, and growth. Using a unit-based just-in-time system for effective supply management would help to increase profits and to decrease costs of hospital by improving financial ratios of turnover.

6.Nurses' Educational Needs Assessment for Financial Management Education Using the Nominal Group Technique.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the financial management educational needs of nurses in order to development an educational program to strengthen their financial management competencies. METHODS: Data were collected from two focus groups using the nominal group technique. The study consisted of three steps: a literature review, focus group discussion using the nominal group technique, and data synthesis. RESULTS: After analyzing the results, nine key components were selected: corporate management and accounting, introduction to financial management in hospitals, basic structure of accounting, basics of hospital accounting, basics of financial statements, understanding the accounts of financial statements, advanced analysis of financial statements, application of financial management, and capital financing of hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings can be used to develop a financial management education program to strengthen the financial management competencies of nurse.

Purpose:
This study examined the effects of changes in the intensity of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) on CorticoMuscular Coherence (CMC) during action observation. This paper presents a neurophysiological basis for the effective intensity of FES.
Methods:
Twenty-seven healthy volunteers were asked to observed a video with FES. The FES was provided with a sensory stimulation level, nerve stimulation level, and motor stimulation level. Simultaneously, an electroencephalogram (EEG) of the sensorimotor cortex and electromyogram (EMG) from the wrist extensor muscle were recorded. The peak CMC and average CMC were analyzed to compare the differences caused by the FES intensity.
Results:
The peak CMC showed a significant increase in the alpha band during motor stimulation (p<0.05). The average CMC showed a significant increase in the beta band during motor stimulation (p<0.05).
Conclusion
The intensity of FES, which causes actual movement, increased the CMC during action observation. These results show that the intensity of the FES can affect the functional connection between the sensorimotor cortex and muscle.

9.Effects of Peripheral Neuropathy on CTB-labeled Motor Neurons Following Ligation of the Tibial Nerve.

Changes in CTB labeled motor neurons of the spinal cord were observed after the induction of peripheral neuropathy by ligation of the tibial nerve. Rats were anesthetized and the tibial nerve was ligated with 3-0 silk. The rats were separated into three groups based on the length of time the tibial nerve was ligated (1, 2, or 4 weeks). After the ligation procedures were complete, the tibial nerve stumps were soaked in CTB solution. Tibial nerve segments and the spinal cord were then observed. In the control and experimental groups, CTB-labeled neurons formed a discrete population that was concentrated primarily at the L5 level, while the contributions from L4 and L6 were minor. According to the distributions, CTB-labeled neurons were divided into rostral and caudal groups. A selective decrease of CTB-labeled neurons was observed only in the caudal group, extending from the rostral L5 to one-half of the rostral L6. The total numbers of CTB-labeled motor neurons were 2,160+/-169.3, 1,002+/-245.1, 587.5+/-346.5, and 1,728+/-402.6 in the control group, 1 week group, 2 week group, and 4 week group, respectively. The selective decrease of CTB-labeled neurons in the caudal division was responsible for the decrease in the total number of labeled neurons in all groups. Following peripheral neuropathy caused by ligation of the tibial nerve, CTB-labeled neurons in the spinal cord decreased selectively. These results may provide important neuroanatomical data regarding the effects of peripheral neuropathy by ligation of the tibial nerve.

10.Comparative Analysis of Cervical Arthroplasty Using Mobi-C(R) and Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Husion Using the Solis(R) -Cage.

OBJECTIVE: Although anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the standard treatment for degenerative cervical disc disease, concerns regarding adjacent level degeneration and loss of motion have suggested that arthroplasty may be a better alternative. We have compared clinical and radiological results in patients with cervical disc herniations treated with arthroplasty and ACDF. METHODS: We evaluated 53 patients treated for cervical disc herniations with radiculopathy, 21 of whom underwent arthroplasty and 32 of whom underwent ACDF. Clinical results included the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score for upper extremity radiculopathy, neck disability index (NDI), duration of hospital stay and convalescence time. All patients were assessed radiologically by measuring cervical lordosis, segmental lordosis and segmental range-of-movement (ROM) of operated and adjacent disc levels. RESULTS: Mean hospital stay (5.62 vs. 6.26 days, p<0.05) and interval between surgery and return to work (1.10 vs. 2.92 weeks, p<0.05) were significantly shorter in the arthroplasty than in the fusion group. Mean NDI and extremity VAS score improved after 12 months in both groups. Although it was not significant, segmental ROM of adjacent levels was higher in the fusion group than in the arthroplasty group. And, segmental motion of operated levels in arthroplasty group maintained more than preoperative value at last follow up. CONCLUSION: Although clinical results were similar in the two groups, postoperative recovery was significantly shorter in the arthroplasty group. Although it was not significant, ROM of adjacent segments was less in the arthroplasty group. Motion of operated levels in arthroplasty group was preserved at last follow up.
