The effects of magnolol (Mag) on hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia, hepatic oxidative stress and cytochrome P4502E1 (CYP2E1) activity of diabetic rats induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) were studied. After oral administration of Mag (25, 50 and 100 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1)) for continuous 10 weeks, the blood glucose and lipids (TC, TG and LDL-C) levels, as well as the hepatic CYP2E1 activity and MDA content of diabetic rats, decreased significantly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), whereas the oral glucose tolerance and hepatic antioxidant enzymatic activities (CAT and GSH-Px) of diabetic rats, increased significantly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). The results indicated that Mag was effective against the hepatic oxidative damage, hyperglycemia and hyperlipemia of diabetic rats induced by HFD and STZ, and the inhibition of Mag on hepatic CYP2E1 activity could be an important mechanism of Mag against hepatic insulin resistance and oxidative damage.

Objective: To investigate the protective effect of shenduqing Granules on chronic renal insufficiency in rats. Methods: The rat model of chronic renal insufficiency was made by feeding 0.75% adenine forage. The blood biochemical indexes, ion concentration in serum of rat was measured and the pathological changes of rat kidney were observed. Results: Shenduqing Granules obviously increased thymus index (TI). The weight of rat kidney in the treatment group was lighter than that of the model group. The kidney histomorphological study showed that Shenduqing Granules obvionsly reduce the pathological changes. The drug crystals were also reduced. Conclusion: Shenduqing Granules has the potential protection against chronic renal insufficiency in rats.

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical efficacy of the fixation of elderly fracture of proximal humerus with locking compression plate(LCP) by mini-incision approach from lateral shoulder.Methods31 elderly patients suffered from elderly fracture of proximal humerus were treated with locking compression plate(LCP) by mini-incision approach from lateral shoulder, male 13 cases, female 18 cases; aged from 56 to 72, average 62-8 years old; fractures according to Neer classification: type Ⅱ(8 cases), type Ⅲ (19 cases), type Ⅳ (4 cases). Cause of injuries: traffic accident (9 cases), falling (20 cases), other injuries(2 cases).ResultsThe patients were followed up 6 to 36 months, an average of about 24 months. Fracture healing time was 2-2 ~ 6-4 months, on average 3-7 months; No wound infection occurred. Post-operative functional score (Neer score) revealed: excellent(18 cases), good (11 cases), fair (2 cases), the ratio of excellent(18 cases), good (11 cases) was 93-5%. ConclusionFixation of elderly fracture of proximal humerus with locking compression plate(LCP) by minimally invasive approach from lateral shoulder is a safe, reliable and minimally invasive procedure with good reduction and stable fixation. Early post-operative functional exercise may be permitted for preventing shoulder joint adhesion.

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of mitochondrial motility-related gene mirol and mitochondrial energy metabolism during an acute bout of prolonged exercise. Methods CS7 BL/6 mice underwent a moderate intensity treadmill running with the slope of 0° and at the speed of 13m/min, and they were randomly divided into 5 groups:resting group(R),exercise groups running for 30min(E30),60min(E60),90min (E90) and 120min(E120),respectively. Respiratory control index and ATP synthesis activity in isolated mitochondria were detected. Skeletal muscle H_2O_2 concentration, mirol mRNA expressions were also measured. Results (1)mirol mRNA contents were significantly increased in groups E30 to E120,as compared with the group R;and mirol mRNA expression increased 32.8%, 107.6%,63.8% and 44.8% respectively in groups E30 to E120. (2)H_2O_2 contents of skeletal muscle were clearly increased in group s E30 to E120. (3)ATP synthesis activity elevated at 30 min of exercise and returned to the baseline thereafter, whereas respiratory control index without remarkable change in groups E30 to E120. Conclusion Muscular mirol mRNA expression significantly increased during 120min of exercise as compared with the resting status and thus facilitated the mitochondrial respiratory and ATP synthesis for matching the energy demand during exercise.
