2.Photocatalytic antifungal activity against candida albicans by TiO2 coated acrylic resin denture base.

Statement of problem. Proliferation of Candida albicans is primarily within the plaque on the fitting surface of the denture rather than on the inflamed mucosa. Consequently, the treatment of the denture is equally important as treatment of the tissue. Cleansing and disinfection should be efficiently carried-out as the organisms can penetrate into the voids of the acrylic resin and grow in them, from which they can continue to infect and reinfect bearing tissues. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of photocatalytic reaction to eliminate Candida albicans from acrylic resin denture base, and to investigate the antifungal effect with various UVA illumination time. Materials and Methods. The specimens were cured by the conventional method following the manufacturer's instruction using thermal polymerized denture base resin (Vertex RS; Dentimex, Netherlands). TiO2 photocatalyst sol(LT), which is able to be coated at normal temperature, was made from the Ti-alkoxide progenitor. The XRD patterns, TEM images and nitrogen absorption ability of the TiO2 photocatalyst sol(LT) were compared with the commercial TiO2 photocatalyst P-25. The experimental specimens were coated with the mixture of the TiO2 photocatalyst sol(LT) and binder material (silane) using dip-coater, and uncoated resin plates were used as the control group. Crystallinity of TiO2 of the specimen was tested by the XRD. Size, shape and chemical compositions were also analyzed using the FE-SEM/EDS. The angle and methylene blue degradation efficiency were measured for evaluating the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 film. Finally, the antifungal activity of the specimen was tested. Candida albicans KCTC 7629(1 ml, initial concentration 105cells/ml) were applied to the experiment and control group specimens and subsequently two UVA light source with 10W, 353 nm peak emission were illuminated to the specimens from 15cm above. The extracted 2 microliter of sample was plated on nutrient agar plate (BactoTM Brain Heart Infusion; BD, USA) with 10 minute intervals for 120 minute, respectively. It was incubated for 24 hours at 37 degree C and the colony forming units (CFUs) were then counted. Results. Compared the characteristics of LT photocatalyst with commercial P-25 photocatalyst, LT were shown higher activity than P-25. The LT coated experimental specimen surface had anatase crystal form, less than 20 nm of particle size and wide specific surface area. To evaluate the photocatalytic activity of specimens, methylene blue degradation reaction were used and about 5% of degradation rate were measured after 2 hours. The average contact angle was less than 20.indicating that the LT photocatalyst had hydrophilicity. In the antifungal activity test for Candida albicans, 0% survival rate were measured within 30 minute after irradiation of UVA light. Conclusion. From the results reported above, it is concluded that the UVA-LT photocatalytic reaction have an antifungal effect on the denture surface Candida albicans, and so that could be applicable to the clinical use as a cleaning method.

Especially, amyloid beta and tau protein coupling and neuroinflammatory and neurovascular contributions to Alzheimer disease are quite mysterious. Many animal models and basic biological research are trying to solve these puzzles. Known as aging processes, autophagy, mitochondrial degeneration with generation of reactive oxygen species, and age-related epigenetic modifications are also known to be associated with development of Alzheimer’s disease. Environmental factors such as bacterial and viral infections, heavy metal ions, diet, sleep, stress, and gut microbiota are also risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease. Future development of preventive and therapeutic modalities may be dependent on the pathobiology of Alzheimer’s disease.

7.MR Imaging of Primary Cardiac and Pericardiac Tumors.

PURPOSE: To evaluate characteristic MR findings of primary cardiac and pericardiac tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were myxomas (n=7), malignant lymphoma (n=l), lipoma (n=l), and pericardiac mesotheliomas (n=2). We analyzed location, size, shape, signal intensity, contrast enhancement, and associated findings of adjacent structures such as pericardiac and pleural effusion, and mediastinal lymph node enlargement. RESULTS: Locations of the myxomas were left atrium in four cases, left ventricle in one, right atrium in one, and right ventricle in one. Mean diameter was 3.5cm (range, 2-7cm). They were polypoid or Iobulated in shape, and attached to interatrial or interventricular septurn in all cases except in right atrial myxoma which was attached to lateral wall. Their peduncles were demonstrated in three left atrial myxomas. The signal intensities were iso or slightly high on T1-weighted images and high on T2-weighted images. Pleural and pericardial effusions were shown in the three cases. Malignant lymphoma was manifested as large mass in right ventricle infiltrating to right atrium, interventricular septum, right paratracheal and retrocardiac area. It had slightly high intensity in both T1- and T2-weighted images with a strong contrast enhancement and associated with both pericardiac and pleural effusion. Lipoma was polypoid in shape and attached to lateral wall of left ventricle with bright T1 and high T2 signal intensity. Pericardiac mesothelioma was manifested as a pericardiac and atrial mass with diffuse irregular uneven thickening of pericardium which had iso signal on T1- and high T2-weighted images with moderate contrast enhancement. Conculsion: MR imaging is a very useful method in demonstration of the location, extent, tissue characteristics of the mass, and relationship with its adjacent structu res in evaluation of cardiac and pericardiac tumors.

8.Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Involving Multiple Semicircular Canals

Even though benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) mostly affects a single semicircular canal (SCC), BPPV simultaneously involving more than one SCC is not rare. This multi-canal BPPV may either involve the same canals on both sides or simultaneously affect different canals on the same or on both sides. Since the SCCs can be involved in various combinations in one or both ears, multi-canal BPPVs pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The different patterns of nystagmus induced during each positional maneuver should be differentiated from positional vertigo and nystagmus due to central lesions. It remains unknown which canal should be treated first and which maneuver should be adopted for multi-canal BPPVs. Furthermore, the optimal interval from treatment of a canal to another should be determined. The response to canalith repositioning maneuvers and recurrences do not differ between multi- and single canal BPPVs in spite of more frequent involvement of multiple canals in traumatic cases.

9.The Usefulness of MRCP in the Evaluation of Pancreaticobiliary Diseases in Children.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP) is a noninvasive method for imaging the pancreaticobiliary tree. The aim of this study was to evalute the usefulness of MRCP for the diagnosis of pancreaticobiliary diseases in children. METHODS: From October 1996 to May 2001, 67 patients with obstructive jaundice and three patients with chronic recurrent pancreatitis were evaluated with abdominal ultrasonography and MRCP. The final diagnosis was based on the operative and pathologic findings with biopsy specimen including clinical and laboratory findings. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients, consisting of 31 males and 39 females, with a mean age of 2.6+/-3.3 years were studied. The final diagnosis was biliary atresia in 25, neonatal cholestasis in 18, choledochal cyst without anomalous pancreatobiliary duct union(APBDU) in nine, choledochal cyst with APBDU in seven, cholestatic hepatitis in five, chronic recurrent pancreatitis in three, sclerosing cholangitis in two, and secondary biliary cirrhosis in one case. The overall diagnostic accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography was 75.7% and that of MRCP was 97.1%. The sensitivity and specificity of MRCP were 100% and 98% for biliary atresia, 87.5% and 100% for choledochal cyst with APBDU, 100% and 100% for choledochal cyst without APBDU, sclerosing cholangitis and chronic recurrent pancreatitis, respectively. CONCLUSION: MRCP is a fast, non-invasive and reliable method for diagnosing pancreaticobiliary diseases in children and will be the standard diagnostic procedure in the future.

10.The Diagnostic Usefulness of Endoscopic Findings and Detection Rates of CLO and HpKit Test for Helicobacter pylori Infection in Children.

PURPOSE: We performed this study to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of endoscopic finding of nodular gastritis, CLO and HpKit test for H. pylori infection in children. METHODS: Gastroduodenal endoscopy and mucosal biopsy were performed on 212 children who visited our hospital between Jul. 1999 and May 2000 due to abdominal pain. We performed CLO and HpKit test for H. pylori with the time interval of 15, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 hours. Histological examination of H. pylori was made by H-E or Alcian yellow stain with biopsy specimens. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive and negative predictive value of nodular gastritis, CLO and HpKit test were calculated from the analysis of above data. RESULTS: Sensitivity and specificity of 3 hour-CLO test was 68.4% and 100% respectively. Sensitivity and specificity of 3 hour-HpKit test was 65.8% and 100% respectively. No significant difference in sensitivity and specificity was found between in 3 hour-CLO and HpKit test(P>0.05). Sensitivity of CLO test increased as time lapsed, but corresponding specificity did not decrease as time lapsed(sensitivity and specificity at 144 hours : 89.5% and 94.8% respectively). However, sensitivity of HpKit test increased as time lapsed, but specificity markedly decreased. Sensitivity and specificity of the nodular gastritis was 78.9% and 93.7% respectively. CONCLUSION: Both CLO and HpKit test have relatively low sensitivity and specificity for the detection of H. pylori in 3 hours of testing in children. The endoscopic finding of nodular gastritis is another good standard in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in children.
